phantompouch replied to silvertaurus's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
something clearly went WRONG in my VSG...I had the surgery in NYC and I have been seriously ill for the last 15 months with severe and intractable pain and numbness in the thighs, legs, hips ,feet,stomach.....no relief....I became ill immediately after the surgery and I have deteriorated...to the point of muscle wasting and now, depression and PTSD....I used to function and work....I am unable to do so.....I have lost 160 pounds and look very sick.....anyone with the same issues ?please let me know ? -

Hi...so sorry that your husband is going through this....hope that he gets better.....I started out wanting to go to Mexico for the VSG however, after looking into it...I decided to find a fine surgeon in NYC,,,at Mount Sinai Hospital....I had the procedure in July and have already lost 71 pounds....had some eating issues at first however, things have gotten so much better.....perhaps, you should consult with other surgeons to see what their opinion is ?I used Dr. Daniel Herron....wishing that all goes well.....all the best....... R -
I had my surgery in July in New York City.....look up Dr. Daniel Herron at Mount Sinai Hospital......great place......had surgery two months ago and already lost 65 pounds....not easy....worth it.....I would never go to Mexico......the training is not the same....and many do not have post graduate fellowships in bariatric surgery.....[at least 2 to 3 yrs training post residency] best of luck.....
-
I was thinking about going to Mexico.....however, after doing due diligence and lots of research....I decided NOT to go in that direction...and have the VSG done in NYC at Mount Sinai Hospital......I have already lost 53 pounds---surgery was on July 24th..... Should you choose a surgeon..make sure that the doctor has post graduate training and a fellowship in bariatric surgery with years of certified training....and NOT,,,take 2 or 3 days seminars at a hotel vacation spot in the USA or other places around the world....that clearly is not proper surgical training....CME credits are given for attending these weekend meetings.....a doctor pays a fee and attends some lectures.....oftenm they go to play a round of golf instead....so, be careful....and make sure that the surgeon has the proper credentials......and ofcourse, training.....all the best...for good health.....and success.... Just make sure that whomever you choose to do the VSG---that the doctor is well trained and has a Post Graduate Fellowship in doing bariatric surgical procedures.......the surgeon that had has been doing a variety of gastric procedures for approx. 15 yrs...and he has a Fellowship( a surgical Fellowship of 3 yrs) training in bariatrics.....all the best for much success for good health.......!! -

Best wishes on your journey......I also thought of going to Mexico however, after a long and indepth review-- I decided NOT to go there and find someone in the New York City area that was very well trained....and had years of doing this procedure....and also had a well trained medical Fellowship in Post Graduate Surgical training.......I had to go through many months of testing on every level so that I could obtain clearance from the insurance company.....and for me,that was important to do since I have some medical issues already going into the surgery...... All the best....for Good health.....and much Success..... !! -

How di dyou come to choose this 'surgeon' ? I wish you every success and good health....in your journey.......?I was going to go to Mexico however, I decided to find a surgeon who was very well educated and well trained in the USA.....instead.....prior to my surgery,I had to have alot of evaluations: a series of blood tests, physical exam, a colonoscopy,an endoscopy, a cardiac evaluation, a pulmonary evaluation with an overnight sleep study to check for sleep apnia,a meeting with the nuticionist, a followup with the surgeon, a psychiatric evaluation,,,,,it was a long process with alot of evaluations......it took approx. 10 months to have these procedures before the surgeon would even do the VSG.....I was on puree foods and now,at 5 weeks post op...I am introducing some regular food...very slowly,,,,I hope that all goes well for you.....have you had any testing done ?What does the surgeon require in Mexico ? Have you met with your own physician for clearance ? Stay well and all the very best.......always...... R -
I had my surgery on July 24th at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC with Dr. Daniel Herron...... I tried everything under the sun to lose weight....however, I did not stay with psychotherapy when I should have tried that along with a trainer and a nutrisionist..... I have lost 40 pounds and still have a ways to go...it is not an easy decision.....it took me more than two years to try and do something about my weight.....I did not however, want to deal with why I gained so much weight in the first place..... now, I have to go through those minefields.....I was going to go to MExico and had a flight and surgeon chosen..... I am SO GLAD that I did not go to Mexico and to Dr. Gueillermo Alvarez for the procedure.....I know that in reading the many posts here...what some people say is that they had a good experience....I, on the other hand did some investigation and felt that he was not the surgeon for me.....I wanted to find someone with post graduate training in a bonafide fellowship post graduate program...... and not, show his resume that means nothing.....going to a weekend meeting and gathering afew cme points held in a nice vacation spot and sponsored by an american surigical society....was not enough.....to convince me to put my life in his hands.,,,my insurance did not pay for most of it but, I am working it out with the surgeons office....whatever you choose to do......I wish you the best of health and the best of luck.......all the best....R

Surgeons in houston

Hi...let me know what your thoughts are......? I have the proedure next week in NYC at Mount Sinai Hospital......I started the process in October,,,I found the whole team wonderful thus far.......initially, I explored going to Mexico however, after doing serious research on a particular 'surgeon' who advertises on this website...I decided with complete due diligence NOT to go there and to that 'surgeon' in Mexico.... IT is most important that when you search for a bariatric surgeon...... you look clearly at the surgeon's training and post graduate training and years of experience and a Fellowship( usually, takes two to three years) after residency.......wishing you all the very best....... Hi....so glad that you are doing great after 2 months post op..... Yes, Dr. D. Herron is the Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhatten....and he has a team of other surgeons......did you stay for two days or three days ?Did you explore other surgeons before you chose Mount Sinai ? I thought about going as a self pay paitent to Mexico......however, I am glad that I changed my mind....after doing research on the 'surgeon' in Mexico...I discovered terrible issues and..... did not have the surgery there......after reading certain posts.....there are some people that do go to Mexico and are happy about their decision.....when going to a foreign country ,there is no recourse at all....and that is important.... let me know how you are doing........ are you now able to eat some solid food without too many issues ? did the nutristionist help you in planning post op eating,etc....?all the best.....R -

I am having the VSG at the end of the month.......insurance just approved....it has been a long process...having it in New York City ...at Mount Sinai Hospital with Dr. Daniel Herron......I thought about going to Mexico however, I changed my mind after doing due diligence and decided that it was best to find a trained surgeon who had serious Post Graduate training and a Fellowship....the doctors in Mexico clearly, do not.....and there is no recourse...... wishing you all the best in your procedure and all the best for good health..... Hi...glad that you are feeling well and I wish you all the best...always......I will have my procedure at the end of the month at Mt. Sinai Hospital in MAnhatten......it has been a long road.....has anyone here had surgery with the team at Mt. Sinai.....especially, with Dr. Daniel Herron ? He seems to be a nice man and had many years of training and experience....at first,I thought of having the lap band procedure......however, after a conversation with him.....he indicated that there are issues with the lap band.......I thought that the lap band was less invasive and it could be removed......? All the best.....always....for success in the surgical procedures and good health post op....... R -
Has anyone ever used Dr. D. Herron from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City ? Awaiting approval from insurance......

As I mentioned, I was to have chosen a Dr. G.Alvarez in Piedras Negras,Mexico and I was all set to go there many months ago .however, after researching his bio and credentials and training,I decided not to have him do the VSG. I am in the forensic legal profession and I had to do due diligence-after reviewing his cv,I understood that this particular surgeon has clearly NOT had a Postgraduate Fellowship in bariatric surgery--and only, lists CME certificates given after three to four days at medical meetings at hotels sponsored by a variety of American and International organizations----attending a conference at lovely hotels for afew days and obtaining some CME credits are NOT the same as an actual Three Year Post Graduate Fellowship in Bariatric Surgical Training....as it is, there are so many things that can go wrong .even in the best surgeons hands....anywhere in the world....and yes ofcourse, even here in the USA.....should something go wrong...there clearly, is no recourse.and whom do you address ? Each country should have their own safeguards and unfortunately, Mexico does NOT....For those individuals who choose to go abroad...please check out the surgeon and the training and the facility.....there are no guarantees .....anywhere one chooses to have this procedure......making an informed and an educated decision is the way to approach this surgery....wishing you all every success for good health and a happy and easy recovery.......all the best.....to all......R

Hi...I was all set to go to Mexico( Piedras Negras-Dr. G. Alvarez) however, I decided to find an American surgeon instead. I reviewed his CV and his training and credentials and decided that he waas not the person for me to have the surgery done. If you are able to find a well trained bariatric surgeon in the USA-someone who has many years of training as well as a post graduate Fellowship and good credentials--that would be the best way to go. Do you have insurance ? It took me ten months to get the approval from my insurance carrier.......I will be having the procedure this summer in New York City. Make sure that whomever you choose, look into the medical training, post graduate training,(that takes several years and not afew weekends in many places) and that the person has had a fine and reputable education and post graduate education with years of experience...I wish you every success and lots of luck in good health....all the best.....
