Eating around other people
orthoman replied to junebug38's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only time it's really noriceable is the first few months after surgery.... I'm five months out now, and most people to be honest with you don't care about what you're eating - they're too involved with what THEYre eating -
People that start off at a higher bmi are going to lose at a much higher rate because their daily caloric deficit is going to be much higher at first. I started at a bmi of 38 on December 28. I'm now nearly five months in and I've lost 50 pounds and my bmi is 31. So losing more than 7 points of bmi in five months I'm very happy with that... As long as I keep losing... When people talk about how much weight they've lost over a specific time frame, that number can only make sense if you know their starting BMI

Anyone ever notice that its next to impossible to find REAL food out there - you know, meat, vegetables, etc? Everywhere you go, if its fast, it's crap! Looking for a fast place to eat tonight and the only thing that came to mind was Boston Market! Any other ideas out there? It's no wonder everyone is fat!

I can eat 3 Popsicles (sugar free) in one sitting?
orthoman replied to Kellylynn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've got a Popsicle addiction - probably have three or four every day (when I'm not out of them) -
protein drinks opinions
orthoman replied to ********'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I was in early postoperative, I drank the chocolate protein drinks, and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out who the idiot was that thought people who needed protein wanted to drink a nasty sweet chocolate flavored drink! It occurred to me then that someone should invent a beef flavored savory protein drink, but now that seems gross, too! -
How much time off before returning to work?
orthoman replied to Linkin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had surgery on Friday, was back seeing pts in the office the next Wednesday, but I didn't feel very good, and my office manager said I looked "yellow". Didn't operate on anyone for two weeks, though. Wasn't that thoughtful of me? -
I wish we could put this issue to rest once and for all - it's not going to get any larger, it simply looks better in its new and improved neighborhood, so to speak.

One week post op and only lost 5lbs!?!
orthoman replied to lovedlov's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most people put on 10 pounds or more in the first few days after surgery because of IV fluids. If you've lost that plus five more, you're doing good! Congrats! -
Ideas for what to tell people?
orthoman replied to BriDawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's just so much easier to tell the truth - plus, you might just really help someone who really needs to talk with someone who's been through it themselves. Yesterday I met a patient who is really obese, and her hip is wearing out quickly and she's only 48 years old. So even though I just met her And I'm her doctor, I told her about my experience, and now she's going to see my surgeon. I feel that I can use my experience to help people. When you tell others, they are almost always supportive. I don't worry too much what people think about me as long as they keep it to themselves -
I get hiccups when I am full. It's my last warning telling me that if I keep going, I might see something I've just eaten again very soon...

Movie popcorn is from the DEVIL haha! One small popcorn from the movie theater has something like 750 calories and goes down way too easily.... Making the cross with my fingers! Stay way! Stay away!!!

Stomach stretching!?!?
orthoman replied to nikie409's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would definitely say that it's possible to eat more now at 4.5 months postoperative than I could the first month out, but I'm really not all that hungry, and I find that I am still Satisfied on WAY less food than ever before in my life. However, all of the slider foods, like carbs, crackers and the like, really go down easy and you still have to make a conscious decision to NOT eat that stuff all the time! BUT staying away from that junk is MUCH easier mentally for me than any time I can remember in my life! not sure how much of that is mental, and how much of that is the physical limits of the sleeve, For me personally, my desire to eat bad stuff has gone WAY down.... -
When can we drink soda
orthoman replied to amielou26's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think an occasional soda is fine, just like an Occasional drink is fine. You aren't gonna die if you have a diet coke! I used to be really bad with them though, and now four months out I can tolerate maybe a half of a diet coke , but the carbonation does fill you up quickly. I've learned to obey the signals when my stomach is full - when I first feel full, I better stop. When I get the hiccups I really really should stop, and then anything beyond that, I'm in danger of puking....but I'm sure it's different for everyone... -
Prncs228, thanks for the "idears" those are some good ones. I'm about 4 months out now and I've lost 45 pounds so I need to update my picture

There's plenty of places in the world (Asia comes to mind) where on any given day you can find vendors on the street serving grilled seafood, chicken, various k-bobs of grilled meats and veggies, but just try to find that kind of food quick here in suburban America - it doesn't really exist here. but you can surely find Sonic, McDonald's, and fried chicken on every street corner - never really noticed that until post sleeve, either!

The other day I'm pretty sure a woman was checking me out - I simply can't remember the last time that happened and it felt nice

When do you stop feeling hungry?
orthoman replied to CoreyCan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still get hungry, but it's much easier to satisfy, on FAR fewer calories than in the past. -
Please give some answers or encouragement
orthoman replied to moviemom05's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would like to point out what a GREAT post mimiMermaid just put out there--- the secret to major weight loss is that you have to adhere to the right behaviors FOR SO LONG, regardless of mood, parties, holidays, how you're feeling on a particular day, etc --- and you have to be good like that for YEAR or longer!!! Most of us get depressed and give up - it's happened to me a thousand times. But NOW, you really can't screw up, you have to be "good" all the time, even if you don't happen to be losing weight right now. And over long periods of time, that translates into major weight loss. -
15 days post op and freezing!
orthoman replied to rachel marie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So funny you guys I had that problem for the first month or so postoperative- but now it's gone I'm currently three months out. Everywhere I went I was wearing a jacket! So, apparently it's pretty common -
quickly full but hungry every couple hours
orthoman replied to KimmieMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I'm 3 months postoperative and I wouldn't say that I don't get hungry - I definitely do, but it's different now - I don't get ravenous like I used to and eating is just not this all-encompassing desire like it used to be. This surgery definitely took a major edge off of hunger. And when I do get hungry, my eyes are way way bigger than my stomach! I'll get this and this and that on the plate , and previously I would have eaten all of it and gone back for more, now I eat half and I feel like I might barf! I think the deal is, you end up eating much less over the same amount of time, and once you do that month after month, there can be no other result than to lose substantial weight. -
Frumpynomore, what's awesome is I've gone down one full shirt size, I'm about to hit another lower shirt size, I've down down two pants sizes, and I suddenly have all these clothes I can wear again. It's amazing what a diff 40 pounds can make in your clothes!
-
Well it's now 3 months postoperative and about 40 pounds gone, and I can finally wear my lab coats again ! I bet it's been three year since I've been able to wear them, and I was so stubborn because I absolutely refused to buy bigger ones.
-
TES yes that's what I meant, it's obviously a sleeve benefit - I never could have lost forty pounds in three months without the sleeve!
-
Not happy with this before and after pic
orthoman replied to leighleigh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I see the difference in your shoulder/upper arm, there is a substantial difference in your abdomen, and in your-um butt. I noticed that it looked like your weight loss was 20 pounds? If that's so, most people couldn't tell when I had lost 20, but now that its almost 40, people notice all the time -
By abt 4 weeks postoperative I was able to eat some solid foods in small amounts. Now I'm 11 weeks postoperative and I can eat pretty much anything in small amounts, but my sleeve does not like bread or pasta at all...
