Sleeve to Bypass, NO NO NO?

Well I figured I would post an update, I have been officially converted from a sleeve to a bypass on Oct 31. The surgery went well however had to stay an extra night due to pain, but am doing great. I can say that it is the first time in a year that I have not had heartburn to deal with. It is so nice not to get heartburn when drinking water or taking my vitamins. I think that this may have been the right choice but we will defiantly see once I introduce real food again. I think that has been the hardest part that I have to go back to square one with liquid diet and progress through the stages but I am happy it is over with.

Sleeve to Bypass, NO NO NO?

No issues with insurance. The Dr. did however make me redo some qualifying items such as meeting with the NUT and a Psych Eval. The Dr. also did some additional testing, gastric emptying study, and tried conventional medicines, reglan and erythromycin first to speed the stomach emptying process to try to correct the issue. All failed but was documented and provided to the insurance to support the approval. Bile Reflux is a rare complication of the Sleeve that is not documented, however it may be corrected with medication first prior to taking a drastic route to have a revision surgery. I hope that all works out for you. Reach out if you have questions.

Sleeve to Bypass, NO NO NO?

I was sleeved last Oct 25th I can relate to your issues, I have terrible heartburn, reflux, and nausea. I originally though that it would go away but has only stayed the same and is worse at times. I have been following up with my doctor and it was determined after an endoscopy that I have Bile Reflux. The only believed to correct it is to have RNY. RNY will cause the bile to not be so close to the stomach and having RNY relieves the pressure that is in your stomach that can contribute to GERD or reflux. I am schedule for surgery Oct 31 to have a revision to RNY. I hope that this will be it for surgeries. I like the sleeve and it has done well with a total loss of 106lbs. I hate to get rid of it but need to have RNY done to prevent further issues.

    RNY OR SLEEVE?

Having had VSG - Sleeve surgery last Oct, I can say it has been a great tool to aid in losing weight. I am down 106 lbs to date. I agree with other posters that you will not have the dumping that is with RNY or the mal-absorption. I am scheduled to have a revision next month to RNY due to severe reflux with the Sleeve. The doctor and I are hoping that moving to an RNY will solve the reflux issue. As for a which way to choose, I can say the Sleeve is a very successful surgery for weight loss, but you do have to be diligent on what you eat. I can have days where I eat 500 cal or days if I am not careful that can exceed 2000 cal. As always any WLS you choose is only a tool; you have to change your mindset on how you eat and look at food.

    Bile Reflux/Heartburn

Doctor put me on 80mg Pepcid and Maloxx 2-4 time daily. I now have that in addtion to 10mg Reglan 3 times a day.
  7. I have not posted before, but have used this forum for much needed information in preparing for and after surgery. I was sleeved In October 2012 and am close to 6 months out. I have been having heartburn and acid reflux multiple times daily. I had an EGD today as a follow up to see if there were any issues. The doctor has found that I have bile reflux which when mixed with the acid in your stomach can cause acid reflux and heartburn. I was prescribed Reglan to help to control the bile, however I have seen that this medication has some possible adverse permanent side effects. I was also told that if it does not get under control that the only way to control it is to convert to a full bypass to put the bile lower in the intestinal track. I would like to know if any one has had this issue and if any medication has helped or have you had to convert your sleeve to full bypass. I like my sleeve and have done well - 63 lbs in 6 months. I have researched and found that this condition is rare. Any info, suggestions, or help would be great.
