what happens if you don't get enough protein in?
Richard Foor replied to oldskoolsooz's topic in Food and Nutrition
If you don't get enough protein in your body will need to break down muscle tissue to get what it requires to function, this in turn will slow your metabolism making weight loss slower. Also, low protein levels will make you tired and weak. Therefore getting your protein in is very important to continue to have a successful weight loss journey. -
Since it is Memorial day I thought this would be a good time to list my new healthy version of a mountain pie. I preheat the mountain pie Iron in the fire. Then take either some pam or I can't believe it's not butter spray butter and spray in both sides of the iron. Then take 1/2 of a Joseph's brand flatbread lay it in 1 of the irons wells with the overhang towards the hinge. then chop up a Hebrew national brand 97% fat free hot dog and place on the flat bread, then place 1/8 cup aldi's fit and active shredded cheddar cheese on it. You can then add onions, peppers, ketchup, mustard whatever just figure out what you have to add to the numbers. Fold the flatbread over and close the pie iron over it. Cook in the fire same as any mountain pie. Richard Foor replied to Richard Foor's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
Or for those that prefer the pizza style mountain pies use the same technique but instead of hot dog use 1 tablespoon pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella, and turkey pepperoni. too much time off!
Richard Foor replied to sheree212's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah I would believe think from the sounds of it you spend most of your day on your feet which would get very difficult for some time post op, especially if heaven forbid you had any difficulties getting your fluids or proteins in. I am a paramedic/supervisor and started back to work 2 and a half weeks out but had to start out primarily doing administrative work because I didn't have enough energy to run calls on the truck, and that is even though I had no difficulties getting my liquids and proteins in. For the first month I was tired a lot as I believe most people are, so it is best to take your time and let your body heal before easing back into your normal daily routine, then before you know it you will find you'll have more energy then you ever had. Good Luck now and throughout your journey. -
I believe there are benefits and downfalls to both procedures. Have you spoke to the surgeon already, I would be interested to hear what they felt was the best option. It does seem odd to think a sleeve could be stretched enough to be redone in just 3 years but I guess anything is possible. I always say in life it's not the mistakes we make that define us but how we respond and overcome those mistakes. Good luck now and throughout your journey.

Welcome Ashwini. It is completely normal to be anxious leading up to and even following your surgery, many many people on here have gone through it. The most important thing is to focus on your reasons you chose to have this surgery and try not to worry it will all work out in the long run. I had my surgery on December 10, 2012 and am down 114 pounds already. Good Luck now and throughout your journey.

As the others have said this is perfectly normal and a direct result of the swelling. The one piece of advice I try to give everyone is to try to drink warm liquids early on as it will help reduce the internal swelling, this Is what I did and was able to get well over my required water intake by the 2nd day post op, always keep in mind everyone heals at their own rate so you mileage may vary. Good Luck now and throughout your continued journey.

crystal light commonly uses aspertane for it's sweetener, mio uses sucralose(splenda). So you might want to give mio a try, then if that is better you will know what to look for when you look at different drink mixes. Good Luck.

protein drinks opinions
Richard Foor replied to ********'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have drank both the advent-edge and atkins products and found both to be very palatable, but that being said everyone has there own opinions on these things and unfortunately a lot of people seem to change their opinion post op as opposed to pre op. Anyhow, at first I found it easier to stick to the plain flavors like vanilla or chocolate until I developed a better sense for them. Good Luck. -
I did not have to do the supervised diet stuff due to having a higher BMI so my seminar was in early October, first preop apt October 18th, and surgery December 10th.

Pre-op diet ?
Richard Foor replied to 1stBabeBorn5th's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I personally felt the same as usual during my preop liquid diet, I attribute this to the high level of protein making up for the lower calories, but everyone seems to handle these things differently. -
You can have crackers at the full food stage. That being said many including myself have chosen to avoid eating items that are high in starchy carbs like breads, crackers and pastas. Keeping the carbs below 40 a day seems to help keep the weight loss at a good rate.

HAVE A ? ABOUT COUNTING CALORIES BURNED
Richard Foor replied to Mini Me Wanna~Be's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I carry a fitbit that tracks my steps all day and is automatically linked to mfp so I say count all your steps towards calories burnt. -
gum and hard candies!
Richard Foor replied to Jami<3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what my surgeon said and others have said here it seems most surgeons recommend not to use them for the first couple months. Not really sure what the reasoning is, I know some have been told because if you accidently swallow them they will block up what little stomach you have, however I personally have never accidently swallowed gum in my life, but who knows. You might want to ask your surgeon or NUT since opinions vary. Good Luck. -
Sleeved April 16--How long until I can go back to work as a RN?
Richard Foor replied to Suko67's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
On the CPR issue I will tell you from experience I did CPR on a patient at about 1 month post op and actually did better compressions then I had in many many years. -
Sleeved April 16--How long until I can go back to work as a RN?
Richard Foor replied to Suko67's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
This like so many others things is dependent on your surgeons opinion. I am a paramedic and was released to go back to work at 2 weeks post op. My only weight restriction was nothing more then 25 pounds for the first 2 weeks, after that I was just told to take it slow but to work my way back up to it. Good Luck. -
is there coffee in my future?
Richard Foor replied to ladylei0's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is an issue that every Dr/NUT seems to have differing opinions on. Personally I drank coffee the day after surgery in the hospital, and have drank coffee every day since with no issues. Now some people will say coffee will irritate your stomach lining and causes difficulties with healing, my surgeon says while this can be true if you didn't have issues with adverse reactions to coffee prior to surgery you shouldn't after either. It is true that coffee is a natural diuretic which is why it is advisable not to count it towards your daily fluid intake and can actually cause some people to need more fluids to make up for it. One good thing about starting to drink coffee early is that hot liquids will help to decrease the swelling in your esophagus and stomach post op making it easier to they get your daily fluids in. So coffee can definitely be in your future but as with everything post op should be discussed with your dr and started slow to make sure you can tolerate it. Good Luck. -
Yes as time goes by and your body adjusts you will be able to enjoy food again. Yes you can put soft cheese and pickle on your deli meat as long as you chew it enough, I actually used a lot of laughing cow cheese when I was on soft foods. There is a lot of factors involved in how your stomach handles the food at this time and some of those factors will change at different times of the day. Remember that potatoes are high in starch and therefore can stick and expand in your belly this usually isn't an issue with mashed because of the way they are mixed but baked can be difficult. You might want to consider things like tuna, egg salad, and canned chicken breast these are easy to eat during this phase and also are very high in protein. Good Luck.

Extreme body and mood changes !
Richard Foor replied to sarahzamudio1091's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The hormonal changes are natural due to the major changes in your body chemistry, they should normalize with time though. The Headache may be a result of becoming dehydrated overnight which seems to be quite common, make sure you are getting as much fluid as possible, also I have read some people keep a drink by their bed so they can sip at night to help with this problem. Good Luck.
