    Sleep Apnea

Thanks, I'm giving it another week before I decide. Last night wasn't too bad, woke up at 3am but instead of flicking it off, I readjusted it and fell back asleep. We'll see...
  3. Walking is the best thing you can do to prevent blood clots. Do not cross your legs when sitting. If you have a long flight, get up every hour and walk. The same with a long car ride. You can buy the TED stockings at any medical supply store, but walking is still the best prevention! I also know someone who died of a clot that went to her lungs (pulmonary embolism). She had lots of post op pain and spent most of her time on the couch or in bed. Very sad but we need to be aware to do everything for prevention!
  4. My husband supports me but says "When you get skinny you're gonna be a pain the a** and monitor everything that I eat". He is about 100lb overweight and has no desire to change...sigh...

    Sleep Apnea

I recently was diagnosed with sleep apnea and I have been trying to use the machine for the past week. I have the small mask with the nasal pillows and I am struggling so much with it. I feel like I can't find the right fit in my nostrils and either it leaks too much sir or its so tight my nostrils hurt or I feel like I'm suffocating. Does anybody else use the nasal pillows? Maybe I should switch to the mask.

    My marriage sucks

People will act anyway we allow them to act. My husband works at a job he hates, but he knows that he can't leave until he finds another job, something he has been trying to do for two years now. I also had to put my foot down as I know he would have quit 2 years ago if I didn't issue the ultimatum. Sometimes men need to be reminded that Grown ups have responsibilities and need to put their family before their own needs!

    Pulimonary consult

For me, they did a pulmonary function test, which is just this machine you breath in and out of, lots of forceful exhales. They also set an appointment for a sleep apnea exam which I needed because I had no other co-morbidities like high Blood Pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol.

    For My April Sleevers

I'm not telling anyone so hopefully they don't know what the group name means! LOL!

    Any April sleevers?

Cheryl, I have TONS if fears, but the alternative is to stay big and miserable. That's not an option anymore! I try to focus the good things that will come, and not be paralyzed by fear that my children will grow up without me!

    Work work work

Same with me, lucky 8. My surgery is s he filed on a Friday and I'm planning on taking one week PTO so it will be a total of 10 days. My doc said that should be fine, even though I'm a nurse. I work in the recovery room so the most I do is push stretchers and I'll just make sure I don't push them alone!
  15. 152 pounds! Wow, that's great! I have every faith in you that you can lose that last 40!

Not fat enough? This is for Low BMI'ers

Yes, OMG! I'm 5'10, 250 lbs, BMI around 36. I'm lucky that I don't have BP or cholesterol problems, but my sleep study did show sleep apnea (which will help with insurance coverage!) I stopped talking about the surgery because whenever I mentioned it my co-workers would tell me "Stop that crazy talk" "You're not big enough" blah, blah, blah. Even my PCP, who I have known for over 25 years, said "You only have about 70 pounds to lose...just don't eat bread" Really? Just don't eat bread? Is that all? LOL, but he also said he would support me in whatever I chose to do so he gave me my medical clearance. I have only told my husband and children because I need to surround myself with people that support me. Let my co-workers think what they want.. it's no their business, it's mine!

    Confused and Panicking

If you don't take enough calories in, your body will go in starvation mode and you won't lose anything. Try the protein shakes and water (64 oz daily) and see what happens!

    More pre-op exams

It's been a very eventful few weeks. I went for my GI consult and had my endoscopy. He also scheduled me for a colonoscopy since my hemoglobin levels have been low. The endoscopy went well. It was the first time I had IV sedation...very strange feeling. I was surprised to learn I had gastric erosions. I guess it's good I gave up coffee for a while. Looks like I might have to stay off coffee for good! I have an appointment next week to see if the biopsies they took show anything. The colonoscopy went fine, another first for me. I also had my sleep study done. I was actually a little relieved when the tech came in at 1:30am to wake me up and put a bi-pap mask on me. The official report isn't ready yet but she did say she saw sleep apnea and I need that co-morbidity for insurance clearance. I saw my primary medical doctor, who I have know for over 25 years. I have been his official patient for about 7 years. When I told him abut my plans for gastric sleeve surgery he said to me "all you need to lose is 70lbs. Just don't eat bread. That's all you need to do"....really? If only it was that easy! But he also said that he will support me in whatever I choose to do, so he filled out the letter of medical necessity and scheduled me for a stress test and echocardiogram for my cardiac clearance. I saw my surgeon for the 2nd pre-op visit and he said with a BMI of 37 and sleep apnea, he is fully convinced he will have no problem with NJ Direct covering the surgery. April 12th is the big day!
  22. I saw my surgeon today, already had Endoscopy, sleep study, medical clearance, NUT and psych. My BMI is 37 and sleep study shows sleep apnea. He is fully convinced he will have no problem with my insurance clearance so the only thing I need is cardiac clearance and I'm all set for 4/12/13. Very exciting!
