Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Finished W8D2 today (28min run). It felt good and I wasn't struggling to finish it. Looking forward to finishing the program, but I don't run fast enough to finish a 5K in 30 min so my plan is to add about 3 min a week until I'm up to 40 min. My next 5K is Oct 5 at Disney. Looking for a race to run in November and December to keep me motivated. What races have you all signed up for?
  2. I never received any relief from glucosamine/MSM. The only thing that has ever helped is the MegaRed Joint Care. It has Krill Oil and hyaluronic acid, which is the same stuff I have injected into my knees every year (Orthovisc). They sell it at Costco and on Amazon. http://www.schiffmegared.com/megared-joint-care-30-count

Awesome! Congratulations! It's amazing how the time increases in the last few weeks of the program! Does your program have a 20 min run on W6D3?

Major progress today. I have been struggling with runners knee, but trying to change things up to work through it. I went for my run today (W7D3) and wore an older pair of shoes (Brooks) and really concentrated on shortening my stride. I'm tall 5'11", so my tendency is to want to use a longer stride. I shortened my stride by about 4" and increased my cadence by about 10 strides per minute. I finished the 22 minute run without any pain. Amazing!

    fever blister

I had a dentist use a laser on mine a few years ago and I've only had one since then (I got it lasered as well). It kills the virus and makes it heal faster. I think it helps it from coming back in the same spot. Search google for cold sore laser and you'll find a bunch of info.

Has anyone dealt with runners knee? My knee only starts to hurt after I've been out running for a while. Feels ok after I stop. Hurts to go down stairs. I guess I need to get in to the orthopedic and maybe get some Orthovisc injections.

    Question

I used to have cold sores every few months, but a few years ago I was so frustrated with them that I started researching how to treat them. I found out that there are some dentists that treat them with lasers. I tried it once (you have to catch it pretty early) and I didn't have another one for about a year and a half. I treated that one and it has been almost two years.

That soon after surgery it's definitely something you should call your doctor about.

If it hasn't healed yet and it smells you should have it checked by your doctor. It could be a bacterial, yeast or fungal infection. All of these have distinctive smells. If your incision has healed I would guess that it's a yeast infection. I have had those before and have treated with soap and Water and drying really well (a hair dryer works) then using an OTC yeast treatment. It usually will clear it up in one or two applications.

Teeth correction needed as a VSG vet?

I have always taken pretty good care of my teeth. I have an autoimmune disorder in my mouth (lichen planus) that makes it challenging at times. One thing I started doing a few years ago is getting professional cleanings 3 times a year instead of two. I think it has really made a difference in my teeth and my flareups from the LP. It costs a little bit to have it done, but because my husband has changed insurance coverage due to job changes, I've rarely had to pay for that extra cleaning. I would recommend it to anyone that has neglected tooth care for a while.

    Can I Run?

Those of you that are wanting to start and would like some additional support, join us on the message thread: Started Couch to 5k today. Anyone keen? Here's a link: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/68756-started-couch-to-5k-today-anyone-keen/ My recommendations are to take it slow and don't compare your pace to anyone else but yourself. Also, for the first 6months to year, don't worry about increasing your pace. Just run at whatever feels comfortable to you. Repeat days or weeks if you need to. Most of the programs are for running a 5K in 30 min after 8 weeks, but for most of us starting out (especially if you are not near goal weight) that is unreasonable. After I finished the initial 8week program (but it took me about 11 weeks) and was running for 30min straight I added about 1-2 min every other run until I was able to run for 3.1 miles. When I first did the program I did my first 5K in 45min. I "ran" (slowly jogged) the whole way and felt awesome about my accomplishment. I re-injured my knee and stopped running, gained 30 pounds and then decided to have WLS. In May, I ran my first 5K after my surgery. I used Jeff Galloway's run-walk-run method and finished in 42 minutes. I started C25K about a month after surgery and finished it, but got sick for a while and restarted back at 3wks. I'm on week 7 now and feeling so much better. One thing that I have noticed is that it doesn't have a significant impact on the rate that I lose. I'm usually burning an additional 350-450 calories on C25K days, which is only 1,200 cal per week. This is only about 1/3 of a pound. You have to be very careful that the added exertion doesn't make you hungrier and cause you to eat those calories. It is so helpful to set a target race for yourself. My first race was the Disney Princess 5K. I signed up after I had made it through the 3rd week because by then I knew that I could do it and I needed something to help motivate me on days I felt like giving up. This time around I'm signed up for the Disney Haunted 5K (I live in Florida and the Disney races are a special treat). Color runs are also a fun race to set as a target race. You can find a calendar of all the races in your area on active.com. Finally, you will need to drink more fluids on days that you run. Every few weeks you should weigh yourself before and after a run. Drink between 16-24 ounces of Water for every pound lost during a run. So, if your normal amount is 64ou, drink about 80ou. This is so important to prevent stalling due to dehydration. Good luck!

KT stands for kinesiology tape. It comes in strips with paper backing. Each strip can be split down the middle. It is used to provide support to joints and muscles. In my opinion, you can make an injury worse if you apply it incorrectly, so the first time you use it get it applied by a trained therapist or doctor. I have use it on my knee for chondromalacia, but it doesn't seem to help.

Made it through the dreaded W6D3 20 min run. My knee was hurting at the end, but I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. Starting W7 this weekend!

Thanks so much for this BTB! It reminded me of a run I had a couple years ago. I had just passed 2 miles and this guy was riding in the opposite direction. He actually pulled to the side and yelled out "you're doing great!" How awesome is that? Wouldn't the world be such a better place if we all supported each other like that? I try to pass it on while Im out running, but Im usually out so early I never see anyone. I'm still struggling with knee pain. It's really strange because it doesn't hurt when Im running, only when walking. I'm thinking about scheduling Orthovisc injections for it, but they usually last 12 months for me and it's only been 8 this time. I finished W6D2 today.
  17. No way I would be able to pass up the Mickey shaped beignets at the Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square! They are my favorite food in the whole world and at 147 calories a piece, well worth the splurge. Congratulations for avoiding temptation!

Back on track after taking about a week off for knee pain. Felt pretty good today doing W6D1. Took it really slow and wore my knee brace. No pain afterward. Also wore my new Adidas Springblades and felt like I was a lot less fatigued after running.

It's really accurate for my running/walking route that I take, but not sure how accurate for normal activity. I use it more as a motivation tool to try to hit 10000 every day. I don't really care how far Im going as long as I'm moving more than I ever have during the day. If you need more accuracy, go with a Garmin or something like that.
