Lean vs Muscle Protein Powder
Richard Foor replied to angry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most important thing is to make sure it is whey protein. Some of the other proteins can cause problems. For example caseine protein forms a gel in your stomach which then releases slowly over time, obviously this is a problem if you only have a 5 oz stomach as while that is gelled in there nothing else will fit. -
Could use some guidance please

On the protein and water levels what they tell you is a generic number. The formula is a recognized system used by athletes. This is what is best because it helps you to heal. -
Could use some guidance please
Richard Foor replied to NoneYa's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You definitely need to see a Dr asap, if you are getting as much protein and water as you say you shouldn't be feeling that week. Do you have a fever, if so go to the ER to be evaluated, but by all means if you can't get to your surgeons call you PCP and get in to see them. You could try increasing your protein and water anyhow to see if it helps if you use the formula of your weight in kilograms x 0.8 to 1.0 it should be 78 to 98 grams of protein a day, by the point you are at I was trying to get 96 oz of water. But as I said contact your dr and get checked. Good Luck. -
Weighing, stalls & realistic expectations
Richard Foor replied to zenandnow's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I personally weigh in every time I get to the gym, but I only truly consider it as accurate on Saturday or sunday, depending on which day I make it to the gym that weekend. I do record the weight every weekend. and anytime it is at least 1 lbs down. If you are able to not be discouraged by the weight variations that are perfectly natural it is fine to weigh frequently but if you are one of those people who will get upset everytime your weight doesn't change or worse yet goes up a pound then you should limit the frequency that you weigh in. Good Luck. -
Sorry for your loss.

I believe that whether people admit it or not everyone goes through a phase after post op where they feel they made a mistake and regret it, because the first month is so hard, your body is recovering from major surgery, and you are trying to change life long habits at the same time, in another month odds are those regrets will be totally gone. Not to give anyone a hard time but I can't emphasize enough how important it is to get your protein and hydration in as they are what make your body heal. If you are having trouble getting liquids in try drinking hot or warm liquids as it will decrease the swelling inside. Good Luck.

How soon after surgery did you come off your "lifestyle" meds?
Richard Foor replied to gamergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I stopped taking my BP med at the time of surgery and never started it back up. But I was only taking the lowest dose of Atenolol possible, as my pressure was just barely high and the med was more to prevent stress related spikes. That being said, no one should stop taking important medications without there Dr. approval, some Dr.s don't like to take people off meds because they are scared of liability if something goes wrong, but if you really insist they should help you wean off your meds. Good Luck. -
Every time I weigh in I update mfp, then come on here and update my ticker, and then I post an update on facebook. I know some people try to keep what they are doing a secret, but I personally love the support I get from all my friends and family.

As the others have said most are already on soft foods by this time so probably not an issue. However, if the pain continues and/or you develop a fever with it be sure to see a dr to be safe. Good Luck.

Are you on the website or one of the apps. on the website you should see a text entry box below the last post to enter your response in. On the android smartphone app you hit the menu button on your phone and there will be a button to respond. I don't know how the apple app works so maybe someone familiar with it will answer if that's what you need.

You have to remember that these numbers come from a limited number of studies that are done, and the sleeve is still newer of the procedures so there isn't as many studies yet. They come up with these numbers by averaging the results, so if you have some people that don't lose any weight or worse yet end up higher then where they started it will decrease the average percentage for the study. And ultimately none of this means anything, because people shouldn't obsess about the numbers you should want to be healthier then you are currently, so regardless what your percentage of loss is if you lose anything from the procedure you will be better off then you are now.

The thought process is that using a straw gets more air in, the reason they believe this is because when you are sucking through a straw odds are your lips are not forming an airtight seal on the straw and therefore you are sucking air in around the straw. That being said, I personally don't think it will be enough air to be a problem for most people. As such if you drank with a straw and didn't have any discomfort it probably wouldn't hurt to continue. On a side note my surgeon said the straw rule was just for the first week post op anyhow, so if your past that it definitely shouldn't be a problem. Good Luck.

Sleevers by profession.
Richard Foor replied to BWaltD's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have worked in Emergency Medical Services (ambulance) for the past 23 years, currently a Paramedic/Supervisor for the last 13. I am noticing more and more emergency services personnel showing up all the time here, funny most people would think we would all be healthy and fit from all the running around we have to do, of course if you haven't ever done the job you don't understand the amount of down time and pure stress of the job. I believe the stress in the medical fields are what truly lead to there being so many medical oriented folks who are overweight and therefore likely to get VSG. -
While the fluid intake is somewhat more important at this phase. Getting enough protein in helps you to heal faster and therefore will make you able to function quicker. So you should definitely be trying to get to your protein numbers. greater then 70 is the most common answer. There is a formula that states take your weight in kg(lbs/2.2) and take that time .8 for normal daily protein intake, furthermore it says for athletes to take the weight in kg times 1.2. Good Luck.

Pyloric Valve Question
Richard Foor replied to bon1984's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The answer to your question is pretty much yes, shakes do not stay in your stomach and therefore do not make you feel full, the protein is absorbed in the intestines. That is why people always say they don't feel the "full" feeling until they are on solid foods. However, I would also like to mention that my surgeon told me and I have stuck with, don't eat until you feel full, eat until you feel satisfied. Consistently eating until you feel full is more likely to cause problems and possibly sleeve stretching. Good Luck. -
I need your help!
Richard Foor replied to taylormarie421's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You definitely need to try and increase that protein. If you don't get enough protein your body will have to break down muscle mass to get the protein which will make you weak and tired, and actually slow your ability to burn calories. Good Luck. -
1-week stall....REALLY?!
Richard Foor replied to CorvetteGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes that is the numbers I've used since going to solids. And I go to the gym at least 3 days a week and do 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weights. I also use a fitbit too measure steps, and try to get a minimum of 10,000 steps a day. -
1-week stall....REALLY?!
Richard Foor replied to CorvetteGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My calorie intake is between 800 and 900 a day. Protein greater then 70 grams. Carbs less then 50. -
1-week stall....REALLY?!
Richard Foor replied to CorvetteGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would probably increase water if you can. I personally have not ever increased my calorie intake from where it has been since I started solid foods. -
1-week stall....REALLY?!
Richard Foor replied to CorvetteGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First thing to do I stay calm, it is perfectly normal and natural to have slow downs or stalls along the way, stick to your plan and the weight loss will resume. You might consider tracking measurements, a lot of times when the scale isn't moving the waist is. Good Luck, enjoy the journey, it gets easier to deal with as time goes by. -
MY Statistics 84 days post-surgery
Richard Foor replied to mustaphr's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congratulations on the success so far. Sounds like you have a good idea of what works and what you need to do yet(quit smoking) At the point you are at now I had increased my water intake to 3 L (96 oz), I am now at 8 months and am drinking 4 L. It is especially true when you are dealing with hotter weather, which I suspect you do a lot. Good Luck, enjoy the journey. -
Any pain like this should be reported to your dr asap, that being said it could possibly just be a pocket of air stuck in there causing the pain so it may not necessarily be something bad but definitely call your dr and have it checked, and if you have a fever with it consider going to the ER. Good Luck.

I found that the preop diet was rough for the first couple days but after my body adjusted it wasn't to bad, hopefully it will get better for you. It's also helpful to concentrate on why you are doing this and how much better you will feel after the weight is gone. Good Luck.

Most multivitamins are recommended to be taken with a meal, I believe this is reduce nausea caused by them. I personally take my vitamins immediately before eating breakfast. Good Luck.

I sneeze when I get completely full, I usually try to stop eating when my nose starts to run so as not to get to that point.
