    Hypothyroids & Weightloss

I think it's important to point out that there are at least two types of hypothyroidism: thyroiditis (which can be a temporary phase) and Hashimoto's (an auto-immune disease). When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism ten years ago, I thought I had the temporary kind. My doctors believed that eventually my body would get its groove back. That did not happen and subsequently I needed increasing doses of synthroid to remain functional. Finally I asked someone what was going on and they told me I had Hashimoto's. I suspect most of us have Hashimoto's. The symptoms are mostly classic hypothyroidism which is why most doctors don't differentiate it for patients. However, like all auto-immune diseases, we can benefit from limiting gluten, dairy and sugar. I tried to give up gluten before surgery. However, I am not sure how I would get rid of dairy from my diet now. I am relying heavily on skim milk and Greek yogurt. The other thing you have to remember is that 20 years ago, they only gave thyroid medicine to people whose TSH fell outside of very strict parameters. Today, the modern approach is to treat symptoms. If your TSH is outside of norms but you are asymptomatic, your doctor doesn't need to give you anything. If your TSH is still "normal" but you have symptoms, they might give you something. I don't think of synthroid like medication for hypertension and diabetes. Being hypothyroid is NOT a co-morbidity. Glad if someone doesn't need their synthroid any more, but I would think that you are not typical in our group. I was sleeved on 12/17/12. Prior to surgery I lost 20 pounds from July to December. Day of surgery I weighed 222 and I have lost about 20 lbs post surgery (at 6-7 weeks). I am hovering around the entry-way to "one-der land." Because I am only 5'3 1/2", my BMI is still obese. I have had a few non-scale victories though....I can wear some bras that haven't fit me in ages. I am lighter than I have ever been in the past 8 years. Overall, from July to now, I have lost a "toddler." My 4-year old doesn't even weigh 40 lbs.
  2. Just a reminder... You still have lost more than me and I haven't stalled. I just don't lose much on any given week. I think your body is just adjusting to the diet and exercise.

    Hypothyroids & Weightloss

My weight loss has been slower than most, but it is coming off better than without surgery. Good luck and keep us posted.

Has anyone stopped having their period?

Got it 3 days after I posted. So I spotted. Then nothing. Then got my period late. In the interim, some to NUT and she said not having it was pretty common due to change in diet. She told me that I need to take an iron supplement of 50-100 mcg. Can't believe how many vitamins i am taking.
  5. I see a ton of posts from people reclaiming their TOM, but my period has stopped 6 weeks post-op. I had one 2 weeks post op...on time. Iwas wondering if this means my body does not like the new calorie intake..
  6. re: "stalls" - I am still struggling to get to 20 lbs off a full six weeks post surgery. I eat protein. I exercise. (Got to 6 miles of walking yesterday) but it hasn't come off easily. So you can imagine how I feel when someone loses 20, 30, 40 lbs in the first month. Even if you stall for a WHOLE month, you still will be "ahead" of me! So, even though my weight loss paradigm has little relevance to most of you who have lost a lot and stalled, I agree with other posters who are further along...You just have to keep at it. I suspect that the huge stalls have a lot to do with your body adjusting to both the weight loss and the change in calories, but eventually your body will adjust and you will lose more.
  7. I had my first TOM (post surgery) on time...two weeks after surgery. Was due for 2nd TOM this past weekend and I had some spotting but that's it. Anyone else had this problem?
  8. I'm only (almost) six weeks out, but I have eaten out three times now. Twice I had soup (1 cup-size, not bowl-size) and once my husband ordered salmon, so I could eat some of it. In the soup scenarios, I did not have anyone question what I was eating. In the salmon scenario, I did have to explain to the server why I wasn't ordering my own meal and why I wasn't drinking anything.
  9. How are you doing? When there is no news, it sometimes worries me more. Hope you are okay.
  10. Soup is the only thing I can make and share in it. Made some really good crock pot chicken the other day, but even a small amount was painful for me to eat.

    All of my December sleevers...

Sleeved 12/17...still not 20 lbs down. As for what we eat, I agree that without at least one Isopure bottle a day (40 g of protein), I would never come close to getting teh protein I need to eat. Solid forms of protein are really hard to eat...Soft veggies are easier, but they don't help with the protein goal.

    All of my December sleevers...

Enjoyed your video. Think it will be helpful to people exploring this kind of surgery. Some differences between us: * I didn't have a drain, so I think my healing has been going faster. I understand why some surgeons prefer them...especially those working with clients from other countries, but there are other ways to check for leaks besides having a drain. * The diet given by my doctor was as follows: 2 weeks of full liquids and purees that could be theoretically drunk through a straw (although we were told NO STRAWS), followed by two weeks of normal purees and "smooth" foods. By week five, if there aren't any complications, we are allowed to eat anything...even though I don't. Like you, I think seafood is easier to tolerate than other kinds of meat. I like tofu but for some reason I haven't had any. I have eaten red meat and chicken, but it's harder going down. * I use a fitbit to monitor my activity. It is a pedometer, but interacts with my computer and I can log food online and stuff like that. * My weight loss has been slow. I haven't even hit 20 lbs (post-surgery) off, yet. But, I am walking 4-5 miles at least five times a week and I am eating around 600-800 calories a day. * I was sleeved on the 17th. I am a mom. Christmas was harder for me than for you. I needed to make things that my family would enjoy and I was on this joyless diet. I didn't bake, either, and that is an activity that I missed. Thanks for your video! Keep up the good work!
  13. Candy apple- glad you are doing better. Pneumonia is no small thing!
  14. Have you heard anything? Are you okay or would you like some prayers?
  15. I just wanted to respond to the stricture thing...My doctor told me BEFORE surgery that strictures were one surgery-specific problem (like leaking). Unlike leaks, the surgeon can fix a stricture without opening you up again. My doctor said they just stick something down your throat and loosen it up. Maybe that is an oversimplification and I am sure your throat will be sore from the endoscopy if nothing else, but my general sense is that a stricture is less of a dangerous complication. I hope that sort of makes you feel better. I am so sorry that you have had such a rough recovery and I sincerely hope that this is the last of your hurdles.

    All of my December sleevers...

I was sleeved on the 17th. I have lost about 12 lbs and I have been working out on elliptical machines since January 3rd. I average about 4 miles. I am anxious to speak with my nutritionist, but it doesn't happen until January 31st.
  17. Shrimp and Fitbit - Yesterday I discovered shrimp (jumbo size) on sale at the grocery store. Bought some and ate a serving (3). They went down better than tuna and canned chicken. Just an FYI for anyone that likes shrimp. re: fitbit - did 23 floors on the stair master only to discover that the fitbit does not recognize stairs on machines like that. Bummer.
