Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?
deedadumble replied to *Dean*'s topic in Fitness & Exercise
I need a push and shove to get me back on the wagon. I have all the excuses in the world (work and home have been crazy!). Leaving on Thursday for another trip to California (LA this time), so I should be able to manage 2 runs before I leave. -
Woohoo!! Doing the Overweight NSV happy dance for you! That was my favorite goal so far! I'll set off one of my fireworks in your honor tonight.

I just started on Gabapentin last week and gradually increased to 300mg. I'm have a weird sensation that's hard to describe and I'm wondering if it could be from the Gabapentin. It's a feeling like you get when you go over a hill really fast and your stomach kinda drops only this is happening in my brain. It's feels like I am almost fainting, but it lasts a half a second and then it's over. This feeling hits me about once every minute or two and it's making it really hard to concentrate on my work. I was wondering if anyone else had this feeling? I'm going to call my rheumy about it tomorrow to see about lowering the dosage to see if it will help. I also just finished tapering off of Cymbalta, so it may be lingering withdrawal.

I hope you don't do that, but that is my selfishness talking I think you add thoughtfulness and a bit of light heartedness to the threads that you are on. That being said, I think that taking a break and concentrating on your own health and wellness would be good for you. You have to be a bit selfish in this journey. You need to do what you need to in order to protect and nurture your health goals. If participating in the forum as much as you may like is counterproductive to those goals then taking a break or cutting back is best for you. I think there are some lessons to be learned in this whole fiasco. I think the OP's intentions were good for the original post. She wanted to warn people to be careful, but she didn't necessarily want to ruin someone's reputation. She felt somewhat guilty about the situation, but also felt conflicted knowing how unprofessional and unethical the behavior was. I think it may have helped if she PMed a moderator and had them review what she was going to post. It was something that needed to be said, but could have been done in a better way. The second lesson is one of online safety. I see so many people posting so much personal information on here. People must be aware that it may not be just other people that have had VGS reading posts on here. Most have very good intentions, but a rare few may not and including so much identifying information isn't a good idea.

TED Talk - Insulin Resistance and Obesity
deedadumble replied to deedadumble's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was crying too! I know that I got to be obese by eating too much and not being active enough, but there are so many of us on this site that have issues with hormones, whether its thyroid, insulin, or estrogen. I've always been made to feel at the doctor that I have to solve my obesity problem before they would consider figuring out what else is wrong. I had this surgery to take away the blame placed on me by many doctors that I was the cause of my health issues. I was so tired of feeling like a second class citizen when I went to the doctor. I am hopeful that more research in this area will figure out what is causing an epidemic of metabolic disorders. -

Nickel allergy and surgical staples
deedadumble replied to mythreechildren2001's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have major metal allergies, including nickel and gold. I even had to have a crown on my tooth replaced because I was having reactions to the metal that was under the porcelain. I was extremely concerned before I had my surgery so I bought a pair of surgical grade titanium earrings (I've had pierced ears for years but never wear earrings because of the allergy). I wore them 24/7 and had no issues, so it made me more comfortable with the decision. -
I take a break from the site for a few days and all hell breaks loose! I would be extremely concerned if I owned this site that there is a doctor trolling and looking for his next victim by going through profiles, photos, and posts. In this situation, he probably already knew that the OP was traveling alone, what she looked like, and that she was a bit insecure in her looks. Make no mistake, even if it is consensual, this is unethical and reprehensible behavior. The doctors in Mexico need to change their procedures to ensure that doctors don't visit patient's hotel rooms alone. My doc came to my room with his female coordinator. I would probably have not thought to question it before reading about this situation. If I were going there now, I would pose the question before deciding on a doctor.

Mine goes from jog 10 walk 1 jog 8 on w6d2 to jog 20 on w6d3. I guess they figure you jogged a total of 18, so 20 shouldn't be that much more difficult. W6d3 is pretty rough, but once I got through it mentally I was ready to keep going and adding minutes. -

Have a great trip! We just got back from Tahoe. No running, but did several strenuous hikes. -
I have 3 containers of Unjury (chocolate splendor, unflavored, and chicken soup), plus sample packets from Unjury, Pantry Selections, and Nectar. I've used about 2-3 scoops of the unflavored and chicken soup, but the rest is unopened. 30 dollars for all includes shipping.

The utter, indescribable relief of not having to decide what diet am I going to try (and fail at) next has made this the best decision I have ever made. I am 5 months out and so at peace with my decision to have this surgery. I hope that you can get over the feeling that the choice is something to be considered as "failure". 95 percent of all dieters end up regaining the weight they lost (and usually gain more). Just like someone with a disease would choose to get treatment to cure that disease, you are choosing a smart treatment to hopefully cure you of the disease of obesity. My choice pre surgery was to not discuss it with people that lacked even the most basic information about the procedure. They had no information to add to the discussion, so why discuss it? I second the recommendation of writing out the pros and cons. This will help you decide if your making the right decision for you.

I run every other day or every third day. Some weeks only 2 times a week. Sometimes I backtrack and go back to a previous week. It's all about listening to what your body needs. The best recommendation that I have is if you are struggling to complete a day, slow your pace down! For example, if you're running at a 4.8, try 4.6 or even 4.4. My pace was a 4.0 when I started! People would pass me walking! Don't be afraid to go slower especially when you're just starting out. I wouldn't even worry about how fast you're going until you've been running 6 months at least. Also, if your legs or knees are hurting, shorten your stride. -
From here on out, you are not allowed to call yourself a fat person (or a skinny fat person). I've seen you in person and you are NOT fat!

It was wonderful meeting Laura and her son in person too! She's the same in person as she is on here.... very kind and sweet! My son loved making a new friend and is looking forward to keeping in touch on Skype. I love having the energy to get out and explore when I go on trips. I remember in the past sitting in my hotel room wishing I wasn't so tired so I could go out and see the sites. Last night my 12 year old got tired before me! -

Found the treadmill at the hotel, but only made it 10 min before running out of energy. Finished the rest at snails pace. Might need to wear my running shoes tonight to burn a few more calories at the wharf. -

I have been sick and have fallen so far off the wagon I'm afraid I won't be able to get back on. Feeling better today, so I'm going to try to get back in the saddle and go find me a treadmill at the hotel. If I don't, I'm sure Laura will kick my butt tonight! -

I am a little bit taller than you (5'11"), but started around the same weight. I had a really awkward body shape going on from 240 down to 220, but it's now starting to look a lot better. I am right at 5 months and am down to 204. Patience and perseverance! -
Mexico Doctor Questions
deedadumble replied to tampa's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had Dr. Lopez, but had my surgery in Puerto Vallarta, so my experience may be a little different than those of others. Pre-op diet - two to three Protein shakes a day (I used EAS or Premier) and a sensible dinner (protein and veggie) Post-op diet - 2 days of clear liquids, 2 weeks of full liquids (pudding, Jello yogurt, strained Soups included), 2 weeks of blended/pureed, 2 weeks of soft solids Does the Doctor provide pain meds - Yes. I received 2 sample packs of ketorolac tromethamine (6 pills each) when I checked out of the hospital. Does the Dr./Nurse speak English clearly. I will be on my own. - The doctors speak very good English, the nurses in PV do not. Is there a TV and internet in the hospital. - Yes Do they give a leak test before leaving? -- I only had 2. One during surgery and 1 the day after surgery. How were incisions closed? Will I need a follow up in the states to have something removed -- The incisions are closed with internal, dissoluble sutures and external glue. No need for followup. Some of my internal stitches started spitting (coming out of the skin), which I am told is fairly normal. Hope this helps! -
Sorry for hijacking your thread Lannie!

We were thinking of going to Santa Cruz to see the ocean tomorrow after camp. I pick him up at 5pm. Maybe we could stop on the way? Downtown Los Gatos sounds interesting.
