Houston Park plaza hospital
john galt replied to disney2013's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I had my sleeve by Dr Yu at Park Plaza. The hospital, staff, equipment and so on were great. Dr Yu is a great surgeon. I went home the day after my surgery. Good luck! -
That's all I have to say about that.

Here is a recipe that my wife perfected over the last 2 months: No Pasta chicken Spagetti Ingredients 1 medium Spagetti Squash 1.2 lbs of Rotisserie Chicken (it took almost 1 1/2 chickens) 1 1/4 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 1 1/4 cup of diced Bell Pepper (I used mostly red with a little green) 1 diced small white Onion 1 can Cream of Chicken Soup - low fat 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup - 98% fat free Salt / Black Pepper / Italian Seasoning Steps 1 Cut spaghetti squash in half, remove seeds, and place cut side down on a foil lined baking pan. 2 Bake for 45 minutes at 375 degrees. Let cool and remove the spaghetti like flesh with a fork. 3 Place the spaghetti like flesh back on the baking sheet, spread it out evenly, and bake for 30 minutes at 180 degrees to reduce the liquid in the squash. Stir after 15 minutes. Remove from the oven when the very tips of the squash look like they are drying out. 4 In a mixing bowl, combine all other ingredients except salt, pepper, and seasoning. Mix together and spread on top of spaghetti squash while still on the baking sheet. 5. Evenly distribute the salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. I used about 1 1/4 teaspoon of Kosher salt, 1 teaspoon of fresh cracked black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of Italian Seasoning. 6. Mix all ingredients very well and transfer to a 9 x 13 casserole dish. 7 Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Makes about 10 Servings. My nutrition app gave this per serving: Calories 187; Fat 8 grams; Carbs 9 grams; Protein 18 grams

I was sleeved on December 10, 2012, and I just returned from a 5 day business trip to China during the last week of February 2013. I scheduled my surgery in December hoping that I would be well enough to travel, and I am happy to report that everything went just fine. Here are couple of points that may help future travelers: - Overall, my recovery from the surgery has been trouble free, and I feel that I could have easily made this trip at the end of January. - I was a little nervous about carrying all of my Vitamins and meds (Multivitamin capsules, D3 gels, Biotin, Calcium chews, and Prilosec) through security, but no one even asked about them. - I did not bring any Protein powder, but I did eat 3 or 4 Quest Protein Bars during the trip. - I had no problems getting enough to eat. Most mornings I had an omelet in the hotel for Breakfast, and I had chicken and vegetables for lunch and dinner. I avoided some of the more exotic food choices, but I did try Yak meat for the first time. - All of my colleagues know that I have the sleeve, so they were generally supportive of any special needs such as eating half of a Protein Bar for a mid-afternoon snack. - I did not use this suggestion, but I read in an earlier post that some travelers sent Protein Powder and other food to their hotel by FedEx so that they would not have to carry it through airport security. - I thought that I was over eating during the trip and promised myself that I would get back to my normal eating practices as soon as I got back home. However, I was surprised when I found out that I lost 5 pounds in 5 days. - For exercise during the trip, I walked on a treadmill in the hotel everyday for at least 45 minutes. Good luck to all.

International Travel after VSG

The Yak meat tasted like beef, but it was a little sweet. Maybe it was the seasoning? -
Houston, Tx Surgeons- Help please!
john galt replied to jennaleigh1992's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
When I first called Dr Yu's office, they gave me a self-pay price for the VSG, and I believe it was about $14,700. However, Dr Yu diagnosed me as having a Hiatal hernia. I had the VSG and hernia repair at the same time. The hernia was covered by my insurance, so my cost for the VSG was $10,500. I believe the savings was because the hospital stay was covered by insurance. Hope this helps. Good luck. -

How did you decide on your doctor?
john galt replied to newme31's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Based on my research, I decided that I wanted a Dr that (i) was a bariatric center of excellence; (ii) had done at least 100+ sleeve procedures; (iii) that spends at least 50% of his/her practice on bariatric surgery. I found Dr Sherman Yu in Houston at the Texas Laproscopic Center, and I could not be more happy with him, his office, and the results. I may have read that the bariatric center of excellence program is going to be merged with another program in order to have a unified and consistent rating system, but I am sure that you can find out more online. Good luck. -
