  1. I was offered surgery on 12/24 but declined it. I say it's because I want to be able to celebrate with my grand kids but I think a bigger part of it is not wanting to be on liquids during the holidays. I'm fine with portion control, but the liquid diet? And just having surgery? Oh no. Maybe that's a little selfish but I just couldn't wrap my brain around having surgery during holidays. I hope you guys get thru this. The holidays will be over soon and you can just concentrate on that beautiful body you will have by the next holiday season. Good luck!
  2. I'm kind of stressing out about the whole phosphorus deficiency issue. They have drummed it into me how easy it is to become deficient so I've been looking into ways to get what I need. Unfortunately the vitamins that contain a good amount of phosphorus are calcium chewies which would be great but it comes as tricalcium phosphate which the calcium is poorly absorbed so I would have to take them just for the phosphorus and take additional calcium citrate. Is there any other supplement which contains over 200mg phosphate without adding in vitamins that I don't need?

    Kaiser Northern Ca?

They want you to bring your support person to any appt except the psychologist appt. you gotta do that one alone. I'm taking my daughter 18 yrs old) to my pre op class tomorrow cause she is a mother hen and will take care of me after surgery. Plus she's smart and I thought she would understand the restrictions better than my hubby.

    Kaiser Northern Ca?

They do orientations on Sunday? Hope all goes well! I was given a surgery date for the 24th but turned it down. As much as I want to get to the operating table, I don't want to miss Christmas with my grand kids. I think I can last till the 9th.

    New here

It's so great to see younger folks making the decision to change your lives for the better. My middle daughter is 22 and weighs about 270. I tried to convince her to take this journey with me but she refused. She's also always been heavy. The only one out of 5 kids. I just hope I do really well and can at some point inspire her to also get this surgery done. I'm so proud of you guys! Good luck in your surgery!

    Tomorrow

Good luck to both of you! I wish I had answers for you, but I'm still pre surg too. I think in both cases though its going to be different for everybody. I know plenty of people who drink after but not nearly as much.
  7. My doc said about 50% of sleevers will have worse reflux after surgery and tried to talk me into bypass because I currently take Pepcid. I told him I believe weight loss in itself will help my heartburn (and it has) and I'm willing to risk it because I really don't want bypass. My endoscopy showed no Barrett's esophagus or any other damage from reflux so I'm comfortable in my choice. Do meds not work to control your symptoms after surgery? It seems a little drastic to me, to have additional wls just because of reflux.

    Must.Stop.Weighing.Myself.

I'm pre op and weigh myself every morning at home then I drink 16oz water on my way to work, wait for that to 'work its way thru' then weigh myself at work (I'm in a hospital so have accurate scales) before I eat breakfast. I actually hate the weekend cause it means 2 days without stepping on my at work scale. I can't imagine how obsessed I'm going to be after surgery!

When to go back to work?

I'm so glad to hear many people are going back to work pretty quickly. I am planning on going back at 2 weeks out. I have been told they will allow me to just work at my desk while I continue to recooperate. I'm in the medical profession as well, and split time between procedures and desk work. I really don't want to stay home for a long time. I find I'm much more disciplined when I'm there so I think it will help me in the long run.

    Things I won't miss

Having a hard time shaving in the shower. Hard to keep my leg up on the wall. By the way, why can't shower designers just include a little footrest in one corner???? I swear it would be the handiest thing!

    January 2013 Sleevers?

That's awesome! I wanted to lose 45 before surgery but my loss has slowed to a crawl. I'm at about 33lbs down with what, 3 weeks to go? And let's not forget Christmas glaring its ugly head at me lol. I'm making tamales on Christmas Eve. That's gonna be a killer. My date is jan 9th by the way.

    Kaiser Northern Ca?

I'm going to south sac kaiser and absolutely love them. Originally went to Richmond about 5 yrs ago but there was just no follow thru on their end. Just a class, here's your diet. Call us when you're done. Ssc keeps me engaged and moving along. I had to attend a class with health Ed then another class with the bariatric clinic, where I met my surgeon. After class they had openings so I met my surgeon in consultation that same day. Then a nutrition class, psych eval, visit with the rn, all completed. I'm scheduled for my pre op class next wed , final meeting with my surgeon on jan 2 and getting sleeved jan 9. It's been a really easy process and the ssc staff is great. My surgeon is dr grinberg.

Why Are Tea/coffee Taboo Post Surgery ?

Caffeine can also cause more acid production and can also cause ulcers at the anastamosis, so better not to drink any coffee/tea except decaf for a while until your sleeve is fully healed at least.

OMG! I HAVE SO SCREWED UP!

You must be like me. A horrible liar. If I have to lie about something, unless I think it through and practice what I'm gonna say I would also get a flustered. I have not made a secret of my surgery. And in fact it's even posted on fb. I have friends in many locations who have had some sort of wls and its nice to have their support. Surprisingly the worst, most judgmental people I've had to deal with are some of the doctors I work with. So ok I can kind of understand cause I work in gastroenterology so we see all the folks who have problems after their surgery or years down the road when they decide to stop taking their iron and become anemic (take your darned iron folks!) but still I think they should keep their negativity to themselves. I can't imagine the stress of keeping this journey to yourself though. The pp's are right it's nice to have at least a few allies at work. Hope it all works out for you. Let us know please what you decided to do.

    Shorties...

I'm 5'3.5" and started at 268.6 lbs. in the last 6 weeks I have lost 31 lbs and I'm getting sleeved on jan 9. My coworker who was sleeved a few months ago told me to expect my weight loss to stall out for a while after surgery which I'm going to hate. Every day I stand on the scale and tell myself that's the last time I will ever see this weight again. Say goodbye to 240, etc. not having that little victory party is going to be hard after surgery so I hope the weight loss picks up again not too long afterwards. Oh and all these looonnngggg pre op diets? What's up? I have 2 days. First day full liquid and second day clear liquid. If the intent is just to make sure you are cleaned out why is everybody on such long drawn out pre ops??
  18. I'm hoping after surgery I have diarrhea like 2 of my friends, really. Since I started on my bariatric diet I'm only going once or twice a week. Way way less volume than before too. I have never gone more than a day without going. Now I'm hearing I might have the same issue after surgery? Oh no. I'm gonna be asking for a stool softener very soon. Thanks for the info.
  19. Beautiful! I only hope I look half as good as you after my surgery!
  20. That's too bad your family doesn't support you. Must make it hard. I I hope you have friends or even a support group to help you through. I've been pretty lucky. My hubby supports my decision. He is worried though and sometimes will tell me maybe I don't need the surgery because I'm doing an awesome job at losing weight (30lbs in 6 weeks). And I have to remind him of the other times I've lost weight in the past. He mentioned eating out last night.we were at a Christmas party and neither of us finished our plates. I told him we will be able to order one dinner and an extra plate! Just think how much money we will save lol.
  21. I used to love roller coasters but once I got fat all I could think is forward motion and my weight was gonna derail that car, so I stopped going. Now I have a 5 yr old grandson and I an soooo looking forward to taking him to the fair next year. And not having to push that danged bar into my fat to get it to close.

    January 2013 Sleevers?

My program holds me accountable for every pound I lose so I can't afford to fall into that trap. My goal was to lose 13lbs. I've lost 31. But even though I was only required to lose 13, since my recorded loss is now 31 I can't gain any of that back or surgery is cancelled. Is that not the same everywhere?
