Maybe 20 pounds is not enough to cure the diabetes? I always figured that when they say diabetes can be "cured" with surgery, they just meant that the weight you lose will facilitate the lowering of one's blood sugar. Have you spoken with him and expressed the fact that despite your efforts, you've only lost 20 pounds?

15 pounds.

I had my surgery on July 23rd at 7:30am and it has been a ride. Although I woke up from surgery thinking WTF I had just done to myself, I have no regrets about it (at this stage). My one week post-op numbers show that I am down 26 pounds. That's comprised of 11 for the pre-op diet and 15 for the first week post-op. Not to sound cocky but I'm not surprised. Weight loss has never been a problem for me-it's always been maintenance. That's the main reason I elected to have this surgery (although I don't know why this surgery is considered "elective" when it is being used to treat a disease). In my obligatory pre-op nutritionist visit, she also confirmed I'd lose weight quickly because of my athletic background and the fact that in spite of my weight, I'm a true mesomorph. I must admit that at one point I felt that my submission to surgery felt somewhat like defeat. I felt like a lame-o. I felt like a stereotype even though I know I'm not. I'm not necessarily an overly competitive person but I am good at enduring in most of my undertakings. I felt like I was throwing in the towel. Back in late April, my husband I went to the mall to shop for suits (for him) and I happened to walk past one of the mirrors and it pretty much ruined the rest of my day. It was bad enough that the Old Navy that I live and breathe by was starting to lay problematically but this real live visual was just too much to bear. Being a mesomorph, I don't have big round hips (my husband calls me "muscle booty"), round wrists, and fluffy thighs so I couldn't pretend that I was "voluptuous" or "thick" or Rubenesque. A journey into higher and higher weights would surely make me look like a member of the powerlifting team. Aesthestically, my frame is just too large to carry too much weight while at the same time people always visually underestimate my weight. That was my end game for the dieting rat race. That Monday, I must have called or Google'd 100 doctors under my insurance plan. It was more work than I thought because I refused to use a TV doctor and my inane insurance company refuses to give bariatric surgeons their own category which meant that I had to weed through the people who only took out spleens, cysts, tonsils, etc.... I finally found a surgeon and made an appointment for May 9 and the rest is history. I walked away from the first consultation mainly feeling happy that because of my height and structure, my "ideal" weight is considered 20lbs. more than the height/weight charts dictated. I was happy that I wouldn't have to reach for some totally impossible number. I'm mean, in the 5th grade I was 5'7" and 155lbs. so I will probably NEVER make the height/weight chart's definition of "ideal" in a healthy manner. 8 days post-op and I'm feeling pretty good. I'm increasingly able to sleep on my stomach and I'm not bothered by the broth, protein shakes, and liquids. I'm just waiting for my two week follow-up where I will hopefully be released to start back running everyday and get this show on the road. Life is wonderful when you have something to look forward to.

LOL! That's what I'm saying. And raw fruit is banned for me until 6 weeks. -
Wtf! 3 Wks Out And Only Lost 8 Lbs?!?
prettysleeved1 replied to kelliecalgary's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Maybe you're eating more than you think? Even though it's low-carb, the calories could be adding up against you. I'm surprised you are even allowed to eat regular food. I'm 8 days out and I can't even start full liquids until next week. -
I had Care Credit in the past for something else. My credit scores are all in the 700's. It was okay but it's through GE Money Bank and they don't have good reviews. There's another that's affiliated with Chase but I don't anything about that. My doc has pamphlets about it in her office.

Has Anyone Had A Baby After Surgery?

My doc said to wait a year but there is a forum on the topic. -
My Hubby Keeps Eating My Food!

Tell him to stop or to replace. -
I don't know where you live, OP, but these days, bariatric surgeons are everywhere. I'm sure you'll find another doctor that is willing to operate.

Need A New Forum
prettysleeved1 replied to Nikki613's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL! Or people could realize that when they post their business on a public forum, they're asking for whatever responses they get and nobody on a WLS board is going to co-sign eating a Snicker's Ice Cream bar 2 days post-op from their hospital bed. That's the thing about the interwebs: don't start none, won't be none. IJS... OP, that's actually a good idea. -
Dr Kim And Forest Park Medical Center
prettysleeved1 replied to newlifeforlittleME's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My husband had his RNY at Pine Creek which is the sister hosptial of Forest Park. Yep, it's like an assembly line and I'd never recommend anyone have their surgery at either facility; especially since we showed up at 6 like we were told by the hospital and the doctor's scheduler and they didn't get around to us until almost 10 and even then, my hubby laid on a bed in pre-op for over an hour-and-a-half with about 20 other people in the same predicament. While I waited for him, at least 25 more patients showed up in the waiting room, all complaining that it looked like they wouldn't be operated on until well into the nighttime hours even though their scheduled time was late morning-early afternoon. Some people get beepers. I didn't. After about 1 or 2, luggage in tow, I asked a nurse the status of my hubby and she just told me his room number and said I could wait for him there. At around 4, they brought him into the room (I was asleep on the couch after sitting in the waiting room all day). I stayed in his room with him the whole time he was there (3 days) so that's a positive but the whole atmosphere gave me pause. FWIK, these two hospitals are business ventures amongst the more popular bariatric surgeons in DFW (now you see why most of the surgeries are bariatric and they do 3 zillion per day). I'm used to more structured hospitals where your surgery time to honored (to the nearest half-hour). Which is why when I had my sleeve, I chose to pass up doctors who have television commercials because they all wanted to use those hospitals. The surgeon I used adamantly expressed that she would not sign on to do surgery at Pine Creek nor Forest Park and has no plans to do so in the foreseeable future although those doctors have asked her to. -
I agree. I saw some videos on YT from some surgeon's office and he had operated on 10 and 12 year olds. Um...I have to seriously question the feasability and rationale behind that. What are they going to do when they become adults that are out of their parent's house? What type of psych evaluation and counseling could they have possibly had to prepare them for such an undertaking at that age?
-
She didn't say that it's solely age but that looking at a sample of anecdotes like the OP posted, a common factor amongst them is age. Correlation vs. causation. Yes, the US tells you that once you are 18 you are an adult; and yes, there are mature 18 year-olds but you're still a teenager so.... It could be willpower but I just think that at 18, it's not as "real" as it is to someone whose 25, 30, 35. When I was 18, I had only been on one diet in my life that I was put on by my coach. By the time you get 30, 35+ and you've been on every diet, you start feeling new aches and pains, and weight is affecting stuff you thought was unrelated, etc...it starts to get really serious to you. Not to mention the fact that most teenagers are still on their parents' dime (which could be another factor). For the record, my definition of "adult" is out of your parents' house and/or paying bills.

Getting Tired Of Eating
prettysleeved1 replied to KikiCC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's cool. I'm also 5 days post-op (well 6 now) and I can't have pureed foods for another week. I bought a bunch of organic baby food before hand that is now in the freezer because I can't eat it yet. -
Ask if you can see a different nutritionist. My insurance didn't cover the nutrition consult so I could have seen whatever nutritionist I wanted. Luckily, the one my doctor uses works full-time. It was only $140.
-
Well, what did your doctor say about not doing the pre-op diet? Did he say that he'd cancel? If you were saying you had another week, I'd have better advice but at this point, you need to just ride it out. As a last-ditch effort, I would just do liquids all day Sunday but you're at the point where you have to take responsibility for the fact that you didn't follow doctor's orders and prepare yourself for any possible consequences.

At What Weight Limit Did You Say "you Have Had Enough"?
prettysleeved1 replied to Gonnabeslim1day's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
They don't here either. I'm on the larger end of the "regular" sizes there. My height and structure has saved me from a lot in this weight issue. -
I don't see how the luna bar and the applesauce with the carbs/sugar is doing you any favors. Do you exercise?

My hubby used him for RNY but yes, his staff, namely his insurance person/scheduler/prescription person (Ann)...terrible. The day before the surgery, she was supposed to call in a bowel prep that morning. My husband waited over two hours and 3 phone calls (at the pharmacy) because she forgot to call in the prescription. The bowel cleanse had to be started by a certain time that day and the clock was ticking. Then they tried to call later that day....around 5...and ask my husband to reschedule his surgery after he had already turned in his FMLA forms and everything else. My husband asked for our co-insurance payment back and told them he'd walk. All of sudden, they could do the surgery. Then, they told us to be at the hospital at 6 am. We get there to find out they rescheduled him for 10. We sat in the waiting room for hours only for my husband to be called back and wait in pre-op well over an hour-and-a-half. They also use a crappy hospital and it was like herding cattle (I think it's owned by a group of bariatric doctors like Alexander and Barker). Literally at least 20 people in pre-op holding all laying on beds and you see your surgeon come in, take someone back, operate on them, and then come and get the next person. Like an assembly line. My advice is to stay on top of Ann and recheck your insurance on the matter. After it was all said and done, we found out that our insurance was not going to cover what they said they would based on.....you know what? Feel free to PM me for that whole story because...well....

To Tell Or Not To Tell?
prettysleeved1 replied to Tisa's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I assume you're over 18 and you're either using your own insurance or your own money so you can tell or not tell whomever you want because it's nobody's business. -
And you have to watch your calories while you're on it. You won't hit near 1,000 but you'll have a better chance of hitting 20lbs. in a couple of weeks.

I'd probably do a PSMF (basically high Protein, low fat, extremely low carb) and step up the workouts if I were you. http://www.whole-hea..._Fast_09-02.pdf

Worried About Psychologist
prettysleeved1 replied to Chubarella's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, their report can contraindicate surgery. The fact that you've been recently abandoned will be addressed and the psychologist will likely want to make sure that you whole aim in getting the surgery isn't so you can get your husband back or find another man. They also talk about past diet failures and why you think that this time will be different. But, other than that it's easy. I have Panic Disorder and OCD and go through bouts of depression but I had no problem with the insurance. -
At What Weight Limit Did You Say "you Have Had Enough"?
prettysleeved1 replied to Gonnabeslim1day's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
There was no weight. It was my inability to maintain a healthy weight. Bouncing up and down the scale for years and years. Plus, my Old Navy starting fitting wrongly and so that was it for me because I refused to bump up to the next largest size. -
Try regular protein treatments (on your hair).
