Doing a liquid diet 9 mths post op? Is it helpful or useless?
VSG AJH replied to marfar7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've read several times over the last few years that there are some health benefits to liquid fasts from time to time. It can increase a sense of mental discipline, and it gives the stomach and intestines time to relax and restore. Will it affect your sleeve, encourage greater restriction, etc.? I genuinely have no idea. Could a healthy liquid/raw juice/ protein shake fast help you overcome carb/additive cravings? I think so, which is why I think some docs have patients do liquid fasts pre-op (to reduce intense, sometimes physically painful cravings post-op). I think as you decide what you need to do for yourself, you should research the benefits of liquid fasts in a general sense, rather than liquid fasts on relation to what if might do to or for your sleeve. -
There are a number of ongoing DFW threads in various locations on these boards. Wonder if everyone will eventually make their way here.

CJ -- Another thing that could be related is a Vitamin D deficiency. This time of year -- end of winter/first part of spring -- many suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, and a lack of Vitamin D from being cooped up for so long can contribute. Perhaps thing of boosting your Vitamin D supplement and getting all of that exercise outside in the sunlight.

"Friend's Online" -- The matter of an irritating erroneous apostrophe
VSG AJH posted a topic in Website Assistance & Suggestions
Hey Alex -- Small issue, really, but an irritating one. I normally log in via my iPhone, but when the Bariatric Pal app became nonfunctional and wouldn't allow me to log in after a phone upgrade, I had to pop onto the site here to change my password, etc. While on the website, I noticed the lower control bar and the "Friend's Online" indicator. This possessive implies that the "online" belongs to my friend. Is it possible to have this erroneous apostrophe removed? -
Sorry for the late reply -- the login on my phone wouldn't work. All up and running now! My weight this week was 197.1.

VSG AJH replied to rensterness's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Wow, how shocking! I'm glad they figured out there was an issue now when you're essentially well and not after some blockage and/or other type of complication, but wow! Wishing you well on your upcoming revision surgery and healing process. Please keep us updated. -
Hi Bea -- My weight for this week is 201.9. So close to Onederland. Maybe before my next weigh in? I can hardly believe it!!

I'm at 204.8 this week.

December 2013 Sleevers Come In!
VSG AJH replied to AtlantaRed's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I eat five times a day (9A, noon, 3P, 6P, and 9P), always 2-3 oz lean protein first. Sometimes I exchange one of those food intake opportunities for a Premier protein shake. -

At a loss bout not losing.
VSG AJH replied to TTC2U's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to eat through the day. Don't just down all your Protein first thing in the morning, then starve yourself for the rest of the day. Eating one or two meals in an entire day is screwed up the metabolism of many people here, and ultimately what got many of us to this obese position. Many doctors recommend three meals a day plus one or two Snacks as eating small portions every three hours or so helps keep blood sugar levels stable. I personally eat five times a day at 9A, noon, 3P, 6P, and 9P. -
December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

I just replied in detail about my caloric intake, but I wanted to reply to this "magical 75%" you mentioned. I'm eleven weeks out and 6 pounds away from 50% down. I think I'll make 50% before I see my surgeon for my three month post-op appointment. I'd love to keep losing this fast, but I'm not doing anything crazy to accomplish that. That said, I'm not really an "in moderation" eater, meaning I do not eat whatever I "want" in smaller portions. I am eating regular food, but I am making healthy choices. I've tried rice, bread, and crackers, but I don't eat them regularly as they make my stomach hurt and they make me want more rice, bread, and crackers. Though I haven't had an actual stall yet, the one week I lost a half pound and not more was the week I split a Valentine's Day dessert with my husband. A few bites of pudding was NOT worth that torture on the scale! The whole "everything in moderation" thing works for some people, but not for me. I'm an all-or-nothing girl. If I eat a little bit of sugar, I want to eat all the sugar! That doesn't mean I don't eat what my family eats, they're just eating healthier now, and I'm not eating all the things I serve them. -
December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

I've been eating 850-1000 calories per day spread across 5 meals typically. When I work out and burn a lot of calories, I might add in a 6th meal and eat some of those calories back, too. I average 85-90g protein per day, and have from day three post-op. I've lost consistently, and while there have been one or two weeks that I've lost just a little bit, I've not yet hit one technical stall in my eleven weeks since surgery. I also aim for no more than 60 carbs per day, and I usually land between 50-75. If I eat more carbs than that, I find myself intensely craving carbs, and that's just miserable. My doctor's office doesn't specify a calorie range, they just stress protein intake, and I found I took in about 10 calories per gram of protein. When I was about 4-5 weeks out, I asked my NUT if she thought I was taking in too many calories because I could see on here many people were taking in 400-500 calories daily. She said said that was true of many of her patients, but they were also only taking in 40-50g of protein or less. She said there's a correlation, and since I was losing quickly and consistently, I was in the right calorie range for my body. She said it was an individual thing, and that we would revisit my caloric intake if/when I started stalling out. At that point, she said, sometimes a decrease is needed, but sometimes an increase is needed. Trial and error.
