60% loss of excess weight?
kscdvm replied to SleeveBeliever's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Your ideal weight would give you a BMI of 25 or less. There are lots of free online BMI calculators. Also ask your doctor. Some feel that maintaining a BMI of less than 25 is an unrealistic goal so will give you a better idea. The statistic of 60% is usually that this amount of weight loss can be attributed to the surgery alone. Obviously those that exercise and follow the life style change will have better than average results. -
4 months out and never hungry. They remove the part of the stomach that makes ghrelin. This is the hormone that tells your brain you are hungry. I always envied people that had to remember to eat instead of having food be always present in their thoughts. Now I am one of those people. It's okay most of the time but sometimes eating is a chore.

Anyone else suffering with cramp ?
kscdvm replied to pandashazz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 4 months out now but did have cramps in calves and toes at about 6 weeks. Not sure of the cause but it only lasted a few weeks. Stay hydrated and ask your doctor about your electrolytes. Sometimes it's a potassium deficiency. -

nine months post op and living life!
kscdvm replied to Fiddleman's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Always a good idea to get it checked out but don't be surprised if it is your new normal. Six years ago, I lost 90 lbs and was doing sprint distance triathlons. (Of course when I got injured I gained it back and then some....) Anyway. I ended up feeling a little faint. Went to family doctor with heart rate between 40 and 50. Had to wear a holter monitor for 24 hours. My sleeping heart rate was 25 but the cardiologist said it was normal for an aerobicly fit person. -

I had surgery 12/17 Highest weight 254 12/4 started preop diet 244 12/17 surgery 234 Current weight 196 Slow but consistent loser. Only one short stall so far. -
There are several good cookbooks I got at the library for eating after weight loss surgery. Have your family go through one and pick out some recipes that you might want to try. I have found that I really like ground turkey now and can't really stomach much beef. We almost always have some chili on hand made with turkey that is an easy dinner to heat up just the right portion for those that show up for dinner. (My kids are in a lot of sports).

All of my December sleevers...

Not a rapid loser but slow and steady. I average about 2 lbs a week now. Hit onederland today! Met with the nutritionist and PA yesterday. She increased my calories from 800 to 1000. Sounds great but I still have a hard time getting it all in and drinking all my water. She suggested adding a shake as an evening snack to bump my calories and liquid. Apparently I am blessed with a really small sleeve. I almost have an aversion to food. She assured me that many people feel this way at 3 months but most are out of this phase by 6 months. So take advantage of it now while eating is a chore. -

Highest weight 254 12/4 started preop diet 244 12/17 surgery 234 Current weight 204 I'm in a stall but okay with it. At least I'm not gaining and food doesn't control my life in the way it did. I actually finding it difficult to find anything that I enjoy eating. Greek yogurt is the only thing that doesn't make me feel uncomfortable. But I really don't enjoy eating anymore. It is more of a check mark on my to do list. I wonder if that will change. -

Should have taken my own advice. My husband made me scrambled eggs for dinner and he put a piece of toast on the side. I ate it last and thought it would be okay since it was toasted. I ate about 3 bites and then started sliming. Threw up a little but not all of it. I think the bread was acting as a stopper and I would probably have felt better if I could have gotten it all up. I'll probably wait another month to try again

I am 3 months out and still no room for bread. I can only seem to eat carbs if they are crunchy like a few wheat thins. I have started making chicken salad or tuna salad for lunch and can eat it on half a sandwich thin that has been toasted to a crisp.

I think sleeve was more painful but it could also be that you feel less pain holding your new baby too. Of course my c section was 19 years ago and I don't heal as fast in my 40's..........

Having second thoughts!
kscdvm replied to jenniferg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband had his surgery before me since he had comorbidities and I had to do the six month plan. After a couple of months I saw what he was going through and thought I was doing well losing weight and maybe I didn't need the surgery. I came to realize that I was kidding myself. I've lost 90 lbs on my own before but couldn't maintain a lifestyle of eating only 1000 calories a day and exercising a couple of hours daily. Trigger foods would make me want to throw in the towel and start over the next day. My next day didn't come and I gained the weight back and then some. When my husband was almost 6 months out, I had my surgery. He had lost 100 lbs and can eat almost anything but in small portions. I knew that surgery was the best chance I would have to free myself from the hold food had on me. Now I am one of those people that is never hungry and I actually have to make an effort to get all my protein in. It is such a relief both physically and emotionally. -
Another question...because I seem to have a never ending supply of them
kscdvm replied to roiansmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband had the same thing and it was a kidney stone. It took him a week to pass it. He went to the ER of the hospital where we had surgery. They said kidney stones are more common when you are dehydrated which a lot of us are in the first 6 months. His did not show up on ultrasound either. But....he did have some blood microscopically in his urine. Can they prescribe something for the pain? -

I had my first stall last week. Tuesday was "fat Tuesday" so I had a Paczki (poonchki). For those of you that don't know, this is a jelly or creamed filled donut eaten before Lent. Traditional ones are made with prunes to clean you out I guess. Anyway I had a cream filled one. Didn't feel great that night. I had a little heartburn. It was my highest calorie day since surgery at 1100. But.... I lost 3 lbs this week! So I guess the extra calories jump started things a little. Back to my usual 800 calories. -

All of my December sleevers...
kscdvm replied to blkdiamond377's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved 12/17. Down 33 lbs. still losing 1.5 to 2 lbs per week. No stall yet but I also only weigh myself once weekly to keep from going crazy. I eat about 800 cal per day and 60 to 70 grams of protein. Still having trouble getting all my water in. Last night went to Zumba and easily drank a water bottle over the hour long class. I guess more exercise is the solution. I had a couple days where I felt hungry. I had discontinued my Prilosec at my 6 week post op visit. I had a hungry feeling and a couple of wake me up in the middle of the night heartburn episodes. So I started taking it again. Amazing no more nightly episodes and no hunger. -

Just had my 6 week check up last week. My doctor and nut are not concerned with rate of loss. Sleeved 12/17 and down 30 lbs. They want me to get 60 g of protein and 64 oz of water. I asked what to expect in lbs lost per week. They said it was so variable that they don't predict other than to say that by 6 months it is usually 60 to 80 lbs. Sounds good to me! -
BMI 41 no comorbids...what are the odds?
kscdvm replied to Emilee68's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in Michigan and have BCBS. My Bmi was 41 but no comorbidities. I had to do a 6 month weight loss program supervised by one of the bariatric doctors, meet with behaviorist, nut, and exercise physiologist. I'm 7 weeks out now. It was worth the wait.
