Not getting enough protein or liquids in
May142013 replied to jandrfprever32's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I really like the Premier Protein ready made shakes. I buy them at Costco. There are 30g of protein in just 11 oz, so was able to handle them early on. They have been my saving grace! I also sucked on SF popcocles and crushed ice in the early days after surgery to stay hydrated. -
I'll have to try Central Market next time I'm in Dallas. I guess Waxahachie HEB just isn't up with the latest and greatest, though it is an awesome store!

Feel good still weak
May142013 replied to tinahall's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My NUT told me to add Apple Juice to my water, puréed fruit to my yogurts and cottage cheese, and drink skim milk if I can tolerate dairy. She also suggested a little Cream of Wheat for breakfast. I carefully log everything into Fitness Pal, so she can clearly see my intake each day. This isn't a license to go carb crazy....we all know that's one of the things that got us here. She just suggested trying to get 50 g during this healing phase. At 15-20 carbs a day, I wasn't getting enough to give me the energy I needed to feel better. -
I'm sixteen days out and still can't sleep on my stomach. As you can see from this thread, everyones journey is different!

Feel good still weak
May142013 replied to tinahall's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone! I'm 16 days out and was so weak that I could barely function. The doc just told me to be patient, that some people just take longer to heal. Well, today I had an appointment with my NUT and she knew the problem as soon as she saw my food logs. I was so focused on getting my protein and liquids in, that I was not getting enough carbs to give me energy. She said that this was probably the only time I would hear this from her EVER, but told me into increase my carbs. She suggested I try to hit 50 grams a day and said I would notice a huge change. She made me eat a graham cracker and drink a cup of skim milk before heading home, because I was so shaky. The differnce in how I feel tonight is unreal! I have energy again! I was so obsessed with drinking a low (no) carb protein drink, that I was only getting 15-20 carbs a day. So.....just some food for thought for those of you who are weak after surgery. -
I combed every inch of HEB for these today and no luck! I asked the manager and he said he never heard of them.

Does your sleeve have a name?
May142013 replied to Indigo1991's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I decided not to name my sleeve because it is a permanent part of my body, not some foreign visitor. I did name my Lapband. Her name was Sybil because she had multiple personalities. I'm very happy that Sybil is long gone and I no longer have a foreign bject in my body that needs constant babysitting! -

It is none of their business and you do not have to tell them anything, per the Medical Leave Act. My boss knows I had surgery, but no other details other than I would be out a week (which has now turned into two). One of my employees asked what type of surgery I was having and I told her it was personal and left it at that. It's none of their business!

why do we not drink during meals?
May142013 replied to Success2013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The liquid will wash the food through your new small tummy. You want it to stay full and satisfying when you eat solid food, so no drinking with meals! -

I had surgery on the 14th and still struggling with pain in my right side and NO energy! I can get past the bad taste in my mouth and the sensitivity to smell. I just want my energy back and want to be pain free! I'm so ready to go back to normal activities. I'm still off work....noway can I go back in this shape! -
I slept on my side last night
May142013 replied to heatwhip's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's so interesting to read the differences in pain level with this surgery. I'm 2 weeks post op today and still have pain on my lower right side. My incision there looks great and isn't sore, it's a deep down inside pain. I still can't sleep on my side and haven't even attempted my stomach. I also can't stand pants on my waist....either have to fold them down or wear a dress. My energy is zip! This has been a tough surgery for me for some reason. I had a very easy recovery from gallbladder surgery, Lapband, and hysterectomy. Go figure! -

Happy Saturday! Does anyone have tips for regaining strength? I'm 11 days post op and so incredibly weak! My husband and I went out for our morning walk this morning and I got so clammy and felt incredibly faint after just a quarter mile. I know I have to push myself, but wow...it's tough to get strength back when I can seem to do so little. I'm doing well getting fluids down, but the protein drinks do not go down well because they make me so nauseous! Maybe the energy will come when I get to start mushies next week? I can't imagine going back to work on Tuesday with this little strength! Any other suggestions?

I've read a wide variety of responses regarding pain. I expected a easy recovery because 1) I have a very high tolerance for pain, 2) I've had multiple surgeries and always pop back really fast, and 3) I'm a rule follower and did everything the doctor said to do before and after. Well, SURPRISE...I had a lot of pain and had to take pain meds the first week home. I'm 11 days out now and finally feeling better, but still really week. I planned to go back to work after one week, and haven't been a ble to go back yet. Every surgery, every surgeon and every person are different. The important thing......it's worth every pain and every moment of this recovery to get to my goal of becoming healthy again!

Need help-yesterday was drinking fine, today can barely sip!
May142013 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm just miserable today....nauseated and can barely sip. I've felt like I could throw up at any minute all day long. I'm 8 days post op and was doing fine just yesterday! I was able to sip on protein drinks, sip creamed soup, and eat a few bites of pudding. I have felt so sick since I woke up this morning. I already had to have IV fluids early on, so do not want to get dehydrated. I'm sucking on crushed ice at the moment since sipping is so difficult. -

I'm actually back to feeling good today. I have NO IDEA why I felt so horrible yesterday. I was totally miserable the entire day....vey nauseated, had the chills, dizzy and felt so faint. I could hardly walk to the bathroom. My husband checked my blood pressure, pulse, and temp all throughout the day and night, and was pushing me to sip every 15 minutes. I know he was very concerned (he's a paramedic, so doesn't easily worry since he's seen and done it all). He was on the phone with my doc a couple of times, so am thankful that his knowledge kept me from a trip to the ER. Today is a new day! I've went to get my nails done this morning and we are doing to going to go to movies tonight if I'm still feeling good. What a difference a day makes! -
