It's like a 3 year waiting period here, no thanks!

I'm sure the cost of the hospital is a big part of it, and even within the same city there are more expensive hospitals and less expensive ones.

So I'm 2 months post op and some days I feel so normal that I forget that I've been sleeved. Case in point, last night. I spied some leftover chop suey in the fridge and I ate about 3 bites of it, but quickly. Didn't feel so well after that, it felt heavy in my chest. So since I'm so brilliant I decided to drink some water to help the food go down right. A few minutes later, I coughed, and all this beef flavored brown water came spurting out of my nose and mouth, my husband was quite revolted I'm pretty sure I'm never having sex again. Learn from my mistakes!

Need updated Mexican surgeon 2013 prices.
julielle replied to coexist23's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
In October Dr Ponce's rate was 5000 under 50 BMI, 5500$ if you were over 50 BMI. He may have increased in January. Edit: Unless i'm crazy. I could have sworn I paid 5000$ but maybe it was 5500$. I just threw out the receipt for the cashier's cheque yestrday too! -
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Bayside, the rooms were very comfortable, the price was good, the restaurant on site had a good tortilla soup broth (I had to ask them to strain it). Oh and free shuttle to the airport, it's only 1 mile from the airport so it's quick.

Just Got Thrown for a Loop
julielle replied to icon23's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I don't need any follow up care for the first 3 months. My first follow up care per my WL surgeon was to get blood work done at 3 months. I'm 8 weeks post op now and still haven't seen any doctors since I left Mexico. -
I was too big for my seat on United flying to surgery and back. I bought a seatbelt extender on Ebay so I wouldn't have to embarass myself by asking the flight attendant for one. To me it was worth the price to know that I didn't have to worry about that!

I lived a big part of my life as if every day was a food funeral, so I think by the time I actually booked the surgery it was just relief, so I didn't do one. HOWEVER. My surgery was originally supposed to be at the end of October and on the day of surgery my flight was cancelled and I couldn't get to Mexico due to Sandy. On THAT day, after starving myself on yogurt for 3 days combined with the HUGE disappointment of not having surgery that day, I did say screw it and ate some bad stuff. And it wasn't even GOOD bad stuff, it was DENNY's people. UGH. It was the closest thing to the airport and I was huuungry.

At least you can rest easy knowing it was human error on the part of the coordinator and not you getting scammed -
Discrepency in cost of surgery
julielle replied to #Redy4chg.org's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Maybe have someone else call and ask for the price of a sleeve and see what they say to a "stranger"? -
I would just make sure that the name on the prescription med matches your ID and you should be OK.

Don't worry about the connections, I've flown many times but unless it's airports that I go to often I don't usually remember the layouts, or I go to airports that are completely new. I've never gotten lost, they mark it really well, they assume that a lot of people getting off the plane are new to the airport. It's always easiest when you don't have to switch terminals, but even if you have to switch terminals it's easy to do, just takes more time. I'd allow yourself an hour for layovers just so you're not stressed about it, it SUCKS to cut it short with a short layover, you'll be running through the airport, and any delay on your first flight will make you a nervous wreck. If you do have to switch terminals there will usually be signs, such as tram to terminal C at gate A-23 or something like that. Or "Bus to terminal B at gate C-23". Oh and recheck your departure gate on the monitors, I've had it happen several times that the gate written on the ticket was not the same as the one written on the monitors, the monitors have the most updated information so follow that. I don't like flying, the seats are tiny and ugh, for ME take off and landing sucks because I feel such pressure in my ears. Since you don't know if this will be a problem for you or not, I highly recommend you buy a pair of Earplanes prior to the trip since those help lessen the pain if your ears are sensitive to the pressure. You can also check with your surgeon and see if you can take a decongestant prior to the flight, that helps too. I took Benadryl and it helped. Chewing gum during take off and landing can also help. An aisle seat for me is better because I don't want to be stuck by the window and have to ask the person or people next to me to get up if I want to stretch my legs. At least in the aisle you can get up whenever you want. The annoying part about the aisle: If you have a window seat person that wants to get up 5 times during the flight For the security, you need to have all your liquids in one gallon ziplock bag, and take that out of your carry on before scanning it. You also have to remove your shoes so slip on shoes may be easier, my husband wears running shoes and I'm always done way before him! Oh and when they tell you to remove everything from your pockets, remove EVERYTHING. I had a kleenex in there and it set off the machine

Congrats! WW never worked for me unfortunately, I was always starving... low fat foods just don't fill me up, I do much better on just meat + veggies. I guess WW would have worked for me if I had cut out all pasta/bread/potatoes/sugars!

Diamondeyed, I've never really believed in that "one golden chance" rule that people talk about, I lost as much on my subsequent attempts as I did the first time, I always averaged about 2.5 pounds a week on Atkins. I just couldn't stick with it... I do believe in low carb though! But I still love carbs. Argh.

Yeah, I went from 267 to 167, and I think once my brain went WOOHOO 100 pounds! That's when I kind of loosened the reigns. I was going on a cruise so that was my incentive to lose the weight, I had a year to prepare so I did Atkins. Worked well for me. BUT after the cruise I got pregnant, and then I gained all the weight back. Once I realized how QUICKLY those 100 pounds came back, I could never again stick to Atkins for more than a month, every time I figured "Why bother, I'll just lose the weight and gain it back again so I might as well eat french fries". Bleh.

Eating After Being Sleeved
julielle replied to tami88's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I'm only 4 weeks out but here's yesterday for me: 1 Protein shake for Breakfast (30g of protein - Costco's Premier Nutrition in chocolate, the yummiest I've found so far!) 160 cals lunch was 1/4 cup taco meat, a small amount of low fat cheddar melted on it and about a tablespoon of fat free sour cream (to keep the meat moist). That was 122 cals and 16g protein. Dinner: veggie Soup (I probably should have added some unflavored Protein powder here but I didn't think of it) 32 calories 1 protein. 2 slices of deli ham: 30 cals 7 protein Laughing cow light: 1 wedge (25 cals 2 protein) I smeared this on the deli ham and rolled it up Snack: Babybel light cheese 50 cals 6 protein 2 slices of deli chicken breast meat: 30 cals 5 protein Total: 67 protein and 449 calories. Also about 48 oz of crystal light + soup + Protein Shake for hydration, and random trips to the faucet for plain Water. -
I lost 100 pounds pre pregnancy and my skin was fine, arms were fine, thighs were fine. Then two pregnancies, and my belly is full of stretch marks, my arms just have a ton of droopy skin, and my thighs are horrific. No matter how quickly or how slowly I lose, this skin is not snapping back. Plastic surgery will be the only way to get rid of it.

I think right now price has something to do with it, there are other surgeons who are cheaper so they're the more popular picks. Also as was said on the other thread, the fact that he doesn't speak much english is probably a factor for some people. I'm very satisfied with my surgery experience with Dr Ponce.

Cheated On My Liquid Pre-Op Diet!
julielle replied to littlehope126's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
You need to tell your doctor that you had food the day before your surgery, because from what I'm told your risk of complications will be greater. He needs to be aware. -
Oh man I would pay the 55$ to NOT have to share a room, no way I would want to share with a stranger. I had my husband with me but if I were alone I would have refused to be with someone else. I'm down 22 pounds since my Nov 8th surgery with PDL. I'm happy with my results, will see how this month goes!

How Much Tip And Spending $?
julielle replied to amytug's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
We took about 160. But don't bring 20 dollar bills, nobody in Tijuana will have change for it. Even the hotel really didn't want to give us change for it. We should have brought most of it in 1s and 5s. Save the 20s if you go shopping at the touristy stores, there they'll take them but then again, everything in the store costs a lot more money than anywhere else too. -
I booked it in Mexico because I figured I'd save the price of the surgery over the next 3 years just by not eating junk food and fast food all the time. Plus I'll have the benefits of the surgery now instead of then. And I didn't have to jump through any hoops, I contacted my coordinator, and I could have had surgery the next week if I wanted to (I had to wait 3 weeks to get affordable flights).

10 years! Wow, last year I looked into it and it was 3 years, it's gone up 7 years in less than a year?
