So here's the situation. I was on 1000 mg of metformin 2x, 4 mg of Glimepride, and 10 mcg of Byetta 2x a day before surgery. After surgery, my sugar rocketed up to 300 in the hospital. I was sent home on insulin with a dosing schedule, but they eliminated the Glimepride and Byetta. My numbers started coming back down once I was home and even good down to around 120 for fasting in the morning. Even once I started on solid foods (I'm 8 weeks out now) the readings were good. Then about 2 weeks ago, the numbers started creeping back up. They had been running in the low 200's in the morning again. This morning was my lowest in a while at 190. I've been following my diet pretty well and not eating a lot of carbs, so I'm not sure what's going on. I thought VSG was supposed to help my sugar reading. Is anyone else experiencing this? I feel so lost.

What to do when your surgeon leaves town.......

So I get the mail yesterday, and in it is a letter from my surgeon's office stating that after May 31 (last week) he is no longer practicing at the bariatric center at the hospital I went to. Not only that, the M.D. that was there is also leaving! They do have a new surgeon coming in and the it sounds like the staff, including the PAs are going to still be there. My question is this - has anyone every had this happen to them? And is it worth continuing to follow up with them? The hospital is an hour away and I don't feel like I have gotten very good support from them due to that fact. Also, every time I go I end up feeling like a failure because I haven't lost the weight they think I should have by now. I"m thinking of just sticking with my primary care doctor closer to home at this point since I have been forturnate to not have had any complications and am almost 7 months out. I know people who go to Mexico obviously can't follow up with their surgeons. Any thoughts? -

THANK YOU! Finally, someone who gets what I am going thru! I was sleeved Nov 12 and have lost 42 pounds, more than half of that in the fist 6 weeks. I was wondering the same thing about going back to the protein shakes instead of breakfast and lunch and then trying to eat a healthy dinner, but my NUT said it wouldn't work. Well, just for kicks, I thought I'd try a day of it like that, and what do you know, I dropped a pound. Seriously has me wondering if it would work for me if I tried it for a week. -
If you like Starbucks, they also sell their syrups in their stores.

I will e 6 months out on Sunday and I have only lost 41 lbs total so far. I thought I broke my stall 2 weeks ago, but all I did was lose 5 lbs and gain it right back, probably because of medication I have been on. It's the most frustrating thing in the world. I feel like I'm the one person out there this surgery is not working for. -

I'm right there with you, except my stall has been going on for more like 6 weeks. It's not even that really. I would loose a couple of pounds, then gain them back, then loose them. It's the same stubborn 5 lbs that just WON'T GO AWAY! I've just been trying to focus on eating right and exercising, but it's hard to not obsess about it. -
I'm just venting here. I had VSG on 11/12/12. Did really well the first 6 weeks. Once I went back to work in January, it's like the genie said "Poof! No more weight loss for you!" I have struggled and struggled. I am at my breaking point now. I have even avoided the message boards here for weeks because I get even more depressed reading about everyone's success. Nothing I try seems to work for me anymore. I am exercising like I should. I am eating what I should, and avoiding what I shouldn't be eating. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get beyond that one hash mark on the scale. I have an appointment with the surgeon next week and I really don't want to go to it. I feel like a complete failure when it comes to this surgery. I have lost 42 lbs. so far, but that was all before January. Since then - nothing! Granted, I haven't gained any either, but I still feel like a complete failure. I was religiously logging my food on MFP, but found that if I did that, all I did was make myself feel hungry and deprived so I had to let up on being so obsessive about that. Now, I just don't know what to do. I am about ready to resign myself to the fact that I am just going to be this way the rest of my life.

I'm completely there with you. I did not go to communion until I was off the liquid phase of the post-op diet. After that, I did would take the host, but avoided the wine until my diet plan said it was OK, I think that was 45 days post-op. My concern was mainly for the heartburn it may cause because wine would cause me heartburn pre-op if I wasn't careful. Haven't had any problems so far -
How long were you off work?

I ended up taking the full 6 weeks off. After reading multiple posts, I figured I would be able to go back to work within 2 weeks and only planned on being off from work for that long. BUT my doctor/PA suggested that if I have 6 weeks to take them, not so much for the healing from the actual surgery, but more for the dietary portion of ot. Boy, am I glad I did that! Learning how to eat and preparing the food was a HUGE part of the recovery I had not really thought about. It was really hard to go back to work after 7 weeks off (also took a week of vacation at the end), so much so that I was a little worried about going back simply because of the food aspect of it. I spent a half hour the night before I went back to work packing my lunch and making sure I had everything I could possibly need ready to go the next morning. -

I was sleeved on 11/12/12 and am currently 13 weeks post-op. I have lost 38 lbs. but have not lost any since the end of December. I am currently in week 7 of a stall that started when I went back to work. Very frustrating, but people keep telling me they can tell I've lost weight and am looking good. It's good to see there are plently of people out there like me. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to be the exception to the surgery working. Then I realize that I am ONLY 13 weeks out and I have a long ways to go yet. Patience is not exactly my strong suit -
Average calorie intake

I am averaging about 1200 each day. I see on here where people are only taking in 600 - 700 and I am worried that I am eating too much. I was never given a total I should stick to, simply told to eat protein first and not to worry too much about the rest. Very frustrating. -
Sick leave vs Vacation leave

I used sick leave for a couple of reasons. My vacation time is just that - vacation. This surgery was a legitimate medical procedure. That's what my sick time is for, I'm going to use it! I don't get paid for any that I don't use. It's a benefit for me and one that I know a lot of other people don't have readily available to them. -
Who still loves to eat after being sleeved?

I still find myself to be hungry and craving certain foods, but I don't eat nearly what I used to of them. I hardly eat any breads, pastas, or rice. I find that I just don't crave them like I used to and they make me feel slow and sluggish, so i guess I'm not missing anything! I still find myself thinking about food a lot. I wish I were like some people on here who say they are no longer hungry. I so wish that was me, but I find that the further out from surgery I get, the more normal I feel, the more I worry that the sleeve isn't working. -
I completely understand your frustration. I stalled out at 7 weeks also......and am still stalled out at 11 weeks. Haven't lost a lb. to speak of. I keep fluctuating 3-5 lbs each day. I'm ready to pull my hair out (if it wasn't already falling out, thank you very much anesthetic!). Everything I have read says it will get moving again when the old body is ready to. I just wish it would happen soon!

I'm in the same boat. Sleeved on 11/12/12 and dropped 15 lbs really fast. Then stalled out for 2 weeks; actually gained weight - all water - had to go back on blood pressure meds since I was retaining so much water. Once that kicked in I dropped 15 lbs really fast after that. I'm 8 weeks out and stalled out -- again! It's very frustrating and there are days I'm not sure what I'm doing. -
I'm having the same problem! I'm 8 weeks post-op and ever since I went back to work last week (between 6 weeks of sick leave and vacation time), I have found that my "stomach" actually growls when I'm sitting at my desk working. It makes me so mad because when I was home and relaxed, I didn't have this problem at all. I've been trying to make sure I'm getting as much protein in as possible during the work day, even supplimenting with a protein shake either mid-morning or mid-afternoon whenever I feel those "hunger pangs" coming on. It does seem to help, but it's so frustrating.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. This was also one of the main reasons I had the surgery. I have been very careful of what I am eating and/or drinking. My protein drinks are very low carb, so I'm not sure what is going on. -
Not happy with my 4 week post-op visit

Had a bad time at my 4 week post-op visit today. First, had a really rough time getting my protien in on the pureed phase of the diet. Just didn't do well. Ended up gaining 3 lbs. and my ankles are swelling. Now, I don't know if that's because of the lack of protien recently or the fact that my lovely time of the month is due to start any day now. I'm thinking it's the second. Still, pretty depressed because I not only stalled, but gained. Going to try to supplement with the protien shakes on the next phase and see if that helps some. This is so much harder than I expected. I did so much better on the liquid phase of the post-op diet. -
I would definitely at least call the surgeon's office and ask. The only "pain" I ever really had was where the internal stitches were on my side where they removed my stomach and that has slowly gone away as they begin to dissolve. I am just 4 weeks out also and feel great, but everyone is different. If nothing else, at least the phone call would put your mind at ease.

I had VSG surgery 4 weeks ago and managed to drop 20 lbs like it was nothing within 2 1/2 weeks. Since then, nada! Is this normal? I haven't gained any, but it seems like since I started on the pureed diet, I haven't lost any more weight.
