    Women and Weights...

that's what my trainer has done with me- I've slowly built up the weight but am not bulky by any means- just toned. The more lean muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn so doing some weight/resistance exercise is a good thing! don't worry- you won't turn into the hulk!

    port pain when exercising

even one year out I'll occasionally have a twinge at my port site if my trainer has me doing something with my upper abs, but its brief and goes away quickly

    Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

I just restarted- I was having problems with my left foot- thought I had a fracture or something wonky going on- turns out I was wearing shoes that were totally wrong for me- I supinate (foot rolls outward) instead of pronate (like most people- foot rolls in) and was wearing shoes that pushed me out even more causing strain. just finished week one; starting week 2 on tuesday; "jogging" at 5 mph on a treadmill

    Size goal vs Pound goal

on the whole I wear a size 14 - sometimes a 16 pants if the legs are narrow and I would love to be a 10/12. Don't know what weight it will take to get there, I was a 12 in college when I weighed 172; add in I'm having some PS done its all a mystery

I'm staying on plan today because when I do nothing but positive things happen

i am staying on plan today because ...

me too! I'm staying on plan because I physically and mentally feel better when I do. The highly processed carbs taste good (SKITTLES!) but I feel yucky, want more and then feel guilty all at the same time. good for you!
  10. Thanks for posting your experiences and I'm glad you are recovering!
  11. Hi- I've lost enough weight that when I try to run (aka jog very slowly) the movement of my heiny and thighs really hurts. A girdle seems like it would be hard to run in- anyone find any solutions that help??
  12. thanks for the suggestion! I'll try the Assets brand
  13. congrats and thanks for posting! Your scars are healing beautifully! Are you putting anything on them? (Vit E, Silicone sheets, etc)

    Nsv :)

Congrats! its so much fun to have that happen! If you haven't done so, consider taking a photo of yourself in those jeans- hang on to them and keep taking photos as you lose weight- what an inspiration. woooo!

I'm staying on plan because I have my plastic surgery date set (10/28!) and I want the best cosmetic outcome possible!!!
  16. I'm sympathetic to where you are, MaryRose! For me, once I got into 'normal sizes' of clothing and was no longer obese, the intense drive to exercise and watch my diet sort of went kaput. For me, I still exercise but its the diet that has fallen off and I've recommitted to following my calories and limiting the skittles to 2 packs/week rather than 1-2 packs/day! eek! I work similar hours to you and go to the gym at 5 am (get up around 415). I suggest you look at what you are doing now and try to schedule some time to move more (if you aren't exercising on a regular basis)- before work seems to be the best for me cause after work, I'm beat! If you are already exercising and its your diet- try to recommit to logging every bite you put in your mouth. You've done GREAT! You can definitely get to goal.
  17. Thank you both for posting your experiences! Just like the band- the more information people have prior to their own PS, the easier it will be mentally and hopefully, physically! wishing you both a speedy recovery!

    Ask Dr. Schulman...

thank you! I had wondered if compromising the blood flow/tissue to much of the thigh at one time would be a bad idea. Makes sense even if I don't like the answer. thanks!

    Boo Boo Kitty's PS Journey

Dear BBK- at an academic hospital- it is likely you can get assistance in getting things repaired/switching physicians. Ask to speak to a hospital administrator or if UM has them a patient advocate. Make certain you are documenting everything you have gone through so you can present facts for specific dates- the MD will have everything dictated from his perspective. Good luck to you!

    Ask Dr. Schulman...

Dear Dr S - thank you for answering all of these questions! I'm close to 40 and was morbidly obese for > 10 years so have lots of extra skin and will need multiple procedures. Do you ever combine an inner thigh lift with a lower body lift? I can't decide what bothers me more- my pannus, my lumpy heiny or my inner thighs :rolleyes2: thanks!

    emotional eater that's mad

I'm sorry that happened to you- it sucks that even as we lose weight- the comments continue. I'm down 145 lbs since 3/06 (some lost pre band) and I think I get more comments now even though I'm only "overweight" and not "obese" (5'9" and wear a size 14). Yesterday I took the dogs for a walk, was bending over to pick up their waste and some kid in a car yells out "what a huge ass!" :lol I asked if he was talking about himself or did he want me to ask his parents and the kid drove off. I just try to laugh now- I can't control other people, only how I react to them so as others have said, try to let it motivate you in your exercise. I'm doing it for my health, not how people react to me so screw them. hang in there!
  22. weigh daily but record in my tracker once a week on a set day due to water fluctuations that definitely happen

Anyone banded and now has breast cancer?

Dear Dragonfly - I'm a medical oncologist- best of luck to you with your diagnosis and upcoming surgery. The good news is that having breast cancer doesn't mean that you have to abandon the thought of losing weight. Your anesthesiologist may want your band unfilled for surgery but they may be ok with you going on liquids for a day or 2 prior to surgery to ensure your stomach is empty for surgery. If you need (heaven forbid) chemotherapy- you can keep your band filled and still work on losing weight. Chemotherapy can cause fatigue so its important that you try to stay active and exercise to maintain your energy and keep your weight from creeping up. You can ask your oncologist for a referral to a nutritionist so that they can work with you on keeping your Protein levels up/nutrition where it needs to be while on therapy. Multiple patients have told me that the antiestrogen medicines used to treat breast cancer make it harder for them to lose weight- there is mixed data about that issue but again your band tools - exercise/watching your intake will help. There is data that patients with breast cancer who are closer to an "ideal body weight" have a lower risk of their breast cancer coming back. Its hard to deal with a cancer diagnosis and weight loss all at the same time! Take care of your cancer but realize you don't have to give up your weight loss goals as well :cursing: best of luck to you!
  24. I'll be there in the afternoon and wish I were as tall as you! I'm 5'9" :tt1: good luck with your appointment!
