    How do you sip?!

I agree. Your body will give you negative feedback if you eat or drink too fast. I used the little 2 tbsp medicine cups at first. Then I used my kids old sippie cups for shakes for awhile.

    All of my December sleevers...

I'll be 6 weeks tomorrow. Down 30 lbs. I'm still struggling to get all my water in. I'm supposed to wait 45 min after eating to drink but in reality it takes about 2 hours before I can drink.

    Urgent care

Fyre I hope you are feeling better. If I were you I would also follow up with your surgeon or pcp. My husband had a similar episode 4 months post op and it turned out to be kidney stones. They didn't show up on ultrasound. It took 5 or 6 days to pass one. Turns out he had a second one two days later. I have heard that kidney stones are more common post sleeve because they are more common with dehydration and a lot of us have trouble getting all our water in.

    Sleeve Vs Bypass

I think that success of any procedure is based on lifestyle change. The advantage to the sleeve is that the ghrelin producing part of the stomach is removed. I am honestly never hungry and have to plan how to get my Protein in. The other advantage is that the pylorus is left intact. This is the valve that empties food from the stomach into the small intestine. With bypass, your new stomach pouch is attached further down the intestines. There is no true valve anymore and people can learn to eat enough that it fills their stomach pouch and pushes down into the intestines without resistance. The sleevers pylorus makes it much harder to overfill - we are more likely to regurgitate.

  6. My sharp pains only lasted a few days.
  7. This is common for the largest incision where the surgeon removes your stomach. A larger part of the muscle has to be cut than the smaller ports for the laparoscopic instruments. It happened to me too. I found putting ice on it worked better than pain meds for me. I iced it 10 minutes every hour until it felt better.

Panera Hidden Menu is Protein WOW

Thanks. This is good to know. We order from Panera for staff meetings. Now I know what I can get.
  9. I'm 5 weeks out and on soft foods. When I am close to full, I hiccup. This happened even if I drank liquids too fast. One mouthful past the hiccup is uncomfortable even with soft foods like yogurt. As you progress, listen to your body. Each stage and part of the healing process is different and varies among individuals. Also men's and women's stomachs are shaped a little different too. My husband had surgery 6 months ago and he had different food experiences than me. He was able to drink all his water. I'm still working in it.
  10. I brought my own pajamas. I wore the long pants the first time I walked the halls. When they temporarily disconnected my iv to take a shower, I put my own top on too. I made the mistake of bringing a knitting project because I find it relaxing. It must have been the drugs because the blanket I was knitting is full of mistakes. It will be a funny reminder if the "old" me.
  11. I am 5 weeks out and my husband is 6 months out. He will order the "lunch" size if they have it available. Our doctor's office gave us a business card that states we have had a surgical procedure requiring small meals and would they extend the courtesy of allowing us to order off the lunch menu or kids' menu. So far, no problem. He does bring a lot home too. As far as drinking he is physically capable of eating and drinking at the same time. The reason you need to wait to drink is not just volume. It also flushes the food out your sleeve faster. Then you don't feel full and can eat more. So on occasion probably okay but not a habit you want to get in to. At 5 weeks, I still have the volume issue. I can't get all my liquids and Protein in everyday but some are better than others.
  12. Call your nutritionist. She can tell you if you are actually getting any protein from the bean juice. She can also give you other ideas. Maybe you will be allowed to make a Greek yogurt smoothie diluted with fat free milk. Personally the nectar chocolate truffle saved me. I mixed with only 6 oz milk and one scoop. That is 30g protein. I had two per day and got my liquids in. That is all I could tolerate.

    BC BS MICHIGAN

I had to wait the full 6 months but didn't have comorbidities. You could call the insurance company directly or have the surgeons office check. It would be common sense to only have one surgery but then the 6 month thing is pretty arbitrary too. Like I had never tried to lose weight for 6 months before

    Getting off track

It is actually all in your head-your brain to be exact. Sometimes the body confuses needing sleep and needing food. You are really craving some zzzzz's but your brain thinks it is a carbohydrate craving. Get some sleep and drink plenty of fluids and you will get back on track.

    I Need "Soft Food" Ideas!

On soft and puréed foods, my doctor allows their crunchy protein supplements including Kay's. naturals protein pretzel sticks as long as chewed to mush. You could dip something like that with doctor approval. I had enough of them preop to never want them again.

    I Need "Soft Food" Ideas!

I like a few spoonfuls of refried beans, salsa, a spoonful of Greek yogurt (or low fat sour cream). I heat the beans slightly and mix the rest together until smooth. Sometimes I add a little tostitos cheese dip. Even without chips, I feel like I'm having Mexican for dinner

    Turkey "Meatball" Squares

    This was fantastic!
  18. Keep your pain under control. Get meds for nausea if needed too. Walk as much as possible. My blood pressure was up only when I let myself get painful.
  19. I was also told soy milk or lactose free fat free milk for at least 2 weeks and sometimes longer. Apparently some people are lactose intolerant post op

    Cramps/sour Stomach

Lana don't wait until Wed if things aren't improving or you are dehydrated. Do you know which local hospital does most of the bariatric surgeries? The ER doctor will often consult one of them if it is related. But there are many non Gastrointestinal reasons for vomiting including pancreatitis, kidney disease, diabetes, and liver issues to name a few. You may need to go to get hydrated and basic bloodwork started. Then when you go to your appointment Wed the doctor will know more. Otherwise it will be a consultation and off for bloodwork and X-rays before he/she can tell you what he/she thinks it is. I believe in not having regrets. Don't regret not seeking treatment sooner.

    Post-Op since December 27, 2012

I'm glad you found this site for advise. You should gradually increase the volume you consume. Sip almost constantly. My doctor gave me guidelines too but said it may take up to a week to be reaching all my protein goals. I did find that the swelling was down enough in about a week to meet my protein goals. But I'm 2 weeks today and too full from protein shakes to finish all my water. I have only been able to get about 6 glasses in. Still working on it. It is a learning curve ....
  22. Hopefully your tests will shed some light on why you still have such bad reflux. You may have a hiatal hernia and this contributes to reflux significantly. I had one and didn't know it. It was fixed at my sleeve surgery two weeks ago. It is when the hole in your diaphragm that lets your esophagus go through to attach to your stomach is too big. If not repaired, your sleeve is now narrow enough that part of your stomach can move up into your chest. If this is what is causing it, the good news is that it can be fixed.

trying to figure it all out

I had my surgery on the 17 th too and have lost 7 lbs. it did not come off in the first few days. Only now that I am more active. I am having the same problem with palatability. Talked to nutritionist today and she said I could have any creamed soup if I blend it. I'm looking to try that tomorrow and add milk for protein. So I can get about 60 G protein from two shakes a day of Nectar chocolate truffle which is bearable. Then hopefully some variety from creamed soups.

    Pain...

You could also try ice packs. Use for 10 minutes every hour.
  25. As for the uvula, mine was sore post op I think from snoring when I sleep on my back. Now that I can sleep on my side it has resolved. Maybe ask your doctor about using a throat spray. Fevers are always worrisome. Be your own advocate and request a white blood cell count if you are still feverish tomorrow. I have been feeling better each day but still need the Lortab. Last night one of my incisions hurt like a hot poker in certain positions. Finally had to apply ice to get comfortable enough to sleep. Had first BM today. Watery diarrhea with some cramping. Glad I didn't have to take anything to make it happen since I was starting to get concerned. Swallowing much easier today too. Love the nectar chocolate Truffle. I make it with Lacoste free fat free milk. Had 3 yesterday which was 93g of Protein. Today my husband is making homemade chicken Soup and reserving some of the broth for me. Can't wait for more flavor in my liquids
