How do you not go broke?

    Goodwill
  2. My surgeon told me to be off of shakes by Jan 1. I was sleeved on Sept. 26. Since I have been on whole food I am having a lot of issues of getting enough protein. I have no appetite at all at 14 weeks out. I'm not complaining one bit, but it is a challenge and I know that I am not getting in the 45-50 g a day that I need to. I'm not going to feel guilty or beat myself up. I just have to try to eat protein first. That doesn't always happen. Sometimes I don't want something that dense and just feel like yogurt or I want to have a taste of some salad. It's ok. No worries. I doubt that thin people get in adequate protein every day either.
  3. I have gotten them from GNC and online. I always keep them in my car since I travel so much. They are great "go to" protein.

Why do we candy coat everything?

I guess I'll just put it out there. I am more academic than emotional and have lost a lot of patience with this political correctness or uber editing of comments in fear of offending someone. People who are easily offended are going to be offended by something no matter what. Some want to be handled with pearly white kid gloves with soft fabric. This dilutes some of the passion of the human experience. If you only want to hear what pleases you and supports your point of view, then you probably need to grow up. We are all much more complex than that. I am not easily offended. I want to hear the sinew, guts and soul of something, not the edited, whitewashed, watered down and overall diluted version. I respect those who have the guts to damn the torpedoes and put themselves out there. If you are so fragile that you cry when you touch the wings of a moth and some dust vaporizes, then you and I are probably not going to be able to have a very meaningful interaction. If you have not elected to take advantage of resources and advice provided by your surgeon, NUT, or the vast information available on the internet, then I am not interested in communicating with you. Personal responsibility is part of adulthood. With that said, I am not perfect. I don't expect anyone else to be. But I don't want to hear whining nor see questions about very obvious information that can be easily researched by a 30 second web search. I am, and we all are, processing through a project of "self" where accountability and information are important. Anyone who wants support in being less accountable or making excuses are not interesting nor a good investment in my time. Do what you want. I really don't care. If your questions or feelings are informed and sincere, then that is different. Some just don't want to feel like they are alone in their experience and need validation for their current feelings. You want to send me to your banned list? I couldn't care less. I do not ever need outside validation from another person. That is the level of "self actualization" on Maslow's Hierarch of Needs.

    Some people here are meanies

It may really depend on what your definition of a meanie is. I suppose we each have different sore spots and buttons that get pushed. And I agree with clk .... when you come here on a regular basis for months and every day there are multiple new posts about the same things over and over and over, many asking for support or feel good comments on non-compliance, then it can be irritating. I am not very sensitive to comments from people I don't know and who don't know me personally so I have seen very, very few comments that I would classify as mean. People vent, are frustrated, are scared, are depressed, are angry, are joyful, excited, curious, in pain, etc.... Are some of these feelings better or worse than others? No. Should people spend a lot of time pondering every word they write here for how others might interpret them? No. It is an open, public forum. We aren't substitutes for family members, best friends, counselors, nutritionists nor doctors. We are just a large collection of people with a common interest in a specific surgical procedure and the academic and emotional aspects of it. Some of us are more academic, some are more emotional. Some are more mature, some are less mature. We are a great big interconnected population of our own human experiences. When you think of the forum like that, you may be less hyper sensitive to anything anyone says here. Also ..I laugh at myself often, just as I laugh inside at some of the comments. Don't lose your sense of humor.
  7. Greatest thing for my health that I've ever done. There is not a single thing about the amputated part of my stomach that I miss. Good riddance fundus.

Can I See Meals/portion Sizes Please?

I can only speak from my own experience but I haven't thrown up either in 14 weeks. I don't really eat that slowly, but I am aware of how much I'm eating. I don't measure anything. I just pay attention to how the food feels. I have only felt like I ate too much a few times. Sometimes I can eat more than other times, but usually its a very few bites and then its over. This has been an adjustment because even when something is tasting especially delicious, I can't have much of it at all.

    Can I Slap You Now?

Everyone has a reason for their choice, but I don't share my business. It is personal and I couldn't care less for anyone's opinion about what I elect do do or why I elected to do it. I don't lie and I'm not hiding anything, I just don't share my personal business. I wouldn't tell a salesperson that the reason why I am looking for a certain size panties is because I lost weight from vsg. Not their business. I don't suggest that someone should agree with my approach because a lot of people are helped when someone who has had bariatric surgery shares their experience and can encourage others to seek similar help if they need it. It depends on your personality, your goals and your preferences. If you are going to willingly disclose your surgery with everyone, then be prepared for any and every reaction.

    when to exercise?

I started exercising at one week....walking. My surgeon insisted on it. I found that being very active almost immediately helped me to recover very fast. Working out the soreness by keeping your body active on a regular basis works. The more sedentary you are, the more sore you will probably be.

  13. FallenAngel has some great suggestions. I have a few "go to" places now for specific choices. Panera - low fat chicken noodle soup McDonald's - yogurt parfait Wendy's - 1/2 grilled chicken salad with no dressing any Japanese - edamame and sashimi any Vietnamese - fresh (not fried, in the almost transparent rice wrap) spring roll with shrimp and veggies I have also learned the word "dry" for food prep when ordering. This means that you would like your fish, chicken or vegetables cooked with little or no oil or fat.

    Bowel Movement or Lack of

This is very typical. There isn't enough solid material in your stomach to pass much of anything. It was 10 days post op before I had a bm. I read recently from another member here that 12 days had passed. Some take Mirilax, others eat chia seeds, some take stool softener. You may be too early out to take some things so please discuss this with your surgeon or NUT. I have never been very regular and it is even worse now. I hadn't had a bm since before Christmas and have had to taken Exlax for 3 days straight before I had results.
  15. I have had a few rounds of depression since surgery 14 weeks ago. It is getting much better now. If you haven't had many sunny days there in the past few weeks, you may also suffer from seasonal depression. Sunlight helps those with that problem. Its emotional and probably chemical, too..so it isn't something that you can just snap out of. Though you will often read that your attitude is 100% up to you and that you must decide to be happy, that is not so easy when you are in a real funk. Have you thought about starting a blog? There are so many military spouses that would appreciate your perspective and I would bet that there is an unconnected community of them who are spouses at home that have had bariatric surgery. It would be a unique opportunity and it may help for you to write out your feelings and share them. It may help others, too.
  16. I eat out all of the time. Especially when I'm out of town for work or on the road. After all of the zillion diet programs I've been on, I know the nutritional information and can estimate calories. I also pre-load my mind with information by reading nutritional information from restaurant websites to see what their better choices are. If I do decide to indulge a little bit and order something that is not quite as heathy, I eat very little and balance it out with steamed veggies or am aware of what I eat at other meals of the day. I don't consider it a lifestyle of denial and diet food. It is all about balance and awareness.

    Crap I forgot to eat

I actually, personally, don't feel that this is a problem. I have thin friends who do this. Sometimes I actually know it is "time" to eat but I'm really not hungry, so I don't eat then. One of the things my NUT told me was that we (obese) patients have lost touch with our bodies signals. We often eat because it is time to eat and not because our bodies are telling us that it is hungry. I love it. It is a big gift. A few times I have gone an entire day without eating until a very small meal for supper. At other times I have not been hungry, but ate a bite or two of protein just to keep me going. I don't not eat all of the time, but I'm learning to rebalance nutrition with my bodies signals. This is not an endorsement for anyone to not eat or skip meals. I'm just sharing my current experiences.

    True Or False

Cooking With Protein powder I have recently had many comments on various youtube vidoes I have posted concerning protein powder and cooking with it. There are various sites that will claim that by cooking with protein powder, the powder will lose some of its nutritional value. I had read the research, but thought I would contact a protein powder company just to see their response. Thank you for contacting us, but no worries on cooking with protein powder, because of the quality of the protein. You will still retain full nutritional value, and as far as slowing on the digestion process, it is minimal. whey protein powder contains virtually all non-denatured protein. However, exposing protein to extreme temperature (hot or cold) will denature the protein to a certain degree. For example, heating whey protein to temperatures above 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) results in denaturation. For this reason, cooking or baking with DP denatures the protein. In addition, repeated freezing and thawing of a protein solution can result in deanaturation, but simply exposing the powder to low temperatures does not cause denaturation. This does not mean that the amount of the protein is diminished. Denaturation can affect biological value (bioavilability) and may slow the digestion and absorption of the protein. Regardless, denatured protein still retains full nutritional value with regard to amino acid composition. And whey protein powder is a good source of all essential and non-essential amino acids; therefore, even if it is denatured, it is still a very high quality protein source. Also, all Proteins are denatured when cooked (e.g., eggs, meat, soy, etc.). Hope this helps and we wish you all the best. http://leanbodiescon...protein-powder/

    When does eating stop hurting?

I'm 3 month out. Eating doesn't hurt me but it is often uncomfortable or feels weird. I actually don't mind the trade off if stays that way. But it shouldn't hurt. Are you swallowing air maybe? That might cause discomfort.

    Clothes dont fit!

That's the whole vanity sizing thing. I am wearing size 16 pants. Yesterday I tried on 2 dresses from the back of my closet. They are both size 12 and too big. My pair of black velvet jeans from 9 years ago are a size 14 and they are too tight. I have noticed that jeans are often sized differently from other pants.

Am I ever going to be normal?

I'm moving into my 14th week and I eat out all of the time. I eat anything I want. I make good food choices most of the time, so I don't worry if I have a cookie every once in a while, or I put a little butter on my sweet potato when I have one. But even with that said, I get in around 500-600 calories a day. The amount of food I can eat is so small that I really can't eat more and I really don't want to.

    Losing breast weight

I'm down over 50lbs and have had very little change in my cup size in 13 weeks. I'm sure I'll see a difference happen during the next 50 lbs.
