  1. You might also think about trying lactose free milk. Some people develop a lactose intolerance post surgery. I have a definite reaction to my shake powder mixed with 1% milk, but not the milk mixed with unjury chicken broth or nectar fuzzy navel so i think it is the powder, not the milk. It is like it is too rich. No prob with premixed shakes either so hoping it is not a lactose intolerance developing. I am, however, picking up lactaid milk today and switch out for a few days to test it.

    how do you start

When i was 57, i lost a good amount of weight with diet and exercise. I had a core workout tape i liked and then walked on my treadmill. I started with only 15 min because i was not really into it at all. Each few days i would add 5 minutes until i got to a mile, then 2 miles. One day i thought..hum... I bet i could run maybe 15 seconds... So every few minutes i would break into a run for those 15 seconds. This went on for quite a bit because i still was at about 225 or so so had confidence that i could really run for a longer period of time. I finally realized it was not that hard to run since your stride lengthens so i gave a quarter mile a go... And boom... Started doing quarter mile runs and quarter mile walks for a week or so then bumped to half mile walk half mile run and then running the full two miles. Im sure true runners would call my pitiful run a jog, not sure how fast you go to call it a run or if it depends on stride length. Bottom line though... It was all about confidence and taking time to build up to the run phase. I do plan to begin the c25k program this time once i am cleared to do more than just walk (already doing at least a mile a day or more at 12 days out) and i plan to order a running book so that i learn more about form, the foot strike, etc. i also need new shoes, but from experience, know my foot size decreases with weight lose so i hate to get new shoes only to have them get too big in a short amount of time. Knowing you can run two miles or more is just the best. Self esteem soars. So yep, i am now 60, but know i will be back running soon. I want to feel that pride and see the amazing changes in my body. Oh yeah... When walking, i always did face and neck exercises, as well as when i was driving. I swear it made a difference especially in my neck. Good luck Grace. I wish you the best.

I have been significantly overweight since childhood so have no idea what i will look like as a normal weight person. I am expecting a face full of wrinkles but i dont care! Give me a body that can get in a kayak or hike without feeling like death is emminent and i will be a happy camper!

    Driving

Came home from hospital after 1.5 days and drove next day with no muscle or pain issues. You are just not supposed to drive until you are off narcotics, which i stopped taking after the day of surgery.
  8. Decaf tea and coffe were on my two week post op plan, but unfortunately... Since surgery, the coffee tastes awful! I have noticed that many flavors have intensified. I thought it was the horrid hospital jello, but found out that most flavorings are way too strong. I was a huge coffee lover pre op and have been completely disgusted the two times i tried it. I had maybe 2 oz and then dumped the rest! I so hope this disgust extends to simple carbs !

    Hypothyroidism and Protein Drinks?

My thyroid was removed so i am on a high dose of synthroid. My endocrinologist and surgeon both said to take it on an empty stomach and wait 30-60 min before ingesting anything. You are not supposed to have calcium or citrus with it or it is not absorbed. I take mine as soon as i wake up. I put the two pillsout pn the counter before bed so they re ready to pop in my mouth. I have a good 30 minutes under my belt by the time i use the rr, brush my teeth, get the bed made, get downstairs, potty the dog and get a cup of tea made. I have also taken it during the night ..like 2 am..., but since surgery, am sleeping so well that does not always work now.

    newbie needs Help

During the two weeks of preop clear fluids, i went ahead and used the two extras to curb my appetite. If i got hungry, or "thought" i was, it was better to have a shake than something i was not supposed to have. Now than i am preop but still on fluids, i use the plan the poster before me uses. I do 3 main meal shakes of 30 Protein isolate grams and fill in with other fluids to meet my Fluid goal. I also think is is a good plan because it will lead nicely into eating 3 main meals of food once i am cleared for food, rather than grazing. Good luck.

    Wedding anniversary.

How very touching. I know the usual plan needs to be modified for now, but why not do something really special together and use the time to plan a celebration for down the road...or start a new non-food tradition! You should be happy on such a wonderful occassion! You have beat the odds so celebrate!
