Answering the haters
playlikeworldchamps replied to jmgtexas's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I read a lot of medical research. for the study mentioned it's 5.8% of all 134,000 women in the study who had clinical food addiction (ages 45-80s) For under age 64 it was 8.6%. this was over all weights. for BMI over 35 it jumps to 15.8-18.6%. so it certainly seems that obesity and food addiction is related. it would be interesting to see a cohort over BMI of 40 and if food addiction is greater percent of those morbidly obese but that was not presented - perhaps not enough over 40 BMI in study? So the medical establishment is confirming with research what we tend to know anecdotally. While it is true that not all obese have food addiction, it is more common in the obese. I believe that sugar over consumption is the cause. there are studies in that area as well. the American journal of clinical nutrition is a great resource. the food addiction study was in the January 2014 edition. -
TOO SKINNY
playlikeworldchamps replied to supermom223's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had some feedback like this too. And since my BMI still says I am 20 pounds over "normal" I ignored it. However....I just got my BF% done and I am in the ideal range for my age now. I am 5-10, 193 pounds which seems very large. But I am 25% BF and the range for my age is 19-28%. So the people saying I am fine as I am may be right! I still want to get in the 180s but I won't stress over it or worry about a Normal BMI anymore. So befor picking a final goal weight get a good BF measurement. You may already be at goal. And those people may possibly be seeing what we cannot in the mirror. (Possibly) -
How do I give up Food?
playlikeworldchamps replied to Myonlybattle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You won't have to give up food forever. The pre op and first couple months are the toughest. Now that I am 14 months out I can eat pretty much anything. The difference is that I usually choose not too. Although I still have weak moments I am able to say no a lot easier now. And if I do fall off the wagon the damage is smaller since I can only fit so much at a time. I used to have issues with mindless binges and just can't do that now. Too much sugar makes me Feel icky now too. I still love food but it does not rule my life anymore. -
What percentage is your protein, carb and fat intake daily?
playlikeworldchamps replied to mommyjamie's topic in Food and Nutrition
I have been using 1300 cals a day since month 3-4. I am 5-10 so can get away with it. I just looked at MFP and I am usually 25-30% protein , 30-40% carbs and 35-40% fat. I eat 70-100g protein a day. I don't count carbs but it is around 100 to 150g. One reason my fat and carbs are high is because beans and nuts are a big part of my diet. My biggest goal is to keep sugar grams under 25g. But if I eat fruit I am flexible on that. -

Suggestions for Applebees?
playlikeworldchamps replied to Jen40's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
do not do not I repeat do not get the quesadilla burger. it is absolutely delish but it has 1500 calories. I ordered one a month ago before checking it on MFP. I ate half and took the rest home. then I checked in MFP. um well I did eat the other half the next day though! a rare treat is what I call it. a once a year treat! I recommend you check out the calories, sugar, etc before going and have a plan and stick to it. -
Low Carb or not....
playlikeworldchamps replied to Iambeautiful's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yup. The bread is a no no. Starchy carbs only rarely for me. For example it's gotta be awesome bakery bread to eat bread. And no rolls with my hamburger. So while I am moderate carb I still do not eat those. Also if I start the days with carbs I will be craving them all day. I don't even eat oatmeal anymore. It's Greek yogurt or a couple eggs for Breakfast now. Oh and I am kenmj11 on MFP -
Low Carb or not....
playlikeworldchamps replied to Iambeautiful's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 14 months out and have lost 120 lbs and still losing very slowly now. I am close to goal. I am moderate carb. In fact I don't count them. I only focus on protein. Minimum of 60 and work to keep sugar carbs 30 or less. But I have Greek yogurt everyday with fruit so if sugar carb stays under 45 I am real happy. I just looked at MFP and my carbs are usually 100-150 total a day. My diet is sort of zone like 40% carbs, 30% fat and 30% protein. Sometimes the fat is over 40%. It just works out that way. I don't plan it. I just avoid starchy carbs. I eat a lot of chilis, so beans and tomato carbs, and Greek yogurt so I get those carbs too. I also got up to 1300 cals by 4 months out. It has worked real well for me. I lost very steadily and did not stall till month 10 when I got close to onederland. I think minimizing sugar carbs is the key. When I start eating sugar like holidays weight just goes in wrong direction. So then I get back on low sugar plan and it comes back off. -

Anyone feeling dizzy and faint like
playlikeworldchamps replied to nikkib24's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As said befor this is orthostatic hypotension. Your body will adjust after awhile. Just work on getting your fluids in and get up very slowly so your body can adjust to change in position. It will get better over time. Since you had doctor check you out and nothing wrong just be patient and it will get better. Just slow down when changing position. -
Sleevers over 300lbs?
playlikeworldchamps replied to dstined4gr8tnes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can do that especially the younger you are I think. First set goal to be 29.9 BMI that's where all the morbidity/mortality risks are reduced significantly. I am 5-10" and 48yo female who had 4 huge pregnancies 13 to 23 years ago. Then after 29.9 see where you can take it from there - onederland etc. that will all be gravy (er low carb gravy?). That is what I did 208 was 29.9 for me then I shot for Onederland. Took forever it seemed. Now I am shooting for 180s. That is my goal but if I get to 170s I won't cry but I won't cry if I don't either. At 208 I started with personal training to get me to 190s. I just purchased 3 more months of it so get me in the 180s. I am now adding spin and bodypump so I can stay there after my money for the extra training runs out! I purposely saved the more intense exercise for is last push. Up until 208 I was just walking 3 days a week. I didn't want to burn out too soon! Now. I am at gym 4-5 times week plus walking 2 days. -
Sleevers over 300lbs?
playlikeworldchamps replied to dstined4gr8tnes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Actually I am also 5-10 and my personal goal is 187. I started at 315. I am almost there. I am 193 and 13 months out. It gets real slow at the end but I am getting there at rate if 2-4lbs a month in the last 3 months. My doctor did not have goal weight for patients. Anything under 30 BMI is good he says because statistically morbidity/mortality risks about same under 30 as it is under 25. It's when over 30 that jumps significantly. I am around 27.7 now so I meet his goal. -

severe reflux after sleeve
playlikeworldchamps replied to Bodeen's Mom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
all I can say is that two weeks after surgery you will still have a burning/sore feeling on the side. feels like it's inside too. I had that for about 5-6 weeks. after a few days of double Prilosec you will hopefully have less acid. good you made appt by April 14 you will know if Prilosec is working. in meantime avoid irritating drinks or anything with citric acid in it. avoid laying down after eating or drinking and when in bed keep head elevated a bit. eat very very very slowly. you have very little room so you need to be very careful. even water take very tiny sips. -

Gastric Bypass or Sleeve? Need feedback, please!
playlikeworldchamps replied to kpay10's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Weight loss similar for both. If you have diabetes then there is an advantage to bypass because bypassing part of small intestine biochemically alters things and people can be in non diabetic range in only few days after surgery even before losing much weight. If you have addiction to sweets then dumping may be helpful to get you to change your behavior. There is a bit more risk with bypass. But it is still gold standard in WLS with the most research on it for effectiveness long term. Sleeve has been done for a long time for other reasons besides WLS and is somewhat safer. Only past 5 years or so for sole WLS (without the DS part) Sleeve may reduce hunger considerably because of reduced grehlin. However hunger does come back usually. But not as strong. Sleeve is not reversible though could be changes to a bypass. The rest of stomach is discarded and can't be put back though. Sleeve may not be good choice if you have history of GERD. Bypass can be revised by very experienced surgeon since rest of stomach still inside you. Not that you'd provably want to! I had no co morbidites nor diabetes so chose sleeve and have lost 100 lbs in a year. Even though supposedly no dumping I can't eat real sweet stuff like ice cream or I do get a bit if a dumping response. It's not fun. Which is good. I won't eat ice cream anymore at least or more than 1 bite. Maybe you already knew all the differences above. Just choose what's right for you. -
How are things going for those are are at (or near) goal?
playlikeworldchamps replied to Oregondaisy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am a little over a year out and lost over 120 from my highest ever and 101 since surgery. I am 7 pounds from the goal weight I set for myself of 187. I am 5-10 and a normal BMI would be 173 but I was that 25 years ago and I added some to account for age and stretched skin. Lately to get the scale moving I have dedicated myself to be a more regimented eater and am working on eliminating grazing. It seems to be helping. If it helps to speed up loss which is about a pound every other week now perhaps I can get lower than 187. But I am good with the180s. It helps to be tall. I am also working with a personal trainer to improve my lean weight. It was 36% fat in January. Trying to get it down to 30%. I wish I could keep the PT indefinitely but it is pricey. Maybe I will do 3 more months or maybe just try body pump classes etc. I just don't know what to do for strength training without being told. I wonder if there any good apps or videos to truth at are not impossible for a beginner like me! I don't think eating less is the way to get to a final goal. That seems a temporary diet mentality type think where the weight will come back when adding back calories. Sometimes I think maintenance for me will be the same 1300 calories as now but maybe a treat or glass or wine occaissinally. Really don't think I will have problem stopping loss. My body does that quite well if I don't focus one very crumb! Interested to hear how others got the final pounds off and keep them off most importantly. -
Help! Ive gained 10 lbs from goal. :(
playlikeworldchamps replied to amytug's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Don't focus on what you should not have done or what you can't do what you don't want to do Focus on what you WILL do. What do you want and are you willing to do what you need to to get it? You know the basics. You know you need to weigh in and track food. You know you need to move your body. But most of all you can't outrun the fork. Focus on what is going in your mouth. Count every crumb. Be accountable. I want to thank you for coming back here and reaching out to us. That shows your character and strength. It also show us how easy it is to slip up. We are all human. Forget the past. What will you do going forward. That is all that matters. Good luck - you can do it - we believe in you, -
Most definitely. When I got married 25 years ago I was 173 at 5'10" and a size 14 and XL. Now I am 194 and a size 14 and even fit into a size 12 dress pants. Size L tops fit also. At least there are more clothes that fit me now. It was hard to find clothes 24 years ago in size 14. Now I can find a lot in that size. I was actually thinking of trying I my wedding gown to see the difference in sizing. It's the only thing I still have from that long ago to try on. I just don't want to face it. 4 kids since then!

advice wanted: calorie counts and losing last pounds
playlikeworldchamps replied to much2gain's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
1300 not too much for 5-10inch women BMR is 1950 for me and probably up there for OP too. On days I exercise I eat 1500 to 1700 cals. Just my opinion but I don't recommend lowering calories to lose faster. It's only a temporary solution and then maintenance harder. I do recommend tracking every crumb in My Fitness pal to make sure you are actually within whatever calorie limit you need. It sure can creep up if you don't. To get to the finish line I have stopped all the grazing. Keep up the resistance training too. And make sure the protein is 60+ grams and sugar grams are 25-35g at most. Other than that I do not worry about carbs since they are a last in food for me. Though I have more than most people at around 100g a day. A lot are from legumes, beans, nuts etc. -
advice wanted: calorie counts and losing last pounds
playlikeworldchamps replied to much2gain's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
First congrats on your success. You are doing great! I am not a bandster (sleever here) but as I am also down to the last part of weight loss I have recently been working on eliminating grazing. Even though under total cals goal for day (also 1300 for me and I'm also 5-10) I find that if I graze throughout day I struggle to lose. Now I have been working to ensure that there are at least 3 hours between any meal or snack. I eat more at a meal or snack and don't nibble in between. Supposedly this gives body time to burn fat. Evaluate insulin has chance to go back down. If constantly eating (even protein) insulin is released and excess energy gets stored as fat. Also I keep sugar grams as low as possible 25-35 max a day. This seems to be helping me in the past couple weeks to move the scale. I guess I just need a strict regimen and no grazing.
