shakes are awful surgery may 28

Every Dr does something different, but I haven't heard of one that won't recommend RTD shakes. Did they give you a reason? I don't do powders at all and never do anything put the Premier brand of RTDs. IMO Bariatric Advantage isn't one of the better brands, so you might want to think about switching to nectar or really any other one. Go to GNC or Vitamin Shoppe and see if they have samples. You can also get unflavored Protein from unjury (Google it). Isopure comes in bottles and has flavors other than chocolate and vanilla and can be mixed with Powerade zero. In the mean time, when making your shake, put the powder in the cup, put about 1/4 the liquid in it and stir really hard to make a paste. Then add the rest of your liquid. You can also try adding some dry milk powder to it as well. What ever you do don't stop trying. /

    cravings

The only hormone that gets removed partially is the one that causes the feeling of hunger. Cravings are a mental thing. The surgery won't take those a way. The hunger will return as well, for some, the further you out from surgery. The best thing you can do to beat the cravings is eat your dense proteins and eat 5-6 small meals a day. Drink plenty of fluids and exercise. It will take some time for the cravings to get under control.
  3. sugar free powerade, sugar free popcicles, weak tea, crystal light, mio etc. all might help. remember to just sip too.

    Diabetic Sleevers?

I was taking 2000mg metformin and actos for the diabetes. I'm down to 1000 mg metformin and 0 actos. I go see my surgeon's PA tomorrow and hopefully I will be down another 500. My goal is to be drug free by the time my year is out. My sugars rarely get of 100, but in the hospital they were up around 230.

    Super scared.

Okay, so you got off plan. You know it and now lets get it fixed. At 10 weeks you should be somewhere between 600-800 kcals. Are you tracking what you eat? Are you taking a PPI? Gas and acid can appear as hunger when it really isn't so a PPI helps that. Eating things like chips (cheetos) and candy will not give you the restrictive feeling that you get when you eat your protein first then the rest. So..junk the junk food. Start tracking what you eat. Eat your proteins first then anything else. Try to east 5-6 small meals a day, about a 1/3 cup of food total (no 4oz chicken breast). Get your mind on eating healthy. Keep the carbs to a minimum, and knock off the soda. You didn't climb up on the operating table and let them cut out your stomach to fall back on the bad eating habits. Keep in mind that just because you had the surgery, it didn't take away the habits that got us all to where were are. You have to focus and stick to the plan. Call your nutritionist first thing an set up a time, come clean with them and have them chart out a good plan for you. Hang in there and good luck!

    Solids To Early

Take it easy, he only had a bite and did it impulsively. He didn't go out and have a full meal. It is easy sometimes to forget that you have had the surgery. I came in from cutting grass one day and had a huge drink of Water, totally not thinking and was hurting pretty good. It happens...

    Solids To Early

If you aren't hurting, then you probably are okay. Your digestive tract didn't have the surgery. The stomach breaks down food and passes it on.

    Question

I somewhat find this interesting. The sleeve procedure was created for the super obese to get them to the point they could have RNY surgery. Not sure why they would want you to drop that much weight before you had the surgery. I could see having a pre-op diet, but now sure why other wise. Good luck though!
  9. I got a few Finish my masters. Hike at Mt. Rainer (scheduled for this summer) Hike in Alaska (also scheduled) Find my zen again.... Run a 10k or a half with my daughter(s) (okay I will be following her from a distance) Move to Charleston and be an out of work chef/beach bum (working hard at that one) Find true love before I die (sounds like a bad song lyric)

    Does hunger come back?

The areas of the stomach that secrete ghrelin are all over the lining of the stomach and not in one particular spot. While the surgery gets most of it, doesn't get it all, and for a lot of people the hunger does come back after a period of time. Probably the best way to avoid the hungers is to eat protein dense foods and watch the carbs and eat 4-5 times a day (or more). Also if you are drinking with meals, I might suggest that you follow the 15-30 rule (15 before 30 afterwards) or what ever your nutritionist set you up for. Carb heavy or fat heavy foods can go through the sleeve pretty easily and you won't feel the fullness that you need to stop eating. Also there is a fair amount of head hunger that can be involved, if you are a stress or emotional eater, these things can also factor in.
  11. Relax a bit, the surgery itself isn't going to magically make the weight disappear. After 4 days, you still have lots of fluids in you from the surgery. To get that weight to drop, you got to get moving around and go about doing what you can to be really active. Stay hydrated and stay off the scales for a while. It is easy to get impatient, but it will take some time before you see any real type of loss.

    Question?Eating

I have 6 alarms set on my phone. It really helps me remember to eat. I try to get most of my calories in during the first 2 meals of the day, then work downwards from there. I can almost do it now without the alarms, but it helps as a reminder. Sort of Pavlovian, but works for me.

    Does caffeine cause pain?

I don't think it is the caffeine. It could have been the cinnamon, or something in the creamer. Also don't know how much milk you've been drinking but some folks come out of the surgery a little lactose intolerant. Could have been the milk. You might try deconstructing the drink bit by bit to see if you can narrow it down. Maybe use almond or rice milk and leave out the cinnamon one time and see what happens. Most likely down the road you won't have a problem, but at 11 weeks, I could see how something like this might not agree with you.
  14. When you say you don't eat these foods, does that mean that you don't like them or they don't agree? At this stage, those foods do make up several good ways to get in your Protein. You can puree just about anything to make something to eat. I put canned chicken with a little bbq sauce and pureed that. You can put vegetarian chilli in a blender and blend that, but you should strain it afterwards. You can also have cream Soups that have been blended and strained. Unflavored Protein Powder can be added to those. Just a side note, I would not recommend eating baby food. Those foods are manufactured for babies and you can't get the proper nutrition from them. Protein shakes at this stage is also a really great way to get what you need. You may want to open up a little bit and try different types and see if you can find one that you like. Good luck!
  15. hunger will vary between people. Some do not feel hunger at all. Many feel the same type of hunger that they did before surgery. Early in the process, you probably won't feel a lot, if any, hunger, but you will know when it is time to eat. As you move further away from surgery, you will start to feel hunger again (at least a good portion of people do). It won't be this overwhelming feeling that you might have previously experienced, but again, you will know when you need to eat. Also early on, you won't feel a lot of restriction. As your stomach heals from surgery and as you move to more solid foods, you will start to full full more. You will know it is time to put down the fork.

    Oh, the shame.

Hey, crap happens right. We all have our issues that we just have to deal. You know if we trip, we fix it and move on. Nighttime eating is something that i have issues with myself. I try to keep the healthy stuff out and around just for the night time munchies. I checked out your pictures, you've done a tremendous job with your weightloss. Don't kick yourself over it, just learn, deal and fix. You've got a good plan above. Hang in, and stay the course.

    Post VSG and 3-D movies?

Actually it is an interesting question. Motion sickness starts in the inner ear in the vestibular system. It has been documented that certain films can cause motion sickness, but most of these are IMAX types of movies and not necessarily 3-D. Keeping that in mind, I would think that if you aren't having motion sickness now , you won't with the sleeve. If you are having those issues before the sleeve, then I don't think it will be any more severe.

    "No go" foods

I know that it is hard, but keep trying. Most foods should be okay for the most part. I love Morningstars, and eat them pretty much every week. The only food that i ever had a problem with is eggs and that went away within a few months. Also seven weeks might be a bit soon to eat a lot of dense vegetables like eggplant and asparagus. I think over time, it will get better. Hang in there.
  19. Very good points. I've cut my HBP meds in half, as well as my diabetes meds. I've already eliminated my medicine for cholesterol. I'm doing so in a very careful deliberate manner with my PCP. on board This also shows the need to make sure your Dr is involved with your ongoing recovery process, if you are on the meds. My goal by my one year anniversary is to be drug free. It was the biggest reason for me to have the surgery.

    Need an Idea! Help!

big salad with some baby spinach, red cabbage, cucumber, grape tomatoes and some fresh mozzarella. Make a dressing for the side of balsamic and you are good to go. Easy peasy and it is healthy and a good thing to have for an outside party.

    Food cravings/obsession

unfortunately the surgery is on your stomach and not on your head. A lot of people still have cravings and have a hard time reconciling their relationship with food and eating. This is the hard part related to the surgery. It won't end the bad habits or the cravings. That is something that you have to work through on your own. The sleeve does make it easier to work through, and that's the biggest plus, but you still have to work through it. you may not feel hunger early on, or you may not have cravings, but as time goes by, the feelings return.. Maybe not as intense but you'll get them. it will be up to you how to handle that. Good luck!!

    Really discouraged!

Chin up and congratulations on your loss! Your body starts to clue in that it is getting a whole lot less fuel that it has in the past. It does everything possible to hold on to that fuel (fat) for as long as possible. This slows down the weight loss and is known as a stall. Stalls happen....It is our bodies way of getting back at us for robbing it of all that juicy goodness it was getting before we decided to take charge. Couple things you can try, but realistically everybody reacts differently. You can try more protein and less carbs, more water and more exercise. The real key is to make sure you are eating nutritionally balanced food. I wouldn't suggest going back to liquids, but I would suggest you get your calories in as much as possible. Depending on what your nutritionist recommends, you should be somewhere around 800 or so Kcals as day. Make sure you are getting that in. it can be hard, it is something that I struggle with at almost 6 months, but it is what will get you back on track. Hang in there, it will happen.

    eating bread!

I pretty much eat what I need to eat without a lot of problems. I don't eat breads, rice or pastas simply because the white processed foods are really not good for me health wise. I tend to eat red met only about 1 time a week but have had a good steak and it is fine. It is a pretty dense protein, so most likely that's why your Dr. said no. As you get further out from surgery, you should be able to add both back in, but I would do what you can, to follow the plan. It does make your recover easier and makes allow the weight you want to lose come off a bit sooner.
