Post Op September Sleevers, Roll Call

I really do avoid sugar and almost never crave it anymore. I would rather have cheese any day. It may have been that I was having coffee at work and I don't usually do that either and it triggered my sweet tooth. Does sugar bother me? I thought that is what made me sick when I tried creme brulee at 4 weeks and later chocolate cheesecake at Thanksgiving and later chess pie at Christmas. I told my doctor about it and he laughed and said that it wasn't so much sugar as it was fat. That fat is really toxic to us in any volume and especially if it is the wrong kind of fat. I didn't eat the mini candy bars all at once. There was a period of time between them, so that may have made a difference. And they weren't the fun size, these are the minis. I tried the Snickers, the Kit Kat and Twix. Last night I gave my SO a king cake. He had never had one before and loved it. I took one small bite from the edge and there is no way I would have taken another. It was too rich and too sweet. I just knew it would end up making me sick.

    Protein Supplement Critiques

I don't really know why he is so opposed to protein supplements but my surgeon is a scary man ... meaning he is very no-nonsense and tough love. There are very few people on this planet that can intimidate me in any way because I am naturally very assertive, but my bariatric doctor has my attention. It may be respect, but I listen to him very carefully. That doesn't mean I won't ever drink one again, but I won't be dependent on them again. There also may be some research studies that they are aware of that have shown some measurable outcome with the continued use of protein supplements.

    Drinking Alcohol

Drinking alcohol also throws you out of ketosis. I'm doing a personal study on this with the level of ketosis and time passed post-alcohol using ketone strips.
  4. I have wondered why the same scale is used for both genders. When I think of my best friend who is 5'6" and weighs around 135, she looks very healthy and slim, not skinny. When my mother was older she was 5'4" and 125 and still had a belly but looked healthy. I guess some norms change, too ...as far as what generations find more attractive or healthy or acceptable. I remember when I first started seeing muffin tops. It made no sense to me. My generation would not have done that at all.

feel like I'm eating too much!

Exactly that. Email or call your doctor and explain what you ate and your concern. NOBODY here.. NONE of our experiences nor advice is a good substitute for a conversation with your doctor.

    Struggling in hotel room

I stay in hotel rooms all of the time due to work travel. I often get out in my car and explore the area. It can be very interesting. There are historical places just about everywhere you go. You may want to develop a new hobby and take photos to submit to Wikimedia.

feel like I'm eating too much!

From my experience at that same stage, it sounds like a great deal of food. The nerves in your stomach are still in shock and your tissue is still swollen. But everyone is different and one day you might be able to eat more than others.

    Yuck!

Yes, it does. So does the Cookies and cream. Even with Water as the mix.

Post Op September Sleevers, Roll Call

In 1.5 days I had 5 mini candy bars which are approximately 50 calories each. That is 250 pointless, but tasty, calories. I ate those and was really satisfied by them. That is SO different from before when I looked forward to the holiday season when there was a constant rotation of seasonally themed fresh candy in large multi-bags. It was not unusual for me to buy one or more $8-$12 bags of mixed chocolate and eat it all by myself. That along with the other weekly chocolate candy stash that was in perpetual rotation. Maybe I wasn't as bad as before. I just fear old habits. Sometimes I think that this success should be savored because it is temporary. The mental part of this journey or life project may never go away.
  10. I know I'm still crashing this thread being 5'3", but at 3.5 months out and 163lbs, I know this is still wayyyy too big. I'm sticking with my goal of 115 lbs for now and seeing how that goes.

    Drinking Alcohol

I had a girls wine trip to Sonoma and Napa that was planned way before I knew about my surgery date...nonrefundable plane and hotel tickets. So I had wine at 5 weeks out. Burned like hell the first tasting. I tried again the next day and didn't feel so great then either. Often I would just enjoy the scenery and atmosphere while my friends bounced from winery to winery tasting events. Since then I've taken a few cautious sips of beer and decided that my decision to forgo all carbonated beverages from now on was a wise decision. (This coming from a former craft beer lover.) Now I had diet cranberry and vodka sometimes. Its ok, but really not necessary to have fun.

    Yuck!

Protein drinks aren't the best thing I've ever had either, but it isn't forever. I just sucked it up and drank them. Adding ice in the blender with them helps. I always used just Water with them. Sometimes I would drink a Muscle Milk Light or an EAS Advantage ready made shake. They are convenient.

Post Op September Sleevers, Roll Call

Yesterday after lunch and today have not been my better days. I had two mini candy bars out of my boss's candy bowl on his desk. Went out to eat Indian food and hurt myself, even though I really had a fairly small volume of food. It may have been the bismati saffron rice that did me in. I never eat rice anymore. I didn't throw up but was very uncomfortable for quite a while. Then today I had 3 mini candy bars from my boss's candy dish. I had a reasonably small healthy breakfast and part of a fat free yogurt for lunch, but grazed on pita chips through the day. For supper I had about 1/4 of a cup of leftovers from the Indian food. If it even matters, this came after a week and a half of eating less than usual and some days eating almost nothing at all because I had a -0 appetite. 3.5 months out and still working through so many things.
  14. That may have been my problem. I was attempting to eat some of the white roughage too and my sleeve was NOT happy with that fiberous stuff.

How do you not go broke?

I just discovered a store called Gordman's. http://www.gordmans.com/ I had never heard of one but saw one the other day when I was out of town and walked through. LOTS of name brand items and seasonal things at very discounted prices.
  16. I'm 3.5 months out and tried my first orange this week. I cut it in fourths and ate one segment and had to stop. It wasn't going well. My surgeon cleared me for salad and fruit at 12 weeks.
  17. When your surgeon clears you to eat them.

    Uh Oh....I'm suddenly STARVING

Your very early and will have periodic sensations of hunger at first. They decline a lot for most of us after several weeks.

    Uh Oh....I'm suddenly STARVING

Are you about to start your period? Happens to me every time.
  21. So I've been skipping through the daisies for the past few weeks. I have been very fortunate outside of the typical things just about everyone experiences (periodic hunger, periodic blues, hair loss, stalls, gas, etc.). I didn't mind drinking the shakes when that is what I was supposed to do (even if I didn't like the taste). I haven't had any issues with food. I travel a lot and eat out all of the time and have posted a lot of nutritional information and some "go to" items that I prefer from various restaurants in different threads. I eat Vietnamese, Indian, seafood, Soups, vegetarian options, meats with no problems. But tonight I have had a totally new experience and I'm laughing at myself about it. I really thought that, at 14 weeks, I was in the clear for a lot of things because I have been doing so well. Instead of eating out YET AGAIN while working out of town, I decided to go to a Whole Foods grocery. For those of you who do not have one nearby: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/whole-foods-market All of their produce, cheeses, meats, and zillions of organic food items, crazy variety of yogurts, prepared foods and other products can really entice you. I was drawn to the amazing salad bar. I picked up a small container and proceded to fill it with tiny bits of red cabbage, edamame, couscous, feta cheese, chickpeas, cucumbers, tofu, beets, and sprinkled quinoa over the top for some extra Protein. I also picked up a small container of wild caught salmon salad that had celery, dill and very little (almost 0) mayonnaise. No, I didn't throw up, but I am totally cleaned out from stem to stern. It wasn't holiday candy, or restaurant food that did me in. It wasn't dairy or bread. It was healthy foods from a health food store. I'm guessing Fiber? I'm irregular anyway, so this was actually a blessing in disguise, kinda.... I'm thinking back on the whole ...."introduce new foods slowly" idea. Yup. There is a reason for that recommendation. Tomorrow's lunch - Greek yogurt.

    Husband's Sweet Words

My SO says ...OOOOO! Skinny winny!!!! Usually when I'm wearing something not so baggy. Its silly and it makes me smile.
  23. This thread has been very eye opening for me. At 5'3" my goal weight is 115 lbs. I don't know what that will look like, but I'm halfway there from my pre-op weight. Right now I weigh 163 and am just under "obese" and am now classified at the high end of "overweight" on a BMI chart. These weights that the 5'4" and 5'5' members are giving sound really high to me. Yes, I know everyone is different and don't carry their weight the same way, have different builds, etc. Still, this is really interesting and intrigues me. I'm not judging anyone at all. Its just that my perceptions have been jostled and I am pondering a few things, especially how I personally view what I think would be healthy or not healthy for me.

    Caffeine Quiz...test your smarts

I missed that one too. I thought that since most people actually have withdrawal headaches when they quit caffeine cold turkey, that it would fall under the classification of addictive.

    Caffeine Quiz...test your smarts

I had a disappointing 62. I am most surprised that the survey days caffeine does not have a diuretic effect on regular users and it did not mention calcium leaching.
