My daughter is a hair stylist, I had my hair dyed 2 weeks post-op and like MichiganChic kept my regular schedule of every 4 weeks. I am 3 1/2 months post op. Just this last appointment (1 week ago) my daughter commented that my hair seemed a little thinner than usual. I typically have very thick hair. We decided to cut it short & sassy. I love it!

A yummy and healthy chicken salad idea
Oliver's Mom replied to Fiddleman's topic in Food and Nutrition
This sounds DELISH - it has many of my favorites - goat cheese, beets, & garlic chicken! Thanks for the idea. I know what is for lunch or dinner tomorrow. -
Ohhhhh, poor Mom. I also had a hernia repair at the same time, but I had a totally uneventful recovery. I will keep her in my thoughts.

Just ordered the book - one for me and one for me son in law. I think it might be very helpful in reducing my knee pain.

Have any of you experienced runners had knee pain? What did you do? I have a call in to my surgeon's office to see if Glucosamine/Chondroitin is an option. Thanks. -
My sleeve-friendly birthday weekend!
Oliver's Mom replied to TES's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Happy birthday!! What a great sounding weekend long celebration - with the focus on spending great time with your loved ones. I plan to make some of Eggface's Protein ice-cream this week. I won her giveaway of the ice creammaker last month and was so excited!! Keep up the great work TES!! -
I get them when I have reached fullness. It depends on the food for me I think. The denser the protein, the quicker I get full = hiccup!

Week 2 day 1 was last night. New shoes felt great. Still doing a lot of self talk - like you can do this! Good work, keep up this pace, etc. Next week I will go to the class, but as am having a breast biopsy 2 days prior, no running. I can walk, so I plan to walk fast - and as soon as I am cleared to run I will do week 3 on my own. Never in my life would have thought I would EVER feel disappointed when someone told me I could not run. What a shift in mindset....... -

Went shopping for new running shoes today. North East Running Co in Beverly, MA - folks were so great there. Explained I am a newbie at this, they watched me walk without shoes, then had me try on 5 different pairs of shoes. Each time I ran up and down the sidewalk outside the store so they could see how I did. Hahahaha - finally running outside!! I ended up with a great pair of asics in some pretty wild colors. If I'm going to do this, it's gonna be fun! Got some toe socks and some wicking socks. Tomorrow morning I am going to do a 4th day of week 1 - then Thursday nite - move on to Week 2. -
Did everyone hve to give up caffiene?
Oliver's Mom replied to JessicaAnn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Each medical team has different guidelines, I think. My team said no caffeine for 6 months!! We had to be off regular tea & coffee AND decaf tea & coffee prior to surgery. My NUT said I could have decaf after 3 months post op if there was no nausea or vomiting. I tried decaf coffee on my 3 month anniversary and it just didn't taste the same. I will occasionally have a cup in the am, but not every day because I don't 'love it' like I used to. -

Week 1 day 3. I'm going to do a Week 1 Day 4 either tomorrow or Wednesday - before my week 2 class on Thursday night. I confess that on two of the 'run' cycles I just walked super fast because my blisters were killing & (gross) bleeding. I may take tomorrow off of running - just do strength workout to let the toes heal a little. I got the Injinji socks and will likely get fitted for new shoes tomorrow. -

Thank you Fiddle & Butter - I am going to the local running store tomorrow to get myself some socks!! I do love to shop so who knows I may also get some new running shoes. The place gives a discount for the clients (WLS) of the hospital I was sleeved at. Those boots are going in the trash!! OK, not the trash - I'll donate them. And pray there is NO MORE snow. Again, thanks for the words of encouragement. It means the world ....... you're both good guys. I can do this!!! -

Checking in.....week 1 day 2 in the books. A question, or maybe two. Does it get easier as you continue with your training?? I keep thinking about the day I can jog (wog) and feel like I'm working but not having my knees hurt so much. Tell me that as I build up strength & endurance things feel better. AND, yesterday I went for a very brisk walk outside with my husband - we have a foot and a half of snow so I had to wear my snow boots, which gave me blisters between my large toe and the next one on my left foot. I bandaged them up before my training at the Y this am, towards the end of the session I could feel pain from the blisters. I powered thru doing a lot of self talk. Did some errands and when I got home and took off my sneakers I looked like Curt Schilling with a bloody sock!! What do you all suggest to use to cushion the blisters? I can't stop C25K training because of some stinking blisters...... I had my surgery in Dec (3rd) and prior to was diabetic. I'm not on any more meds - but my med team considers me 'in remission' with my diabetes. I'm careful about foot care. Thank you all!! -

Webchickadee - excellent response. Gettinmeback - amazing that you did all of your weight loss in only 6 months - that should tell you you know what to do and you do it well. Web chickadee had a great answer, and she is so correct - we all are behind you, supporting you, encouraging you, knowing you can get to where you want and learn how best to stay there for your body. Good luck girl! You can do it. -
I love crab meat! I hd ever cooked it before I had the surgery. But for New Year's Eve I made King Crab Legs for dinner for my husband & I. We had a fun time cracking the legs and eating the meat. He had Champagne I had Water 1/2 hour after I ate. :-) Now I make it frequently. So yummy and so full of Protein. In fact today I had crab salad made with Greek Yogurt & a squirt of lime, with some herbs in a 1/2 of an avocado topped with a 1/2 slice of cheese broiled for 4 minutes. Yummy & filling. Keep up the great work you are doing so well.

I had my first C25K last night. So day 1 week 1. When I was leaving the house to go, my husband said he looks forward to cheering me on at a 5K race. Sweet. It went ok, better than I had thought it would. Of course, I'm the oldest in the group - and 4 of the 9 folks are runners who wanted to get back into running - no pressure. I am doing this as my personal journey - just like the journey of the sleeve. Driving home after class I felt tired (we also did 30 minutes of strength training) but empowered. The body might be reaching 60 but the drive/determination/commitment/??aspirations are all much much younger. I think there is just one other WLS post op in the class, the rest are hospital employees. -
Interested in people over 55 who have had the Gastric Sleeve.
Oliver's Mom replied to BettyK's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mastiff-Mama - it does get better. Just takes a little time. I was sleeved Dec 3, 2012 so I am now 3 months out. The slow, chew, chew chew way of eating, the little bites, not drinking before or after eating - it all becomes your new normal. We need to be kind and patient with ourselves. It's all so different from how we lived our lives for years, so it will take a little while. Good luck!! -

What kind of cup are you drinking from?
Oliver's Mom replied to two_boysmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started with the little hospital cups, but it was within days that I switched to an insulated 10 oz cup that has a lid. I call it my big girl sippy cup. I actually have 2 of them and a 24 oz one too. I take the 24 oz one when I'm headed out in the car. And use the 16 oz ones when I'm at home. Having the lid with the small opening helped me not gulp the water. You sound like you're doing well. Yay!!!! for you. -

Have my 3 month visit with the surgeon today. Start of process 214 Day of surgery 209 Today - 164 - 50 lbs!!! I've had stalls - but I find that if I have 11 8oz glasses of water plus the other liquids I get in (herbal tea, M-F I have SF Carnation Essentials for breakfast) & exercise at least 5 days a week, then I don't stall. I can do that - for the rest of my life!! :-) -
New Goal Setting for Summer
Oliver's Mom replied to FishingNurse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeve - first let me say I am sorry for your loss. You have a great attitude and you are right, it will happen. My husband's birthday is July 26th. By that date I would like to be down 12 1/2 lbs (I have 25 to lose to get to goal). To accomplish this: I will - 1) train for a 5K - signed up for a couch to 5 K class that starts this Thursday. 2) work with a personal trainer (signed up for 5 weeks of training) 3) continue to follow my current eating regimen of 70+ g Protein, 60+ oz of Water, calories in the 800-1000 range AND 4) take a Strong Woman class (10 weeks) This is SO do-able for us!!
