What do you miss most?
MichiganChic replied to Roserie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nothing. -
Yes, and it's surprising. Lots of things don't taste good anymore. It's a little funny, because I am (or was) a great cook, if I do say so myself . People love to come to my house for parties because the food is always great and there's a ton of it. (I know everyone will be suprised by that). I noticed that when my thin friends had parties, they didn't have much or very good food...and of course, the "thick" friends thought so too. So now, I am starting to think I won't know what's good anymore, lol!! Not that I care...food has lost it's hold on me, and I don't care if people wonder why I forgot how to cook.

All of my December sleevers...
MichiganChic replied to blkdiamond377's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was on a two week stall, and it is maddening! You just have to wonder how you can eat so little and not lose. And then you remember, that you can't eat so little and not lose, you just have to give it time. I just think your body needs to readjust, or catch up, or redistribute, or it's trying to stabilize when that happens. It was my first stall since surgery, and it was a weight my body ALWAYS plateaued at before. The scale did move finally yesterday and today, and I'm hoping it continues. For me, it's the difference between pre surgery and post - before I would have just quit. Now I have too much time and effort invested....and my sleeve won't really let me quit anyway. Hang in there, and look at some of the vets threads on this for inspiration -
My First Post (due to feeling very frustrated right now)
MichiganChic replied to timetogetreal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry about all the hoop jumping! But there is no way I'd take a medication I didn't think I needed! I would get a second opinion, and not tell the second opinion anything about the first. If the second opinion arrives at the same conclusion, then that's another thing. I think it's an OPINION, and as we know, opinions can be wrong, even in trained professionals with good intentions. When I had my psyche eval, the guy was pretty good. He just wanted to know about support post op, my motives for surgery, and to identify any red flags of mental issues that might prevent success. He also reviewed all the potential emotional issues people might have, and said that if anything like that comes up, this one visit is to help people know to seek help. -
How to handle critics?
MichiganChic replied to sroan05's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
For me, it's a private decision, and I only told a handful of people I thought would be supportive. They all have been, so I haven't run into any negativity. -
What has been your worst calorie day?
MichiganChic replied to NJSleeveboy's topic in Food and Nutrition
Haha, glad you enjoyed that! I LOVE being able to eat a small amount and be fully satisfied with it. I haven't tried a hamburger yet, but I just might -
What has been your worst calorie day?
MichiganChic replied to NJSleeveboy's topic in Food and Nutrition
Yes, that was my worst day. I am usually between 600-800 calories. My typical is probably about 700. If I get below 550, I start feeling bad. -
What has been your worst calorie day?
MichiganChic replied to NJSleeveboy's topic in Food and Nutrition
I have no issue with bread or sweets, either. And they are both like crack to me! -
What has been your worst calorie day?
MichiganChic replied to NJSleeveboy's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm 8 weeks out, and my worst day was 875, just this past week. I'm supposed to be between 400-800 calories. My nut said 800-1000 calories at about 6 months. -
Constipated... What else can I do? TMI
MichiganChic replied to mikeross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hahahaaaa! Not pleasant, but sometimes its got to be done. And also, it's going to be a nurse who disimpacts you -
I am not allowed pasta for 4 months, so I wouldn't have eaten it.
-
So happy to hear you are healing and progressing! You sound like you are doing SO much better, and I am happy for you!

I can take some pretty big gulps, probably at least 4-5 ounces at a time.

Getting your teeth cleaned?
MichiganChic replied to MLCT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had mine cleaned about 2 weeks out, no problem. -
self payer concerned about complications
MichiganChic replied to BKLYNgal87's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Regarding the insurance - Call your insurance company and ask them that question, because they already know the answer. You have some type of contract that spells out what is covered. And then get it in writing from them. Good luck! -
Average calorie intake
MichiganChic replied to Huntingnurse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 8 weeks out, and average 700-800 calories daily. I feel OK at this many calories, but not great. I was thinking about increasing a little, but I would have to eat more often or higher calorie food to do it, and havent gotten around to it. Haha, that's so funny -before surgery eating more was all I could get around to! -
In my experience, if one person knows, more are going to, lol! I have had to deal with the word getting out, and it is a tangled web. I just don't want to be the topic of conversation, but it seems no matter which way you go, you will be (or at least me, with the people I know ) I didn't think it through much before the surgery, or I might have told no one. Since you can't unring the bell, guess I'll just go with it. *sigh*

All of my December sleevers...
MichiganChic replied to blkdiamond377's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Haha, love this! I might get blasted for this, but guess what? I made up my mind long before I had this surgery I am NEVER eating any low fat mayo or cheese, of any kind. I do limit the amount I have, and watch my calories, but I can eat so little, I'm never going to eat something I don't like! As for the carbs - I think I need them. I have been eating between 15-30 (mostly near 30) most days, and yesterday I just couldn't feel satisfied. I wasn't hungry, just not satisfied. I had a small amount of potatoes, and felt so much better last night and today. My plan does not restrict carbs, just have to follow the rules of protein first, 65-75 gm daily, then produce, no bread/rice/pasta till 4 months, and calories 400-800. I think you said it - we each have to find our own way. We knew this was not a magic bullet, and this is part of the work we have to do. -
All of my December sleevers...
MichiganChic replied to blkdiamond377's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow, I'd go crazy on 300 calories a day! I'm supposed to have between 400-800 a day, but I've been averaging 600-800 lately. I'm finding the swelling is going down, things are starting to feel normal, and I'm actually a little hungry, or empty sometimes. Yesterday for the first time, I just felt so.....unsatisfied. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but even though I had eaten a snack and was not hungry, I just felt like I needed something. So, for dinner had a little higher fat and some carbs, and felt great after that. What a great feeling to be able to eat just a little, keep within my calories/protein requirements, and not lose control! I'm still learning this, but I'm starting to really like this sleeve! -
sudden symptoms: diarrhea/nausea - please help
MichiganChic replied to katikati's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had loose stools for more than 4 weeks post op. I was surprised by that a little, especially that it lasted so long. Now, I've gone the other direction, and it's more unpleasant, lol! I was thinking I might be lactose intolerant, or that this was going to be permanent, but it wasn't. Hang in there! As for the nausea - probably so also normal. If meds don't work, call the doc. Staying hydrated is key. Keep sipping those liquids. The first few weeks are certainly the hardest, and some days are better than others, but it does get better. Good luck -
When r u fully healed from surgery?
MichiganChic replied to blessings's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mostly healed 6-8 weeks, and microscopically healed is 2 years (according to my doc). I'm about 8 weeks, and feeling pretty normal for the most part. -
Extreme fatigue-is it my age?
MichiganChic replied to DebLW's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was super fatigued, too. Some days, I would have to rest after just taking a shower! I am 50, so maybe it was that. I also had a post op infection, so maybe it was that. I also was eating about 400 calories a day, so maybe it was that. I just don't know, but I think it was a combination of the above. It did get significantly better right about 4 weeks, though, so take heart, it does get better! Now that I think about it, that was about when I was able to advance my diet a little. Anyway, I'm almost 8 weeks out now, and I'm feeling pretty good. -
Diet or Not to diet
MichiganChic replied to newgrandmother's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well said, and I agree. I always think of cake/cookies as "crack" to me. It's always been my downfall, and has gotten me off track even after a year or more of good control...it sends me into a downward spiral. Sadly, I'm sure that's not changed! -
Should You Eat High-Protein Products?
MichiganChic replied to delta_girl's topic in Food and Nutrition
Haha, I think you hit the nail on the head - we are a bit like guinea pigs! I also think the reason we have different plans is because we have different physicians. To some extent there may be some customization for certain patients, but I think if you ask 20 docs opinions, you'll get 20 answers. For the most part, the centers of excellence have to meet some specific criteria that are established best practice, but beyond that, it's opinion. And you can usually find a study to back up the opinion. -
Hey Fiddleman, my B12 levels are high like that, too (>1700). Good news is B12 is Water soluable, so no, it's most likely not harmful, it's just expensive urine. I cut my B12 down to 3x weekly because I also have some neuropathy issues for unknown reasons prior to surgery, and don't want to chance it getting low. Truth is, I probably don't need it at all.
