    Hyperparathyroidism

I had my thyroid removed 3weeks before i was sleeved. During that surgery, they "peel" the parathyroids off the thyroid in order to leave them intact.....there are 4 of them, two each on the backs of each lobe of the thyroid. I guess they told you whether they will leave or remove your thyroid and how this will impact your need for calcium. That would be my biggest concern".. How will this impact my calcium levels, bone strength, etc. My surgery was done as out patient and two days later drove 12 hours straight to be with my family for christmas. Surgery began at 11 and i was released about 4. I had a very bruised neck so keep it iced and i also had like a very weak monotone voice for about 2 months. The bruising started just under my chin, was about 6inches wide and ran half way down my chest. The nerves that control your vocal chords run across the thyroid. During the surgery, the nerves are stretched and traumatized, resulting in the voice issues. Hope this helps with knowing a little better what to expect. Good luck.

Why can't I get this vitamin thing right?

I spent a fortune on vitamins and ended up with flintstone complete chewables as well... The very one my nut suggested! I had some off brand chewables, then some from bariatric advantage suggested on this site and simply could not make myself take them.... And im pretty tough! Ive settled in nicely with fred and barney!

So glad you kept your priorities straight!

    Preop diet

Meat, veggies and shakes. They are not free, but they are not carbs or crap. If you have to do clear liquids, add protein to broth or have an extra shake. Have lots of hot tea and water. Keep the protein up to help with hunger. I figured it was better to have an extra shake rather than blow it having a carby food that would negatively impact my liver and thus... My surgery. A huge piece of this is just sucking it up and doing the thins that we need to do. Hang in there. Best of luck.

    I hate to admit it

Hey amy...sorry things are a bit tough for you right now. Can you figure out some small things to change to help a little until youre more solid with your eating? Can someone maybe swing by in the evening to get the kids clothes laid out for the next day? Can you manage to get down part of a prepared shake first thing in the morning to get some nourishment going? Its gotta be tough having so much on your plate so soon after surgery and i am really sorry for that. As far as your hypoglycemia, try to stick with gatorade and not resort to a sugary fruit juice so your sugar wont spike then crash. My doc swithed me from g2 to straight gatorade for that one week until my energy leveled out. Above all, be kind to yourself. You dont have to do it perfectly. Just do what you can and add to it the next day. Hope things improve soon. Hopefully someone else will have some ideas too and you can choose what you think will work best. Take care.
  9. Would you settle for a cat? I really hate the neighbors cat and would gladly pay shipping!

    llAnd so it begins...

Good luck tomorrow! I only lurked for months before posting. I read and learned so much and found even more to research on my own. You have a wealth of knowledge and support right here at your finger tips! Stay in touch and let us know how tomorrow goes.
  11. Hey amy! I slept like 9 hours every night but still needed a nap for the first two weeks. Week three i was low on carbs, nearly teary because of no energy, so added g2 to increase from 30 to 50 and felt much better. I just needed to do that a week or so till i was got on some food. Went back to work on week 4 and have been fine since. I was never a napper, but i think the anethestic and the energy your body needs to heal your big internal wound, just saps you for a couple of weeks. It will get better. Youll feel better plus still be riding that sleeve thrill wave before you know it. You might want to think about additional carbs too. Good luck amy!

    Pain

In my 6+ months on this site reading and researching this process the one very clear message i have heard is that everyones experience is different- doctors programs, surgery, pain, gas, food stages, loss, etc etc. you cannot compare yourself to others. If you need to revisit your doc or call, then do so. You know how you respond to pain so compare this experience to your other experiences. I know you want to be up and about and further down the road to activity and loss, but your body needs time to recover and you just have to hang in tthere until it does. I tried to do just a tiny bit more each day and look for the small improvements. Hopefully you have the time off work and dont have to go back too soon so you can get to know your new stomach and feel more comfortable physically. I do hope you feel better very soon.

    preop dieting

No carbs.. Oatmeal and apple sauce are carbs. Youll get a few carbs in shakes, but try to remember liver shrinkage is the goal. Youll get that with low carb and the high protein keeps you from being hungry. Good luck! Im sure you will do well.
  15. No prob.. I never mean to be not nice but am pretty matter of fact. I just want everyone to be successful so really push them to know exactly what to expect. Personally, i am 60, have been above 200 since high school and was just sleeved. Im a total carb addict! Brown rice, Pasta, bread... All were my faves! Im down 68 pounds with both pre op and post op losses. I have to watch the clock to remind myself to have a little Protein snack mid morning and mid afternoon..cheese stick or 3 oz yogurt.. I have maybe 12 oz tops..usually less...of food a day along with my tea Water and one shake. No no desire for food. I do feel a little empty around dinner time, but i think its an old habit dying hard...i used to get home from work and start stuffing myself...now i can barely get in 1.5 oz of salmon for my dinner! Other than my kids and grandkids, this is truly the most exciting adventure of my life! Best wishes!

    preop diet

I did not add anything extra as far as food options, but if i was hungry id do a big cup of hot tea.. If that didnt work, id go for another shake. I decided an extra shake was better than a bunch of really bad carbs. So maybe go with a cup of hot tea, an ice pack on the head and then add a shake if all else fails. Hang in there. What you are doing now increases the chances for a successful surgery and less trauma to your liver. Most say the withdrawal only lasts a few days. Hope thats true for you too!

    Diarrhea! CHA CHA CHA!

Color might be a better indicator. Also, just wanted to mention that i was fine..no diarrhea EXCEPT with one powdered Protein ...vanilla ON whey isolate from costco. All the other powders and premixes were fine... Seriously had no issues with 100 oz or more of broth, tea, Water, shakes and popsicles. I could drink that one shake and within 30 min i was racing to the rest room. Good luck for working it out!

  21. Id like to encourage you to research the procedure and how it works to help with weight loss. I believe that knowing everything about it will help you be more successful with initial loss and long term success. People here are truly super, but you really need to read and learn what this is all about.
