It truly is a shame that so many of the surgeons make things like no NSAIDS sound like a rule that will last forever. Everyone is different and everyone reacts differently to things this is why you should always find out what is safe to take from your own Dr.s who know your personal health and how to best treat you. Fiddle sorry to hear about your injury, it is a shame that over the years so little has been emphasized about proper ergonomics despite the numerous studies and experiences that have shown what can happen. At least now you know the problem and hopefully the therapy will fix you up. Good Luck.

Just putting it out there, so 'dirty' little secrets may see the light of day!

Keep in mind I am 9 months post op. But the carbonation didn't seem to be a problem. The problem was purely the impact of the alcohol which was much stronger and lasted much longer then in the old days. Also the calories were probably not good but I haven't brought myself to look it up, lol. -
Just putting it out there, so 'dirty' little secrets may see the light of day!

My biggest confession is that last Sunday night went to a football party at thedrive in movie theater I work at and me and my boss were drinking champagne which is something I used to drink an excessive amount of pre surgery. Any how between me and my boss we drank 5 bottles of champagne. I don't remember much after the 3rd bottle. On a side note there is nothing like watching football on a drive in movie screen. But now time to not drink for another 6 months. -

Protein Drinks: Liquid or Solid?
Richard Foor replied to VSG AJH's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
My understating is they are liquids and do not follow the before and after drinking rules. -
Try the quest bars they are available at GNC or online at http://www.questproteinbar.com/ Another one is the Oh Yeah! Victory bars online at http://ohyeahnutrition.myshopify.com/collections/all/products/ohyeah-victory-bars. They both have about 21 grams of protein per bar, they also both have a lot of fiber which is helpful.

My favorite is the apple pie flavor. I especially like to heat them for 20 seconds it then trays like warm Apple Pie. -
My original goal was 200 but as I get closer to that point I am thinking 180 is probably where I want to be. I am 5'6". I don't really care what those BMI charts say because everyone is different so you can't cookie cutter things like that. The most important thing is to find where you feel healthy and happy. Good Luck.

4 days post op - not sure which supplements or protein to take
Richard Foor replied to SleeveFox's topic in Food and Nutrition
As others stated focus on hydration primarily at this point get a minimum of 64 oz a day of liquid. When you start your solid food stage then start your vitamins, also I recommend Biotin it helps with the hair and nails, and a calcium chewy. As for protein after you can consistently get your 64 oz of liquid in in a day, then start working on protein you should get a minimum of 70 grams of protein in a day whether it be from shakes or food. Any brand of Whey based protein is fine, everyone's tastes are different but the poster above gave a lot of good examples of what's available. Good Luck. -

Nutritionist Visit FREAKED me out :-(
Richard Foor replied to PinkBubble's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I personally drink about 128 oz a day and don not feel constantly thirsty, for that matter i usually drink the first 96 oz before 4 p.m. so that i only need 32 oz while i'm working since i work 4 to 12 shift for an ambulance, so i would not say i feel constantly thirsty since i am satisfied with my water. As to question 2 the reason for not drinking while eating is so the food doesn't go through to fast making you hungry again, it is a hard thing to get used to but personally i don't even miss drinking while eating anymore. On number 3 the need for protein shake/drinks is only in the first couple weeks until you get back to eating food, so i think it is really poor to say someone would die of malnutrition if they don't like shakes, Personally after transitioning to solid food i didn't drink any protein shakes for a very long time, i only started again recently because i am trying to build muscle now. There are unflavored protein powders available that can be mixed in anything. There are also some protein powders that taste like coffee and chicken soup, so there are other options available, and i'm sure you will get many other recommendations on here. Good Luck. -
Fever and a Hot Arm?
Richard Foor replied to sixbuttons's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Could be symptoms of a phlebitis(blood infection) or a blood clot. Neither of these are a good thing to mess around with so as has already been stated seek medical attention. Good Luck. -
soft foods.. how much should I eat?
Richard Foor replied to hope1106's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As with do many things the proper amount to eat varies greatly from person to person. I have always tried easy just enough to feel satisfied and never eat to feel full. In my opinion the key is to figure out where your satisfied feeling is, so start small and slowly increase till you get the right amounts. I'm guessing this what under rating your sleeve means but was never told that term so I just figured it on my own. Good luck, it gets easiest as time goes by. -
Woke up feeling awful 3 weeks post op
Richard Foor replied to wordygirl74's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Have you been getting in at least 60 oz of fluids, that is the most important thing at this point, if you are having trouble drinking enough try drinking different temperature drinks to help get enough in. If you are getting enough fluid, then how about protein, it shouldn't be that much of a big deal yet but if you aren't getting any in could make you feel crappy. If your doing ok with both fluid and protein then it is probably some sort of illness not related to the sleeve. Good Luck and hope you feel better. P.S. if you continue to feel crappy or develop a temperature seek medical attention. -
Congratulations, your doing great.

How do you track your calories?
Richard Foor replied to need2bthin!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also use myfitnesspal. For the first 8 months I was doing between 700-900 calories, less then 50 g carbs(usually less then 20), and at least 70 g of protein, and 96 oz of water. I am now doing between 900-1200 calories, less then 50 g carbs, between 120-150 g protein, and 128 oz of water. Don't worry about fat. Good Luck. -
Protein powder question
Richard Foor replied to liz89's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The protein can denature if heated, but when it denatures and just turns into amino acids which is what your body wants anyhow so shouldn't be a problem I my humble opinion. -
As the others have already said only you can know how hard you have tried and no one can predict the future to know how you will do either if you have the surgery or continue trying on your own. I personally have been very successful with this surgery but still would not wish to have had it any sooner in life because I needed to be properly prepared to make the life changes that lead to my success, and only you can know if you are properly prepared to make the necessary changes. I believe the surgery is a useful tool for anyone at any stage of there life if they are properly ready for it. Good Luck in making your decision, and in the coming journey either way.

4 months out and falling off wagon
Richard Foor replied to mamamareli's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tend not to respond to these arguments when they repeatedly occur but just this once I would like to point out that a lot of the time the comments just keep escalating and getting ruder all the time so what I believe started as a different style of giving advice has escalated to an all out argument where everyone is calling everyone else names when they don't even really know each other. Till its all said in done almost everyone ends up breaking the forum rules. Also it should be noted that the moderators dont read every thread so if you think they should get involved you probably should report it to them so they can make a judgment on where it all went wrong. Just my observation not taking sides either way. -
How many calories during puree stage?
Richard Foor replied to grateful-1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't count calories till I got to solid foods, odds are you can't eat enough in puree's to matter how many calories. A Stall and possible gain is likely when transitioning between stages, and in my opinion the best thing to do is to stick with your plan as defined by your dr and it will not last. It also seems from what I have read here people in your weight range are even more likely to have the stall and be slower losers but you need to try to stay positive and trust in the plan. Good Luck. -
no drinking BEFORE meals?
Richard Foor replied to angry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think a lot of these drinking rules are still based on results from the other weight loss surgeries. I believe that is why there is so much variation from the Dr.s, that being said I don't think that with the sleeve it needs to be as long before eating because the bottom of the stomach is still intact in it's designed form and as such liquid should drain out relatively quickly and therefore not effect your eating. But of course I always say you should follow the guidelines set for you by your Dr. but you could always talk to them about it if you have problems with the rule, I bet there is a lot of wiggle room in the rule. Good Luck. -
Relationship between gastric and respiratory tracts
Richard Foor replied to SqueakyWheel&Ethyl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The Vagus nerve travels down right next to the esophagus, and I believe when we have eaten to much it causes pressure on the vagus nerve which then starts the sympathetic system which has an effect on histamine release witch in turn causes your nose to run. -

Do you have an eating disorder?
Richard Foor replied to gamergirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I tried the screening using the answers as I would have answered them before I had the surgery and it cam back negative, I then took it again with my current answers and it was still negative. That being said I think we all probably had some sort of eating disorder or we probably wouldn't have ended up here in the first place, but I guess if the tests come back negative that's probably a good sign that our disorders were minor enough that we should be able to overcome them. Anyhow, thanks for the interesting post.
