What should those do who can not digest protein ?
Richard Foor replied to indian's topic in Food and Nutrition
There are several different types of protein. They are very different in the way they are digested. So they should probably try some different types to find the best. As was stated above whey isolate is supposed to be the easiest to digest which is why it is recommended after WLS. Also beware some protein products will have multiple types of protein making it even more complicated. -
I know a lot of people say decaf on here but my surgeon said caffeine was fine so I have never used decaf, but as with most things every surgeon is different, so should probably check with yours to be sure. Also, I have found the MIO flavorings are pretty decent for water. I know that early on when I had problems with energy is was more related to Protein, make sure your getting enough protein, my Dr recommended a minimum of 60 grams per day.

My 1st year anniversary
Richard Foor replied to PreciousCargo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Very Inspirational, and congratulations on your amazing success. -
I think that that is very subjective to your personal tastes. I personally haven't had any I didn't like so I usually just buy the ones that have the best nutritional facts and are cheapest. Good Luck.

medication question
Richard Foor replied to Mastiff_mama's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your surgeon or Dr. should help you to figure out if any of your pills will be to hard to swallow, if any of them are to big they may be able to get you a different form of the med or some of them can be crushed or cut to be swallowed easier. Good Luck -
I never had to blend the canned meats personally but I know some people are more sensitive then others. Also, sometimes with them especially tuna and chicken adding a little reduced fat mayo helped make it easier. The underwood spread is already the texture of having been blended so it is definitely good to go right out of the can.

Yeah refried beans also I just forgot about them. Humus also works but with it only having 2 grams of Protein I tried to stay with things that gave me more proteins to keep the energy levels up.

what does our insides look like ?
Richard Foor replied to Lisa'slosinit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
While I honestly don't know for sure and am sure it will very by the Dr. I would think they wouldn't scope you unless you were having some sort of symptoms but I could be wrong. -
When I was on puree I just tried to keep it simple, did mostly canned meats. Obviously tuna, then they have in the same type of cans as tuna, chicken, turkey, ham and roast beef, They were all pretty good in my opinion. The other thing I really liked was the underwood roast beef spread. For me puree was only 2 weeks so between these, egg salad, scrambled eggs and some canned no bean chili I just kept it simple and made it through to the next phase. Good Luck.

Good apps for tracking weight and inches lost?
Richard Foor replied to bostonhok's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My fitness pal tracks inches on the website but unfortunately does not have any way to do it on the phone app. Now if you go to the website on your phones browser and log in you can enter the measurements at least on android not sure if it works on iphone. -
That is always good advice to disclose all your family history. I don't know much about hemochromatosis or what the effect of elevated iron is on the heart. But I will say that the Vagus nerve travels right next to the esophagus and is easily stimulated by changes in air pressure in the esophagus. As a paramedic when we have a patient with an svt (elevated heart rate originating from above the ventricles) we often have the pt hold there breath, or blow through there lips to cause a vagal response to slow the rate so we can better see what exact rhythm is on the monitor to tell us how to treat it appropriately. So, I would think a vagus response is quite common when inflating the abdomen during the procedure, your just seems to have been more drastic than expected. Glad it all worked out though.

Feel Gross After Eating?

Most Dr's would rather you call to often then wait till things get to bad. -
Feel Gross After Eating?
Richard Foor replied to Beckyyb93's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is one you probably need to call your Dr. about. I almost sounds like you are feeling the restriction but on to little food, maybe there is swelling issues or maybe the stricture is still a problem but it definitely doesn't sound normal. Good Luck. -
Waking up with acid and vomiting mucus with blood
Richard Foor replied to Looking Ahead's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It definitely sounds like acid reflux to me. But you would think the Prilosec would take care of that, you should definitely call your Dr. and ask him what to do, maybe he can try a different reflux med or maybe it is something totally different. Good Luck -
How do you know if your full or its just gas?
Richard Foor replied to JP69's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It's hard to say it is probably more the air then being full because most people including myself didn't feel full while on liquids because liquids leak through the pyloric sphincter into the intestines. That being said what I found to be best was to measure out my portions and drink them not looking for full feeling at that stage. I never drank more then 8 oz of any one thing at a meal, a lot of people will probably say a lower number because the amount you can get in is directly related to the amount of swelling you have. I should also say that those meals took at least 30 minutes sometimes closer to 45 to drink because I took my time and sipped. This is what worked for me, hope it helps, good luck. -
Who has had their sleeve the longest?
Richard Foor replied to himalaya62's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My mother told me that my grandfather had had that procedure for ulcers and had lived for over 40 years after the surgery, when he did die it was from lung cancer so probably not related to the surgery. He died when I was a teenager which is over 20 years ago so you could deduce from this that a variation of the sleeve even though for a different reason has been around for at least 60 years. Also what I remember of my grandfather he was very skinny and ate very small amounts but ate at least 5 times a day. -
Scared this surgery wont work for me!
Richard Foor replied to kflan's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I personally didn't really feel any restrictions till I moved to solid food. But believe me now that i'm on solids I feel it when I get full. When I was on puree I to could eat anything pureed but I never ate enough of it to feel it, keep in mind that purees will leak through the pyloric sphincter like liquids but not as drastically which I believe is why you don't feel the restriction as much with them. Hope this helps, good luck. -

Had turkey chilli last night stage 4
Richard Foor replied to mzrich's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What I was told about reintroducing new foods is start slow take a bite then wait a couple minutes to see how it goes. If you have a problem with a food wait at least a week before trying it again. Hope that helps, Good Luck. -

Beating pre op cravings!
Richard Foor replied to SoCalDixieGal's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
When you get to the liquid phase it will be very easy to lose that 11 lbs, at least it seems to be for most. Also after about the 3 day of liquid I stopped having any cravings and from what I've read on here it seems common. -
how much did our tummies weigh .......
Richard Foor replied to Lisa'slosinit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Funny thing is I keep meaning to ask my Dr that question but always forget. I don't think the stomach itself would weigh very much since it is just an empty sack, but I really don't know. I just looked up on the internet that the average stomach weighs between 125-175 grams(4.4-6.1 oz) so if you do the math 3.52 to 4.88 oz. -
what is pre-op diet?
Richard Foor replied to Saving my life for my kids's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I think that the other benefit of the pre-op diet is to help you to build the self control needed for post op. That being said many people have cheated on there pre-op diets including me, and when I ask my Dr about it he said it was OK as long as I regained control and continued to lose weight. Most of these diets are just what the Dr. has found in his experience produces the best overall results. Good Luck.
