    Gym Time

I am pre-surgery, but I have some suggestions about the gym. First off, I would try several different things at the gym. Here are some things to try: 1. Get on a treadmill and walk on an incline(3.5-5.5) at a fairly decent pace (3.5-4.0 mph) for 4 minutes, then on the fifth minute lower the incline to 0, and run for 1 minute at (5.5-6.5), then repeat for 30 minutes total. 2. If your gym has an arc trainer, they are really awesome. It's my favorite machine at the gym. I do the weight loss, hill climb mode for about 45 minutes and a I burn around 600 calories. 3. Try a spinning class. You can burn TONS of calories with spinning! 4. Take a body pump class. Try lots of different thing and change your workouts up a lot! I would also suggest when you are on the machines to enter your weight and age. Good luck!

    January 2013 Sleevers?

January 18th here, so I'm right behind you!
  5. I worry about this. I am getting sleeved in January and I am cold all the time now. In preparation I have ordered a heated throw that was on sale at Kohl's black Friday sale. I hope I am not freezing all the time after surgery.
  6. I am 5'2". On 9/24 I was 205. Losing on my own until my surgery date (1/18/13). This morning I was 181.6.

    Dr. Alvarez

I am scheduled for surgery with Dr. Alverez on January 18th. I just mailed in my deposit yesterday. I am so nervous and so excited at the same time. I am hoping for a permanent solution to the ups and downs I have had over the last 20 years! I decided to start losing weight in September at 205lbs. I am 5'2", so that's a bmi of 37.5. I have lost 22 lbs and am down to 183, now my bmi is just above 33. I already feel so much better. It's hard to imagine getting to a "normal" bmi. Dr. Alvarez seems awesome and even though I am really nervous about my surgery, I feel good about my choice of surgeons!

    Low Bmi'ers...how Long To Goal?

I can't wait until after I am sleeved! I am a low bmi'er too. I am short (5'2") so I feel like every pound shows easily on me. When I first started researching the sleeve I was 205. I have lost 22lbs on my own and am now 183. I have scheduled my surgery with dr. Alvarez on jan. 18th! I am scared, nervous, and excited all at the same time. I am sending in my deposit tomorrow and kind of freaking out about it!

Looking To Do The Sleeve In Mexico

Dr. Alvarez. Surgery 1/18/2013!! I have corresponded with several of his former patients and even emailed him directly. He answered all my questions and I feel very comfortable with my decision. One of the reasons I picked him, aside from his outstanding reputation, is because he doesn't perform more than 3 surgeries a day-- and most of the time it is only 2 a day. I would hate to be the #6 surgery for some doc. Oh, the VSG is the only surgery he performs now-- he won't do a Lapband anymore because he has taken so many out. I love that he believes in this surgery-- he even wrote a book about it. Also, I want more individualized attention, and that is what I hear you get with dr. Alvarez. He may be a bit more than other Mexican surgeons, but for the reasons stated above, I think he is worth it.

    Thinking Of Not Doing It,

I think you should think about it more. Not because of 35 pounds, but because of your life situation over the last 5 years. You have been through a lot of things that can and have an affect on your weight. I would certainly try to get your weight under control on your own first now that you are passed all these things that affected your weight. You are right, this is a LIFETIME change and commitment. There is no going back once it's done. I have similar stats to you. I am 5'2" and 183. I have been overweight for about 20 years and have gotten as high as 205 this summer. I am busting my butt to lose as much as I can prior go surgery. I have only gotten to a "normal" bmi range twice in my adult life and was only able to stay there for a few months. I am in my 40s and my weight battle isn't getting any easier. Still, this has not been an easy decision for me, but I do feel that I am mentally ready for the changes that I will be making in my life. I so wish I could control this on my own. I think if I hadn't tried and failed so many times, I would be unsure of my decision as well. If I were you, I would try on my own first. Just my two cents. Good luck to you in whatever path you take!

    Two Weeks Post Op

I am pre-op, so I don't know how much I can help, but how many calories are your protein shakes. I know there a many different kinds and some are pretty high in calories. I'm sure the weight will start to come off, though!

    Dropped The Bomb....

Lol. This is why I have only old my mom and my husband. What is your surgery date? Would you mind telling me about your experience afterwards, since i'll be right behind you?

    Dropped The Bomb....

I'm also going to Dr. Alvarez. I am scheduled for January 18th. I told my mom in sort of a tricky way. First when I told her I was looking into this surgery with a local Dr. I then casually mentioned that there's a doctor who'd I really like to go to, who is the best and wrote a book about it, but I just didn't know. I mentioned that the VSG is the only surgery he does and that he won't even do lapbands anymore because of the complications that go with the band. She asked more about the the doc I mentioned. I then explained that he is in MX and everyone just raves about him, but I didn't know about going to MX. I then threw in that not only is he better and more experienced, but he's also less expensive than this local doc I was considering. She said, she'd go to MX to the better doctor. I couldn't believe it! Never in a million years did I think my mother would be supportive. She is very afraid of me becoming a diabetic and having to have shots the rest of my life. At first she thought I was rushing into it, but when I told her I was looking into the lapband 5 years ago, but after researching it, I decided against it because of the complications, she realized how long I have been struggling and researching this. She was adamently opposed to the lapband. I read lots of posts to her from people on this board (and reviews of Dr. Alvarez) and it seemed to convince her. I feel incredibly lucky to have her support!

When's A Good Time To Exercise

I am pre-op, and I'll definitely be exercising when I'm cleared to. How long after you were sleeves were you able to start exercising again? My coordinator says 1 month. Seems like a long time to me. Does that seem right to you guys?

Jan. 2013 Buddies! A New Year = A New Us!

Nune, if you don't mind me asking, what are your stats? I am currently 185lbs and I'm 5'2". I have to be in San Antonio on jan. 17th and surgery is on the 18th.

Anyone Else Have A Goal Size?

I am a size 16 jean now. I am also a shortie at 5'2". I would LOVE to wear a size 6 jean. I can't even fathom anything smaller than that (but would love it)! I carry most of my weight in my legs, so hopefully I'f be in a small top. I am getting sleeved 1/18/13.

    Very Upset Right Now

I think only 5% if people that lose weight through diet and exercise keep it off. The remaining 95% regain the weight. That is the reality. I wish more people in the fitness industry would get their heads out of the clouds and realize this.

Bmi 35 Need To Lose 75 Lbs

Hi and welcome! I am pretty new here too. I am also hoping to be a January2013 sleever. I started with a bmi of 37.5, but have been dieting on my own to get a head start. I am now at a bmi of 33.5. I am short (5'2") and want to lose another 60 lbs. I will be going to MX as my insurance has an exclusion for WLS. Are you self pay or covered through insurance?

Post Surgery Follow Up In Mexico?

I have wondered the same. When I was speaking to one of the coordinator's they told me that follow up care was included and I asked that same thing -- do people fly back. Then she clarified that it is only included while you are still in MX. Once you leave they are done. They will answer questions via email and phone, but not continue medical care. You may want to clarify with your doc what is considered "follow up care". I hope this helps! What doc are you using in MX?
