My name is Brandy and my story is pretty typical as everyone else's that's dealt with being overweight all their life. I was a chubby kid and kind of thinned out a little in high school, then got married and had my two daughters. I've been between the size of 260 all the way to 308 was my top. I remember coming home from the Dr. after I realized how big I was and cried and cried and cried. I've tried diets in the past and always started off great and ended up just giving up. I guess it was easier to not try instead of trying. I ended up very depressed of course and was in alot of pain from being so big. I recall going to an amusement park and once i sat in the roller coaster seat they told me if it didn't latch one more time I had to get off due to being to big. I was thankful that it latched but that was pretty much my turning point and I knew I had to do something. My husband was in the same boat as me. He weighed 364 , had sleep apnea, was absolutely miserable. High blood pressure, etc... We decided to go and get information on weight loss surgery and ended up at Dr. Curry's office and decided on the vertical sleeve. We had our surgeries 2 weeks apart. Mine was first because my husband said ladies first lol. I did great during the surgery and then 2 weeks later I began to feel weird in a way I can't explain but i just knew something was wrong. Then I began to become nauseated so i went to bed and when i woke up i was shaking to the point of convulsing. I took my temperature and my fever was 102.7 and I knew something was wrong. I ended up vomiting and nothing was coming up so I tried to lie back down after i calmed myself down and wasn't shaking so bad but I'm assuming my fever had me to the point that I felt like I was dreaming. I remember going to the bathroom again and next thing I know I passed out and my husband was screaming at the top of his lungs at me and I couldn't talk. I could hear him but couldn't talk. He calls 911 and I went to the ER by ambulance. My heart rate was 156 and my blood pressure had dropped to 59 over 33 . I ended up with an abscess on my stomach and was transferred to Cincinnati Christ Hospital. Once I got there I was in septic shock and I also had Sepsis which is a blood infection for those of you that don't know. I was in ICU for 3 days and a total of 10 at the hospital. It was a horrifying experience for me and my family. My husband was scared to get his surgery but I told him to go for it and he would be just fine. Thank God he went through it and healed very well. I ended up off work for 7 1/2 weeks and it took me what seemed like forever to get my energy back. So now after a long 8 months I'm feeling pretty good:) I just thought i'd share my story because what happened to me happens in like 1 out of a million! My doctor was fantastic and came to the hospital every day to check on me. For a long time I didn't know if the surgery was worth it but the difference in how I feel with almost 90 pounds off is remarkable. My husband has lost almost the same as me and doesn't have to use his sleep apnea machine anymore. Our marriage is better than ever and I hope to continue to lose more weight! I can actually say now that It's worth it. It's not easy by any means but it's worth it in the end:)
