PRE-OP Diet: TODAY I MESSED UP, BIG HUGE MEGA TIME :-(
NurseGrace replied to PatliPriya's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are going to be fine but from here on out you need to take this diet more seriously. You have not ruined anything so you don't need to have some type of doomsday mood about the whole thing. The most important time pre-op as far as food goes are the last 7-5 days. -
Un-supportive friends/family?
NurseGrace replied to samantha(:'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You would really do yourself a service to stop counting these people among your friends. It's hard and it sucks because I think in most cultures cutting people off is considered sort of.... unstable or cold... but sometimes its really important. If you examine relationships like that there us usually a lot more issues than the back-handed comments anyway. Those are usually a system of other issues. I'm not telling you to divorce all your buddies, but you might consider it. I did, and it stung for a while and it was hard to take sometimes and I DID experience some loneliness but working through that hsa allowed me to take my life to a completely different level, meanwhile those girls are still living with mom and dad at the age of 27 and mooching off other people and society in general. -
Do people really do this s**t?
NurseGrace replied to fatrosie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The important thing to remember when in these situations is that if you value those relationships AT ALL you need to realize that these people, as clueless as they are, mean well. My second thing to say on this subject is that this is a SHINING example of why I do not share this information - everyone who has a chip on their shoulder about losing 4 pounds and keeping it off for a few months will give you their opinions, philosophies, and rules about all things dietary and fitness. -
I have to agree with you. If you have a certain goal so long as it is not unhealthy you should go for it. Most people around us on some level like for things to stay the same, because change is threatening because it makes other people feel like they should be doing better. It's not so black and white though of course, no one sits around thinking "Oh I don't want that person to lose weight" but we do to a large extent encourage mediocrity. So, if you want to lose those last pounds I would encourage you to do so. Try not to sit around thinking about how unhappy you are about your gain, because it was very small. Make the changes you know you need to make, or just get more serious about it in general and you will be there in no time.

Yes and no. You really do not want to be eating soft mushy stuff, even if it is only just a little bit, because it defeats the secondary purpose of the sleeve, which is KEEPING you full. In the beginning this doesn't really matter, but later on when things are going more smoothly those three bites of whatever it might be (for me, its cheesecake) turns into 4 bites, and guess what? ten minutes later you'll be able to have another 4 bites... before you know it, you've thrown down ALMOST like you used too with 2 moderately sized pieces of cheesecake... Not that I would know anything about that.... Now, that being said, yes, most of your days are going to look like normal foods, but just bear in mind that you should still avoid certain things because of their consistency.

Ideally we really don't want to be eating mushy stuff but if you are craving potatoes I think its OK to do that once in a while. Not every day is going to be picture perfect lean Protein first, nonstarchy veg (solid) I say go for it, just not every day.

Bye-bye Lane Bryant!
NurseGrace replied to cantwaittolose's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I can still shop at lane Bryant but in a brave show of commitment and solidarity to the cause I have unsubscribed from their promotional emails. Im not buying any significant clothing until i get to a size 14ish. Until then walmart will have to do. -

Piercing pain after eating? 1 Week Post-Op
NurseGrace replied to CeCe531's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Reverse back to liquids and call your surgical team. Piercing pain is not normal. It could just be too soon to transition but it could be something else. -
Puttin it out there
NurseGrace replied to Amanda626's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
probably not like you did before but you will create a new normal. -
how much can you take in?
NurseGrace replied to pammie37's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is just a simple mistake in what you should be fundamentally looking for as a bariatric patient in regards to what feeling you should be searching for Your goal should not be to get "full" your goal should be to eat enough to keep you going. Comfortably unhungry, actually. Pushing your new tummy to absolute capacity isn't the best. -
Lying about Weight Loss Surgery !
NurseGrace replied to sarahzamudio1091's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some of us have really ugly, judgmental people in our lives. This topic has been sort of rehashed to death and I have explained this before but I don't mind telling it again because there may be new people trying to decide what to do and this is the thread they find first. I had a lapband back when they were all the rage before it came out that lap band patients do no better statistically than weight watchers people. It was great at first, lost about 45 pounds and got down to about a size 14ish. Then all the struggles came. Later on I found out that I had suffered a slip, but they did not discover that for years. I lived with throwing up constantly, eating to make up for it, eating all the things WLS patients shouldn't have because they were the only things that wouldn't make me PUKE. Long story short, gained all the weight back, plus a little for good measure. Most people didn't see the sickness, they just saw the weight creeping back. It was aweful, I was in so much pain and people are cruel. It's easy to say you don't give a flying youknowwhat when everything is going great because the weight loss is its own reward but when the stuff hits the fan, and you NEED support and people are talking about you when your not in the room.... It's not so easy anymore, and unfortunately, thats when it really matters. I don't try to talk people out of telling people, because its a personal thing, but being a bariatric patient of 6 years.... my perspective is different. If you have nothing but smooth sailing its one thing, but if you don't and you have told everyone, hang onto your hats because you'll be in for a lesson in how people REALLY are. -
Help! Less than 3 weeks away & STILL undecided!
NurseGrace replied to Lee 316's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I put off this surgery for two years until I was certain. While it looks like everyone is basically telling you those are normal feelings (they are) you need to get clear on what you want in life. Sometimes those "simple pleasures" are not so innocent for us big people - sometimes those are the very things actively killing us. Not to be so dramatic, bit really... Sometimes the fantastic meal and the glass of wine are not the same thing for you and me as it is for our skinnier counterparts that don't have issues with food. I have no way of knowing if you personally have food issues because I don't know you, but most people who eat themselves up to a weight where WLS is an option DO have food issues so that's my working assumption unless people say otherwise. Most people experience a bit of a slump at one point or another post surgery when the reality hits home that the amounts we used to eat just is not a possibility anymore.... so that is all normal. However, you cannot have your stomach back. If you walk into the hospital and go through with this, things will fundamentally change for you, for the better most likely if you work it to your advantage AND assuming you have no complications. Complications are rare but they do happen, how comfortable are you with that? I went in to surgery knowing what could happen to me and I encourage you to do the same, if we are realistic in our expectations I think we are better equipt to deal with any and all possibly outcomes. -
I'm only about 2 months out but so far the only "stall" I have had was the one from the first month. It lasted nearly two and a half weeks too so brace yourself. Hopefully that won't happen to you but it might so get ready. I lived by the mantra "I cannot maintain THIS WEIGHT eating only 800 calories a day, it's not physically possible, this will pass" and sure enough, it DID pass, but it took time. I don't know why that happened but it seems to be pretty much the norm around here. This month I have not experienced a stall in weight loss having anything to do with my cycle. In fact, this month food is a real turn off/debby downer.

I'm not ever one to give marriage advice, as I have been married myself for only 2 years but I can't imagine how that much feel. At a different time this may not have been such a big deal, but times are hard and now is not the time to be hoping from one job to another whenever you don't like how someone looks at you. Now, I say that with caution because I don't know WHY he wants to leave his job because you didn't say but maybe you could ask him this - If this is really his 6th or 7th job he has left in the past year or so I think he needs to get real about what his expectations are because in THAT many situations HE is the common factor. Most people in their life experience a terrible job or two, and most people even get fired at least once, but it sounds like he may be taking this too the extreme. Maybe he hates the field he is in?

Probably should not drive until you get this business straightened out so you don't hurt yourself and/or others. That sucks that it happened, hopefully you didn't hit your head

Title says it all. food has lost its stronghold on me. I found myself feeling a bit depressed while hovering over my fifth of a chipotle burrito bowl not knowing why when it hit me - I was not nearly as happy to be eating that as I used too. Food has lost its shine. I dont have anything to ask, I just thought I would share. I suppose its a good thing I am working and have somewhere else to put my focus because a few weeks ago I think this could have thrown me into a major depression.

sick as a dog...Lipton Soup ?
NurseGrace replied to rxkid2384's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I would imagine that would be ok. Just avoid the noodle if thay bothers you but honestly those are so mushy I could hardly see it posing any real problem. -
I never ate pickels before surgery but I have them in the fridge now. Funny how that works.
-
I think they are fine, but I am not a hardcore low-carber either. I try to keep that number down but frankly, sometimes you NEED them. I maybe wouldn't have them every single day but once in a while is fine.

I need to whine - dress sizes
NurseGrace replied to thehappycat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think that we bigger ladies take longer to get out of those big sizes. PLus size clothes are usually strechy and all that good stuff so they will take you through a lot of sizes -
When did your toughest weight loss plateau occur?
NurseGrace replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
at about two and a half weeks out I stopped losing weight for nearly three weeks no matter what I did. It was very frustrating. It passed and I'm fine now, but it SUUUUUCKED while I was going through it. -

So, this is not me trying to be confrontational but this "toxins" nonsense makes me cringe and it gets repeated so often that people just accept that it's a real thing. No one is walking around with a buildup of toxins in their body unless they are experiencing multisystem organ failure. You just don't have magical toxins floating around your body waiting to be snatched up by wraps, diet pills, magical drinks and the list goes on and on. Nearly all medical people who are not getting paid to promote a topic laugh at those types of claims. It's just the latest thing to separate you from your money. There are only a few exceptions to this, such as lead and other trace minerals that can build up to a toxic level despite normal kidney and liver function, but if you have that going on, you have got WAY bigger problems than will ever be solved with some kind of wrap promising to help you avoid a tummy tuck even though you lost 200+ pounds or whatever, you know what I'm saying? People who say they use these and do not having sagging skin after radical weight loss probably would not have had sagging skin anyway. The only two factors that matter in terms of skin sagging is genetics (meaning you are either pre-disposed to have good skin snap-back anyway) AND/OR muscle mass. Even muscle mass wont matter that much if you lose more than about 100 pounds or so.
