I can say that my surgery was covered by insurance but due to high bmi was able to forgo the 6 month requirements, so I first met with my surgeon on October 18th 2012, started my preop testing the next week, and had surgery December 10th 2012. Could have been a little quicker if it hadn't been for thanksgiving getting in the way, but took about 2 weeks to get all my preop testing done, then had a 2 week preop diet to get in, so I would think a minimum of 1 month.

I probably eat anywhere from 600 to 900 calories a day, and a minimum of 80 g protein
-
Yeah, unfortunately I ate it before I could take a picture so maybe next time I will get the picture, but the smell of a good reuben makes it hard to think about taking pictures. lol
-
No, the protein is still the same no matter how many calories you burn. I regularly burn more calories then I eat and it has not been a problem at all. Good Luck.

I actually eat frozen yogurt almost every night, I have used the beyer's Carbsmart ice creams in the past they are decent and you can easily work the numbers into most plans. Currently I actually tend to go to the sweet frog and get frozen yogurt, it's nice that you buy it by the oz so you can get just the right amount and if you use mfp the nutritional's are on there. I Have also used the fiber one brownies they are only 90 calories and have 5 g of fiber. Good Luck.

This varies greatly between the different surgeons. I personally had coffee the day after surgery in the hospital and have drank at least 1 cup every day since. Good Luck.

The hardest thing with trying to track your potassium intake is that unlike most of the other things we track, potassium is not required to be on the nutrition facts on products and therefore is skipped a lot, making the numbers we see on mfp for potassium way off. So as you say regular lab work is very important, my surgeon does order it every couple months. What truly sucks is that most of the things that are highest in potassium are things we don't normally eat post op i.e. potato's, bananas are a good source but personally they don't agree with me well since surgery. Good Luck, and glad to hear you got it figured out.

Yes the most common cause of headaches and fatigue in the early phases is not enough hydration and/or protein. You should be trying to get at least 64 oz of water a day. If you are having trouble drinking the water first off try flavoring it with something like MIO, second you can try warm or hot liquids to reduce the swelling inside in order to help get the liquid to go down better. Good Luck.

When did you go back to work?
Richard Foor replied to blackfalls's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a paramedic/supervisor, I had surgery on December 10, 2012 and went back to work on December 26th, I felt I could have went back on the 23rd but my work week runs from Wednesday to Saturday anyhow so I just fell into that, plus that way I went back after Christmas. Fortunately was not very busy my first couple shifts back but I think I would have been ok anyhow. -
I truly don't believe there are any in the long term. Even the grape skins aren't a problem after you heal despite what some say. I am 9 months post op and can eat anything I choose to, the key is not to choose to eat some things.
-
Most of the time when people are talking bad about the surgery they don't really have any clue what there talking about. The stories are always about there friend's cousin or something, and they don't even know which surgery they had. So unless someone is telling you something about the surgery and they themselves had it, I wouldn't put to much weight to it. Being scared is completely normal and common, just try to keep in mind your reasons for having the surgery and that will guide you through. Good Luck.

Fresh fruits and veggies post-op
Richard Foor replied to QueenCityGal's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
As the others have said definitely not a forever thing, and like so many things what different surgeons recommend varies greatly. My surgeon didn't say anything like thins, once I was able to do solid foods at about 1 month out he said to eat any fruits and vegetables I could handle but to just take them slow at first to make sure I could handle them. I am currently 9 months out and can eat anything I choose to, the key is to make the best choices though. Good Luck. -
Woops I was thinking of casein sorry about that. Guess I should make sure i'm fully awake before I post, lol.

No liquids with meals
Richard Foor replied to Michelle Martin-Trotter's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
It is a very difficult change to make because of learned behavior, but it is important because it tends to make the food slide through the pyloric sphincter quicker leading to possibly over eating. So I have heard of some people who couldn't get this under control but were successful at just measuring there food and being careful not to overeat. Those of us who don't eat until we are full anymore, would find this much easier then others. Good Luck. -
Weight gain in the hospital?
Richard Foor replied to aTXtumbleweed's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes it is from the fluid retention from the IV as well as swelling, as soon as you get your bladder moving properly again that should come right back off, so the key is to try and drink your recommended 64 oz of water and it will melt back off. Good Luck. -
Which Bariatric vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements do YOU take ?
Richard Foor replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
On the potassium discussion, mfp is not accurate on that because potassium is not required to be listed on the nutrition facts on things, so it is hard to get an accurate idea how much your are getting.http://www.nutritionaloutlook.com/news/nutrition-facts-panels-often-omit-potassium As to the original question I take 2 GNC MEGA MAN Energy & Metabolism Vitamins, 1 Rite Aid brand Soft Calcium Chew ( 500mg calcium, 1,000 IU Vitamin D-3 & Vitamin K), 1 Spring Valley brand Biotin ( 1000 mcg), I Spring Valley brand Iron (65mg), and 1 Wonderlife supplements Witamin B-12 Lozenges (1,000 mcg). -
I make sure I am under 40 net carbs a day, but am usually much lower then that.
-
I have not tried any creatine style proteins because I understand that they form a gel in your stomach and then release the protein over a slower time frame, this seems like it would be difficult for sleevers as there isn't enough room in there for this kind of thing and I would be afraid the gel would stop you from getting other necessary nutrients in. So, I am curious have you used creatines before and if so how did it go.

do you feel BETTER? HOW?
Richard Foor replied to birdmadgirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I started out at 379 and over the past 8 months have lost 144 pounds, and I will tell you that I feel a whole lot better, I have more energy then I think I ever had, I feel healthy, and I find myself running around and doing things I never thought I would. So yes you can feel better. Good Luck. -
As with so many things the instructions on this very widely between surgeons. Personally I was aloud to have coffee in the hospital the morning after surgery. I have since probably drank at least 1 cup everyday since, some days much more. The only thing I am extremely careful about it is that since coffee is a natural diuretic I made sure to increase my water intake to make up for the coffee so as to not be prone to dehydration. Good Luck.

Here a new recipe for a nice little Stromboli cupcake. Preheat oven to 400. Take a muffin pan and spray 4 wells with pam. Take a Joseph's Flatbread (available at walmart) whichever flavor you like I use the multi-grain personally, using a pizza cutter cut it In four equal squares. Put 1 square in each muffin well. Put 1 tablespoon of pizza sauce I use the great value brand from walmart. Then some chopped mushroom. Then I takes a slice of 97% ham lunch meat, I use the great value brand that comes in the little plastic box, chop that up and distribute between the wells. Next 1 tablespoon each of shredded mozzarella cheese, I use great value from walmart. Finally, place 1 slice of turkey pepperoni on top of each, I use the bridgeford brand from Walmart. Place in oven for a couple minutes till the cheese just starts to melt and the flatbread starts to brown, pull out and fold the corners over the top of each one and push down it should hold in the cheese at this point, place back in oven for about 6 minutes or until flatbread looks done. Per single muffin serving according to MFP: Calories 67 Carbohydrates 5 Fat 3 Protein 6

Fiddle you need to remember that ssri's are a stimulant themselves, mixing them with another stimulant like oxyelite will increase their effects on the body. This is most likely what is leading to your problems at this point. I also believe that these thermogenics build up in your system over time, which is why you are supposed to cycle off of them anyhow. Your goals are admirable, but your should not ignore any warnings on any medication or supplement. Sounds like you should try to get with your dr and get weaned off the ssri, unfortunately a lot of dr's don't like to wean patients off of things unless you really push them. Good Luck.

What is the energy pill your taking, alt of those ones like hydroxycut are mostly caffeine which will increase your bp and heart rate and can give you palpitations.
-
The increased size is quite common for people who work out. Now the pulsation and headache could be a result of some sort of irregular heart beat, so if it continues you might want to check it out. On a side note, in my 13 years of starting IV's on people in the ambulance, I have found that sometimes folks with the biggest, juiciest looking veins can be the hardest to get, because the veins will roll really easy since there isn't anything holding them, so you might still not be a good poke, lol.
