Khaliah Ali (Muhammed Ali's oldest daughter who has the band and wrote the book Fighting Weight) is going to be in Grapevine doing a seminar on the lap-band on November 13th. Is anyone planning on going? I would love to but it's a work night and I live 1.5 hours away so I don't know if I will be able to or not.

Easy cheese Grits Combine 3 cups of Water and 2 teaspoons of salt and bring to a boil. Stir in 3/4 cups of uncooked quick grits and cook over low heat 5-10 minutes or until done. Combine 2 eggs, beaten, 1/3 cup melted butter or margarine. Stir a small amount of hot grits into the egg mixture, stirring well; then stir the egg mixture into the grits. Add ½ loaf velveeta cubed or 1 ½ cups shredded american and stir over low heat until cheese is melted. Spoon the mixture into a well greased 8X8 glass dish and bake at 250 degrees for about 45 minutes or until firm.

What exactly does it mean: The band is too high
mandi78 replied to Poodles's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Poodles-What has happened with your situation? Does the dr think it was always too high? Will he replace it or does he just want to remove it totally? -
The only way I know of is an x-ray. Did you doc do one after surgery before he sent you home? Mine did.

*** life at 3wks of being banned****
mandi78 replied to magooz07's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 2 1/2 weeks post op and I am feeling the same things. A lot of it is head hunger for me. I've gone so long without really eating that I just WANT to eat and I NEED to eat. I'm hoping I haven't stretched my pouch too. It's just been the last 2 days that I have been eating more than I should be. I have to try to get this under control. I had heartburn today for the first time since before I started my pre op diet and I know it's from eating too much. I can't wait to start getting my fills and hope that will help and that I can get better control of myself. -

My birthday is coming up at the end of this month and I will be one month out of surgery (won't have my 1st fill yet). Birthdays in mine and DH's family usually involves going out to eat or someone cooking a big meal. Any suggestions for what would be something I could eat by then (I will be on soft foods) that everyone else could eat too? Or suggestions for something we could do besides eat? We live in a smaller city so there is not a whole lot to do entertainment-wise. Plus, there will be a little one (my 2 year old niece) and I don't want to do anything that she could not be a part of.
-
I'm thinking about doing a game night. I LOVE board games. And my niece would probably be satisfied watching Dora while we play...lol. I was thinking of the finger/snack food type thing too. I will be exactly one month out from surgery on the day we have it. Would I be able to eat stuff like maybe quesadillas, chips/dip, appetizer type foods.....anything like that? My dr gave me a list of 2 weeks of liquids and 2 weeks of mushies but nothing specific after that and it will be just over 4 weeks.

Once I get a fill or 2 that is. :hungry:
-
That sounds really good Laura. And probably a couple would be the perfect meal.
-
Or get the canned pizza dough (like the canned biscuits), roll it out and and cut it in small circles or squares.
-
I know what you mean Arin.....I did too. I think this is the start of a new, healthy life for us!!!

My surgeon took me off both my meds (glucophage and Byetta) the day before surgery and I have not had to go back on them yet! I'm still watching my sugars in case they go back up but all looks good now!!!
-
Lauren-I've made that before. It's called Cherry salad or Pink Stuff. We also put a can of fat free eagle brand milk in it but that does add more cals and sugar. You can make it with or without nuts. It's great! My friend makes a pie with crystal light and cool whip. It's great. I'll have to get the recipe.

Try not to worry. They gave me the amnesia drug (I can't remember the actual name of it) before wheeling me out of the pre-op room and I had no clue what was going on and I remember only one thing after they gave me that until I was in recovery. The only thing I remember is them moving me from the gurney to the operating table and me asking if I was going to fall....lol....but even that is a blur and more like a dream than an actual memory. It was not bad at all. I thought I would be more nervous than I was but I was so excited that I could not be nervous. To me, the risk was worth not continuing to live as I had been living.....failing health at 28 years old, inability to do anything physical, etc. I feel that my marriage has changed for the better and that it will continue to. I am only 2 weeks out but my DH sees the effort I am making and success I am having and he is proud of me. Just remember the docs and staff do this every day and it's a relatively minor surgery in comparison to most surgeries. And, once you get home your surgeon is just a call away and there is always the ER if you think something is really wrong. I'm sure you will do great! Good luck!!!!

First Day on Mushies & HUNGRY!
mandi78 replied to kbear's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Leona-You may or may not have any problems. But, why risk it? You could cause your band to slip by eating too soon and then they would have to go back in and fix it which would mean liquids again and then mushies again....you'd basically have to start over with the the post-op diet. It's a chance I personally am not willing to take, it's not worth it. -
how long does swelling last
mandi78 replied to want_so_bad's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Were you referring to internal swelling in your stomach or external belly swelling? Because the external belly swelling lasts awhile. I'm 2 weeks out and still have it. My pants are tighter today than they were before I lost 23 pounds!!!! It's very frustrating. I hope it goes away soon too. -
how long does swelling last
mandi78 replied to want_so_bad's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your swelling should be going down now and that is why you are starting to feel hungry. I only sipped the first week or so. I am just starting my 2nd week out and I don't sip any more. I drink a lot of Water anyway (even before surgery) and I get really thirsty so I do full swallows most of the time I TRY not to gulp but sometimes I'm just so thirsty I can't help myself. Note that I am not advising you to do this, just telling you that I have and it hasn't seemed to cause any problems. Check out this thread I started about sipping. I was having trouble with that too. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f17/do-we-have-sip-forever-42280/ -
What is the difference between mushies and soft food? On my mushies, I am allowed: cottage cheese oatmeal cream of wheat grits cream Soup mashed potatoes soft cooked veggies ripe bananas soup with noodles blended Soups scrambled eggs refried Beans My dr didn't give me a list for what's next....I guess because I go in 4 weeks post op for a follow up and fill. I will probably get it then. I was just wondering what is considered "soft foods". Thanks.

Hi, I was banded 2 weeks ago. I have always had really oily hair and skin and acne. Since being banded, my skin looks great. It's almost completely cleared up and never oily and my hair doesn't get nearly as oily either. It's great and I love only having to wash my hair every other day. I'm just wondering if this benefit will last or if once I go back to eating regular food (I'm on mushies now) if my hair and skin will go back to being oily and having acne. Does anyone know or have experience with this? Thanks.

The sheet they gave me says full liquds/mushies on the page that lists the foods I listed above. I think they consider full liquids and mushies to be the same. On my first phase of liquids, I got pudding, yogurt and baby food fruit. Seems to me those would be more mushies than liquids. I don't know.....doesn't matter, I was just curious.

http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f9/liquid-stage-recipes-17636/ Keep in mind some of these are for post op and should not be used when trying to shrink your liver pre-op. For instance, those with potatoes and other starchy veggies, those higher in fat, etc.

Anyone know?

Unexpected benefits....will they last?
mandi78 replied to mandi78's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've always drank tons of water though and my skin has still been awful. Its only been since I've been banded that it's gotten better. -
Yes, I agree.....the Cookies I posted about are only 2 inches per serving so that's pretty small. I think I'd rather have the 100 calorie BAG of cookies than just one....lol. Have you tried the Lorna Doone shortbread ones? They are fabulous!
