I sure hope so! I need to lose 215 from my highest weight... I know the next hundred will come off slower than the first hundred.. but I'm patient. It's a lot easier for me to be patient now that I'm sleeved and feeling satisfied with the amount of food I'm eating.. before my sleeve surgery, I was SO impatient with weight loss because it was so much torture to be eating such low calories and then not see the scale move.. Now, I'm like "eh, if it doesn't move this week, It will move eventually"..... and it always does!

Are chicken bouillon cubes okay if I can't find Kosher chicken broth?
SerendipityHappens replied to MumtazG38's topic in Food and Nutrition
OK, well if you don't want the frozen stock, then I think it's worth the trip down to Dearborn to get yourself some broth... seriously, broth saved me in those early days when I was sick of all the sweet drinks, and Maggi cubes are "ok"... but the broth is so much nicer!... And pick up some halal gelatin if you don't already have some.... just steer clear of Shatilla's bakery! -

SerendipityHappens replied to MumtazG38's topic in Food and Nutrition
The cubes don't add the nutrition that the "real" broth has, but honestly, it's such a short time and you'll be taking a Vitamin anyway so I don't see the harm if there is no alternative....though, I will tell you.. I had the same doctor as you (they're AWESOME by the way) and when I was discharged, he was very clear that I should use REAL chicken stock and not the cubes...Dr's cabrera/valenzuela keep you on Clear liquids for a full week after surgery. One thing.. I know you mentioned that making your own is not an option... but you CAN make in one huge batch and then cook it down and freeze the stock into cubes then transfer to a ziploc freezer bag. You can make ONCE and then enjoy homemade stock cubes for WEEKS.. just pop one out add Water and microwave! Good luck with your surgery. -
I was told strictly rest for two weeks (only frequent brief walks to prevent DVT) and then after that walking only for six weeks. I was recovering fairly quickly but my surgeon was very serious about this point so that's what I did. I'm two and a half months out now and walking 4-5 miles a day... and just started TRYING to do C25K..(which is WAY beyond my abilities by the way)

Do your feet really shrink?
SerendipityHappens replied to memk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
100 pounds down and my feet are still the same length...I've been wearing a size 10 since 6th grade so I don't think they'll get shorter at this point! My feet are a bit narrower and my instep is not as full so I can more easily fit into shoes... I used to be a "wide" width in many shoes.. I went to the shoe store last week to get fitted for some new athletic shoes.... and he came out with a MEDIUM WIDTH!!!! After I bought the shoes, I wandered over to the Dansko section and tried on a pair of danskos in medium width and they fit perfectly.... SO AWESOME because in the past, I was limited to only the plain shoes because those were the only ones that were offered in wide.. But now I can wear any cute pattern I want... I ordered a patent leather floral design... YAY for NSVs! -
Gluten/Wheat allergy Celiac disease
SerendipityHappens replied to Carol Watts's topic in Food and Nutrition
Discovering I am wheat intolerant has been a blessing in disguise. (I am wheat intolerant but not GLUTEN intolerant.. I DON'T have celiacs and I can have other grains containing gluten.. weird huh?) Cutting out the wheat has left SO MUCH room for so many more nutritious foods! Now for someone who is Celiac, it's a bit more complicated since you have to be careful of even the tiny amount of gluten sneaking in .. you'll have to learn to read labels all over again, and be careful of cross-contamination, etc... My recommendation would be not to fall into the trap of buying a bunch of "gluten free" processed foods and rely on them for your daily intake. They're typically very high in sugars and they're very refined (potato starch, rice starch, tapioca starch) Fine for a treat, but maybe not high in nutritive value. There are MANY resources out there now for learning to eat wheat free or gluten free (NOT the same thing by the way) I would recommend joining an online community for celiacs so that you can really learn how to get a handle on it. -
Drain site, no stitches?
SerendipityHappens replied to Ah0505's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine closed by the next morning when I woke up, but the doctor told me it could take a few days. Just follow doctors instructions.. my instructions were the same as yours and no issues at all! -
"Quality Carbs" definition and examples please
SerendipityHappens replied to takingbackcontrol's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me it means full-fat dairy, non-starchy vegetables and low glycemic fruits and berries... also perhaps a small amount of legumes and starchy vegetables. I don't consider Cereal grains, whole grain or not to be quality carbs.. just too many carbohydrates and not enough micronutrients.. and the nutrients that they DO offer, can very easily be had from a less carb dense source. This is just my PERSONAL view.. You'll probably get many different answers and I doubt any of them will be wrong. -
Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?
SerendipityHappens replied to *Dean*'s topic in Fitness & Exercise
WHAAAA? I'm doing the WRONG program, mine is run 60 seconds walk 90 seconds.. repeat EIGHT times. I just got back from attempt number 3 and I was able to do FOUR repetitions. I did two repetitions then walked through the next minute run, then did one more and walked for the next one and then one more and then walked the rest. My total time running was only four minutes.. but then again I'm only 5'5" and I still weight 259 pounds so I'm hauling a hundred extra pounds on my small frame. OH and to all you frady cats out there.. I went out in a form fitting TANK TOP and my lightweight cellulite and pannus enhancing bottoms....and did this in a very popular public area and I didn't die of humiliation. -
I use real half and half in my coffee.. I eat real pork bacon.. I eat at least half an avocado a day. I make buffalo sauce with real butter.. I make full fat yogurt.. I eat the chicken skin. I eat a LOT of fat.. today I am on schedule to consume 72 fat grams. BUT I also only net 20 carbs or less a day so it balances things out. I'm at 800-1050 calories a day with 70-80 grams of Protein, no more than 20 net grams of carbs and the rest from FAT. I tried the diet foods route but I find that using real full-fat foods and limiting my CARBS works better for me. Also, my blood lipids are abnormally low.. go figure.

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?
SerendipityHappens replied to *Dean*'s topic in Fitness & Exercise
I did week 1 day 1 (again) today. I made it less than half way through and had to walk the rest.. Just going to keep repeating the day until I can do it and then move on from there.... I'm sure it doesn't help that I'm still 259 pounds at only 5'5"! Frankly I'm surprised I could even run for an entire minute! -
The easy route
SerendipityHappens replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Note to Surgeon: So people are better off not having the surgery even though it's statistically proven that Morbidly obese people have an exponentially greater success with WLS than without it? If what you say is true, then why do MORE ,more morbidly obese people regain weight after losing it "the natural way" than those who lose with the assistance of WLS? to your friend: Congratulations! Losing 45 pounds is a great accomplishment! Now that you've also committed to a healthier lifestyle, we can go workout together once I'm well! For everyone else: I don't want or need your approval. I decided to take control of my life. This is not a game or a contest.. there is no easy way or hard way.. there is no "cheating"... It's NOT A FREAKING GAME.. this is a battle, it's a war... there is success and failure.. I am taking this extra step to ensure that I'm a success and I win this battle of my life. If my choice upsets your delicate sensibilities, then go cry to someone who cares. -

How was your flight home?
SerendipityHappens replied to tesser85's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I stayed one extra day in the hotel but It really wasn't necessary. I flew from SanDiego to Boston non-stop. In the airport, our driver got us there in plenty of time for us not to have to rush to get our flights. Walking to the gate was not far or strenuous. I brought a small carry on which I didn't have to lift.. when I got on the plane, a flight attendant lifted it into the overhead compartment for me. I did not do preboarding as I felt it was not necessary for me. I made sure I had an aisle seat. I got up about every hour and walked up and down the aisle. I also did "point and flex" exercises while seated and I wore compression socks. I am 5'5" and weighed 290 at the time of my flight and the seatbelt fit fine with no extender and I was comfortable in my seat with both armrests down. I purchased two vitamin water zeros at the airport gift shop and was happy to drink those on the plane while everyone else was having their snacks. For medication, they gave some sublingual nsaid pain relievers upon discharge. I didn't need them... I did make sure I had plenty of gasx strips (helps with ACTUAL gas that is in your actual digestive track.. not the weird surgery gas that is in your shoulder) and I took a few of those when needed. -
$8200! What?!?!
SerendipityHappens replied to SLF1027's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also thought this was some awesome self-pay US price! I had to save up for mine too ($4,500 as a mexico sleever) I booked my procedure in November or December and didn't have it until March. That gave me four months to save and to get a jump start on losing weight. I was impatient and didn't want to wait to start my new life so just used all my time I was saving up to prepare myself for sleeved life.. AND I lost 45 pounds during this time! -
Unsupportive Family Members
SerendipityHappens replied to Amy O's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the update, I was wondering how things were going.Good job being a grown up! Sometimes it's REALLY hard to remember that you're an adult when you're dealing with your parents! You mom has her feelings hurt now and she'll get over it! BTW, I only told my sisters because I KNEW they'd be super supportive.. My mother, sister-in-law and extended family still have no clue. -

SO Annoying! Anyone else share my frustration?
SerendipityHappens replied to Aries's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had these feelings in the past when I'd focus on my own eating... this time around I'm much more relaxed about things. My BF is a little guy 5'6" 140 pounds... he eats like a horse doesn't bother me a bit. It does bother me sometimes when I see someone who is obese eating massive amounts of unhealthy food.. but in a sad way, not in a "want to slap the food out of their hands" way... Now when I watch an episode of Man-vs-Food.. I feel disgusted to watch people eat those massive quantities and see how miserable they are on the verge of vomiting... The only time I've been on the verge of slapping food out of someone's hand was when I was two days preop and on my first second day of clears... I was on the train from phila to Massachusetts and the lady behind me was eating a family size bag of Doritos for the ENTIRE train ride.. I'd hear her put it away.. then 5 minutes later I'd hear the bag again.. then crunch crunch crunch then I'd smell the chips... wash-rinse-repeat for SIX HOURS -

Lucky for those of us who use booking agencies, we have awesome drivers who bring us back and forth over the border and they don't run drugs while they're doing it. Lot of shady stuff goes down in Mexico.. FORTUNATELY we're very sheltered from that during our stays. -
worried since I can eat everything..no restriction :-(
SerendipityHappens replied to oldskoolsooz's topic in Food and Nutrition
How many ounces are you eating per meal? I could comfortably eat half a cup- 2/3 cup of food or 3-5 ounces without feeling overfull when I was 5 weeks out.. and now that I'm 11 weeks out I'm still eating the same amount. It's at the upper end of what people can eat during this time but it's not abnormal.. I just can't compare myself to the "two tablespoons and full" crowd. -
I am doing very low carb so many of the best sources of potassium are not on the menu at present. Most whey Protein powders have a good amount. Flounder and sole are good fish sources of potassium. Swiss chard has a lot. Avocado has a fair amount.. but even with this I was still short and was starting to get leg cramps at night! Electrolyte drinks are good sources but they also have a lot of SODIUM in them which I did not NEED. i already get enough sodium, even too much. I finally found Vitamin Water ZERO the "revive" flavor.. it has 880 mg of potassium.. that's 25% of the RDA.. I've been drinking a bottle a day and it's just enough to fill in the gap of what I'm missing. Other flavors of the Vitamin Water Zero do not have this amount of potassium.. only the "revive" flavor.

Sleevers over 300lbs?
SerendipityHappens replied to dstined4gr8tnes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
there is a sub forum on this board specifically for those of us with 200+ pounds to lose where y'all will find a lot of inspiration! My highest weight was 360 with a BMI of 60, my weight when I started considering surgery was 335 and my weight on surgery day was 290.. I'm currently at 260 with just over 100 more pounds to go. I too struggled between VSG and RNY and even DS.. but I truly believe that I can do it with the VSG. -
Bought my first "Large"
SerendipityHappens replied to Wls4me's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Size L is AWESOME!!!!! Congratulations. -
I started at 6 weeks without issues... though I can't eat a "HUGE" salad. It's mostly meat with just a little bit of greens and some diced veggies.... I mostly choose spinach for my salad because it gives me the most nutritional bang for my buck.
