I'm on purees (weeks 2-4) and as long as I grind it up, I can eat any meats.

Difficulty with water?
johnlatte replied to meford's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
sipping or drinking. If I forget and take a big drink, I'll be wishing that i didn't, but If I sip I'm fine. Also don't drink and eat at the same time. -
I was 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks purees (right now), then 2 weeks soft stuff. Then I think on New Years day I'm free.

Surgery scheduled! Normal to feel like I want to eat like a pig until then?
johnlatte replied to Jenny12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hit a couple of my favorite spots before I had surgery. It's only natural. Dr. didn't make me go on 2 week liquids, said it would just piss me off anyway. -
A lot of it is mental. It will pass. Stick on your protien and your water it gets better.

From start to finish at the hospital?
johnlatte replied to st2011's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yeah I highly recommend it! Dr. told me, I was paying for it, might as well use it up. So I did big time! And see if he'll give you the hydrocodone liquid. About 1 big tablespoon and it is party time! -
From start to finish at the hospital?
johnlatte replied to st2011's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Pretty much the same experience. I showed up, got weighed, the preop nurse was a bit of a ditz but cute so I just went with it. She had a hard time finding someplace for the IV. The anna-man came in an told a couple of jokes, hit me with the juice and off we went. The last thing I remember was turning right out of the preop room. The next thing, I came to in recovery. Didn't feel that bad, had the dilaudid for pain (most just for recreation). Had these pumped up boots on both legs to keep clots down. Got wheeled to the room, slept for a long time. Then the 3rd shift came in and kept me up all night doing things. I walked around, used the bathroom on my own etc. Watched a ton of sportscenter since they kept coming in. Next day did my sip sip sip. Saw the PA and the surgeon. Did a couple of breathing things for the respotherapist. Went home around 5:00p. Slept a lot that day. Had some script hydrocodone liquid (very nice). Just sore from the cuts, but other than that did fine. Had never once spent any time in the hospital, had never had surgery. Only been under twice once for wisdom teeth and once for colonoscopy. You'll be fine -
Recovery time, nausea, and air?
johnlatte replied to Didit12262012's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'll still be fairly sore at 7 days. I am 3 weeks out now and feel pretty good. Just a bit of soreness between the last inscision and the drain area. I haven't been nausea at all, but my Dr. give me a script, that I filled and never used. I am taking nexium for the next 3 months, but have had now heartburn or gas. There is some discomfort right after surgery because the use air to pump up your adominal cavity. If you walk around some in the hospitatl, it will go away. Good Luck! -
I like Premier as it is not as sweet as others like Muscle Milk and Pure Protien. I'm not big on the powders. Used them alot when I was trying to lose weight the old fashioned way. Tried them all, hated them all.

how long does a stall typically last?
johnlatte replied to kc5077's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm having the 3rd week stall as well. Everybody is different, so there's no telling how long the stall will be. the best thing to do is track your carbs, make sure you are getting all of your fluid intake and your protien. If you can start walking longer and faster (amp up the cardio) that will help too. -
It happens, I was sleeved on the 20th. Lost 20lbs the first two weeks, the only a half pound in week 3 as I transitioned to purees. You body is going through some changes and is basically holding on to the fat. Make sure you are getting all your protein and water. Make sure you are getting all your vitamins as well. Start working out if you can, walking at least. it will start back, you just have to get the body to start effectively burning the fat.

I'm 3 weeks out (today). Still a little sore in the area above the navel and between the bottom incision and where my drain was. Its better than it was, but still sore.

I'm in Waxhaw, sleeved 11/20 so far so good

Good luck, your hoops are very similar to what I had to go through as well. Also no liquid diet except the day before surgery. My Dr. said it would just "piss me off" any way (his words).

What Questions Did You Ask Your Surgeon At Consultation?
johnlatte replied to Jenny12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should have a clear understanding of your diet post - op for at least the next 6 weeks. Ask what he wants you to do for nausea and vomiting. Ask how much it is going to hurt and how does he treat pain (hint, liquid hydrocodone ROCKS). Ask if he feels that this will help you get off any co-morb drugs you are currently taking (he better say yes, but ask anyway). Ask him exactly what he does during surgery (whats the exact process). How does he test for a hiatial hernia and what is his choice for a fix. Ask him how many patients he has done this on and how many he has had to re-admit for compilications. What were those complications and how were they resolved. How soon can you resume normal activities, how soon you can start an exercise plan. If he can't give you clear and solid answers for these, you might want to rethink your surgeon... -
Are you getting enough protien? How are your eating habits? Are you eating 4-5 small meals a day and a couple of small snacks. At 5 weeks I think you should be doing just fine. Sounds like you might just need to make a couple of adjustments.

6 Days Post-Op... So Many Questions?
johnlatte replied to Mom2mgaj's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had MML in the hospital and they were too sweet for me. I like the Premier brand best. Like the OP said, that it mostly trial and error to see what you can tolerate. Right now I am still on liquids until Tuesday, but I've had some Soups and they seem to be fine. Just remember a "small" piece of this or that, not a "whole" piece of this or that. I'm using a straw now, but early on it was a no no because of the air it pushed into your newly reformed stomach. -
I was back on the treadmill 6 days after surgery. I'm up to 40 minutes at 3.0mph level 3 5 days a week. I've been on the elliptical trainer, but still had my staples in and was a little sore. Back to the gym tomorrow (13 days out) and I will be on the elliptical, then a round of machines for upper body work and finish with 15-20 minutes back on the treadmill. Not ready for squats or leg lifts, but won't be long.

I Need A Kick In The A** -- Any Takers?
johnlatte replied to Ms. Scarlett's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Think about why you had this surgery. Think about those first few days afterwards. Think about all those times before surgery when you just hated <insert your thought here>. How did you feel? I bet you said "I'd give anything to not be this heavy" Remember that stuff. Get yourself back to the gym. You've come too far, given up to much to just give in. Is what you are doing right now, worth giving up all you have accomplished? You know that as easily as the weight comes off, it will come back if you aren't strong and vigilant. IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT! Now go kick some real ass and be the best you can be! -

First Day Laying On My Stomach.......
johnlatte replied to LHT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As soon as I got my staples out, I was pretty much okay. I'm at 12 days and have no problem sleeping flat on my stomach. -
Hey all, I know that we all struggle with what to eat after surgery. I found this book to be really great. Its called "Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery" You can find it on Amazon. It is written specifically for LabBand, RNY and Switch surgeries but it can be used for sleeves as well. About 6 years ago my wife had RNY and we used a lot. I pulled it out when I got sleeved and we are looking at some really great recipes. You get specific instructions on what to eat during the different stages (puree, soft, normal). All the recipes are high protien, low fat and are very very good. If you look it up on Amazon, you can get some previews of what is in the book. Just passing it along to those, like me that are struggling to find new and creative and healthy things to eat. Especially early on

What are you eating? What are you doing for exercise? Are you getting your water? Have you seen your NUT?
