Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!

OK, I am adopting that quote if you don't mind Kezia. When I first decided to do this I was very calm. I considered the risks -- complications, death, etc.... I explained to someone that I understood the risks and I was willing to take them for the chance to be happy and do the things that I've always wanted to do but was either too self conscious about being fat or just too damn fat to do. I'm 49 and want the chance to finally be truly happy and active. I've decided that I want/need it more than I am afraid of it!!

Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!

Hi Guy! I am fellow Louisianian -- in New Orleans (Mandeville). I am waiting for my surgery date.. Aetna required a 3 month pre-op nutritional program and my final visit is next week. I am hoping for a date in November. I'm glad to have another Louisiana buddy. There is also a Louisiana Sleevers group.... ~Dana

    Did I Do Damage?

Good Luck Tuesday Tatylish!! Only 2 more days.....Hoping for my date soon! Keep us posted on everything!!
  5. I see so may posts that state the the sleeve "is just a tool". I think it does actually "teach" you a healthier way of living by the mere fact that you are incapable of eating large amounts of food. If you do, lots of bad things happen. So you learn to modify your eating habits to prevent those bad things...lol..... Negative Reinforcement Training!!! I personally think it's genius.... since I was a kid I used think, if only there was a way that if I ate too much I'd get sick. I used to think it that I'd like to have a disease that would require drastic treatment so that I could not eat. I was a kid when I was wishing for a disease that would require chemo so I would be incapable of eating. I'd like to tell you that I want this surgery for health reasons but if I'm completely honest I'll tell you that the primary reason is I just want to look normal. Vanity and being able to do things that I've never been willing or able to do because of fat is the real reason I am here. My health is secondary and an added benefit. Of course this is just me. I know there are many people who are doing it for health reasons. For me, I'm here for my MENTAL HEALTH.

Hi Geauxforit--- I was just thinking about you-- how are you feeling? Hope the nausea is better. THAT is my biggest fear about this surgery.... ~Dana

Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!

Hi Anslee, I'm thinking my surgery will be the end of November. My Aetna 90 day requirement is over on Nov 14 and the paperwork then gets submitted to Aetna that day or the next. As soon as they approve my doc is fitting me in on his schedule. I'm excited and nervous! I know how you feel about the Facebook pictures....OMG... it's so humiliating. I want to be free of those self loathing feelings..... Dana
  9. I was one of the posters who was kind of shocked that a physician actually performed this surgery on someone who was 154#. BUT, after reading VSSupermodel's subsequent posts it is obvious she is poised, self aware and very intelligent. Maybe VSSupermodel intuitively knew that if she did not take precautionary measures she may very well end up like most of us here...obese or morbidly obese. If that is the case, well I can tell you that had someone said to me 30 years ago that they could prevent me from the pain and self loathing I've carried with me my entire life, I would have had it done it a split second, without hesitation. I do have concerns that this surgery is primed for abuse--- think about it....real supermodels who already starve themselves to the size of anorexic teenage boys will want to have this surgery in order to starve themselves more comfortably. And I have no doubt there will be physicians lined up to cash in on it. So, VSSupermodel, please accept my apologies for my initial "shocked" post. It's very obvious you've thought this out and I wish you all success! And by the way, you certainly handled all the negativity with a great deal of poise .... very impressive!!
  10. I'm in the middle of my 90 day Aetna Pre-Op requirement. I'm starting to feel maybe I'm kidding myself. Here are some of the questions I'm asking myself..... did some of you who had a BMI over say 45 (I'm a 46 BMI) feel similar? Why oh why would this work for you.... you are just fooling yourself if you believe this will work for YOU. Yeah, it works for them but they must not be as screwed up as you or they must have more willpower. They have SOMETHING that YOU don't. Do you reaaaallly think you'll lose enough weight to be normal? Come on, Dana...get real -- that is a pipe dream... You've been morbidly obese most of life...you think suddenly you're going to be riding a bike and hiking, swimming and playing tennis? HA! NAUSEA: I'm highly prone to nausea and I am scared to death that I will have to live with is 24hours a day and I really think I'd rather be fat than live with nausea. I'm not really concerned about the actual risks of surgery. I'm worried about being a failure and I'm extremely worried about nausea. And I am worried about how I'm going to get down the required Protein shakes.... Pain I can handle.

    Louisiana Sleevers?

I'm so jealous!! Please keep us posted! Personally, I love reading every tiny detail about everyone's experiences...Good luck --- tomorrow is the first day of your new life!! ~Dana
  14. I think everyone is surprised because I don't believe someone who weighs 154 pounds needs to have major surgery to have 90% of their stomach permanently removed. Lap Band? Maybe. I am shocked any reputable physician would even consider surgery on someone who wants to lose 30 pounds. Now, maybe she is a "little" person, say 4 feet tall or shorter....ok, I'd get that. If however she is a size 6 and wants to be a size 0, well, that surgeon bordered on unethical. Just my two cents. Maybe there is more to the story and there is a perfectly justifiable reason to do major non-reversible surgery that removes 90% of the stomach on someone who weighs 154lbs....
  15. My 3rd Nutritionist/Nurse Practitioner appt is Monday afternoon ( Aetna requires 4 visits over 90 days)... nutritionist said not worry if I don't lose weight but "just don't gain weight"!! Well, guess what? Yep, I've gained like 3lbs or 4lbs. I am mortified and embarrassed and worried that Aetna will disqualify me. Anybody have Aetna and gained weight during the 90 day nutritional program? To be honest, the whole thing seems ridiculous to me ... I mean, why does Aetna think I want 90% of my stomach removed? Yeah, yeah, I know....they want to test your commitment, etc. Please!!! If they read my history (which I typed up for them) they would see a lifetime of desperation and commitment.... Anybody else have Aetna ( or any insurance) and gained weight during the waiting period? What happened? I'm so embarrassed I've thought about postponing the appt but I know it would be just set me back with Aetna. I want this surgery as soon as possible! Thanks! Dana

    So Regretful......

That is funny....my nutritionist told me that almost everyone comes in for their first post-op visit saying..."oh my God, what have I done".... but within a few weeks everybody says they wish they would have done it sooner.
  17. DanaInNewOrleans

    So Regretful......

My nutritionist and nurse both told me that almost EVERYONE regrets the surgery for the first few weeks. It's not easy. But once the hard part is over they wonder why they had not done it sooner. Try to hang in there......I bet in a few more weeks you'll forget the bad and be excited about the future!

I'm Gaining Weight 2 Weeks In?!?!

I'm going to throw my two cents in here...I think your "Well you asked for help but it doesn't sound like you want to hear it" was harsh, unkind, arrogant, and uncalled for. Where in the world did Kelly give off the vibe that she doesn't want to hear it? It sounded to me like she was talking it out.... Jeez.. Kelly, I would say the carbs are probably going to slow down or stall your weight loss. And it seems like to moved on to eating a full range of food very quickly. I think you have the right idea about going back to basics. Although, take my words with a grain of salt. I haven't had surgery yet (next month!) but I've learned a lot from just reading everything I can here...

    Not Sure Whats Wrong

I'm having the same type of feelings lately. I look in the mirror and want to cry. And I'm supposed to be on my 3 month nutrition program and I've gained 4lbs this month!! I had a lot of different functions this month and a vacation and I was not disciplined. My 3rd appointment is Monday and I'm dreading it. I've even thought about postponing it but that would just delay my surgery. The nutritionist just kept saying no problem if you don't lose any weight ..just don't gain any weight! Well, chalk up another colossal failure..... just getting more and more depressed. I wish my surgery was tomorrow.....
  20. These would have been my suggestions as well. I have definitely heard of insurances waving the In Network policy if there are not any others in the area that perform that surgery/service. Maybe it's not as much as a long shot as you might think??? Don't give up!

Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!

Sadly, I'm mature too! I've wasted my entire life being fat -- I'm hoping this will be the start of my second "birth".....
  22. Question... How many veteran Sleevers are able to eat beef (steak) with no complications? When were you able to start? What type of problems did you run into? What about chicken and pork? Basically I'm looking for the good and bad experiences of transition to eating meat. And your suggestions too. I'm pre-sleeve but know that I will be counting the days to when I can eat meat again once I have surgery. I'm preparing now --yes, I'm neurotic. xxoxo Dana

    List Your Protein Shake Here

My favorite: Half Pure Protein Frosty chocolate RTD shake Half Pure Protein or Atkins Vanilla RTD shake 1 or 2 tablespoons plain Greek Yogurt (makes it creamy and adds extra protein) 1 tablespoon Banana Cream sugar free pudding 1/4 cup Hood low carb milk 1/4 banana 3 or 4 ice cubes If I have time I put everything in the freezer for about 1/2 hour or so to get frosty/half frozen because I like it milkshaky... Sometimes I add a couple spoons of unjury Unflavored Protein powder to boost protein. This makes a large very filling shake so most of the time I drink half and save the rest for later.... There are so many variations you can do--- with different flavor shakes ( the only ones I can drink are Atkins and Pure Protein).... and different flavored sugar free puddings. Lots of people here use Da Vinci or Torani sugar free syrups... the variations are endless....
