  1. I just had out patient surgery on my left hand and am so happy I can have my protein drink and water again. My concern was not for my hand but for making sure I got my protein and liquids in. So now I get to practice typing with only my right hand.

    feb 2013 sleevers weigh in

Sleeved on 2/21 and have only lost 8 lbs post surgery I did have a week of liquids pre-op and lost 10 lbs then. I guess I'm a really really slow loser. I'm trying not to get discourage. It almost makes me want to eat junk food since I'm not losing the weight and I'm out walking just about everyday for 3 - 8 miles. I'm being good with getting all my liquids in and my protein. It's time for the brain to kick the butt to get losing on this weight. I'm eating between 600-900 calories a day. Oh well, less saggy skin....at least that's what I'm telling myself.
  9. So I had my preop appt today and asked my doctor a few questions and here was his responses. What is his complication rate, where there are problems? About 1%, but they are not necessarily related to the sleeve; it could be pneumonia, infection, spleen. But they count that as part of the 1%. He does not remember any problems with the sleeve, but an incident with a bypass that they thought there was a leak and went back in to check and could find none. Is it just him doing the surgery? I asked this because he kept saying we for the above question. There are 2 surgeons in the operating room. I like the idea of two sets of eyes. Why do people say "No blind ng tube"? He said that's probably for the first 6 months while the stomach is healing. Why no nsaids? He said it's ok to take them occasionally not, just not on a regiment since it could cause stomach irritation. Do I need a medical id bracelet? He said if I wanted, the for the first 6 months, then don't need it. How soon can I go back to work? I work on a computer at a desk job, so he said I definitely should take 3-4 days off and can do work. The main thing is driving that I shouldn't do. He said it was ok for me to work from home if I felt like it. How about blood clots? He said he gives medication for that through an IV What about antacids? He will prescribe it if I need it. I'm on blood pressure medicine, should I continue to take it? Yes, but monitor my blood pressure. If I see it going down after a week or so, then stop taking it and talk to my pcp. Can I have my stomach? No it goes to pathology. Can you take a picture of it? He said he will try to remember. I told him I would like to see it and have the measurements. He said he would try to remember. After talking to him, it definitely made me feel comfortable with the procedure. Luckily the doctor's office is part of the hospital so I was able to go ahead and pre-register. I also need to have a phone interview with the nurse, which I already set up for tomorrow, to make sure everything is fine for surgery and to get some information for the anesthesiologist. So I'm all ready! Just waiting to start my pre-op liquid diet in 2 days!

    is it gonna work?

Hi, I was sleeved on 2/21 and think I'm a slow loser also. I make sure I get my 60-80g protein each day and drink 8 cups of water a day. I have been walking 3-8 miles a day....occasionally 8. And I've managed to lose 6 pounds the last 2 weeks. I'm working awfully hard to lose this weight. I'm just hoping that it's my body adjusting to the much lower calories a day. I think I'm getting 600-800 calories a day. Hopefully the scale will move a little faster. If not, I keep trying to remind myself that I will have less saggy skin for being a slow loser.

    Crab Meat......yummy!

So I'm in the puree stage of my diet now and the thought of puree food is just so unappetizing to me. I would rather stick with the full liquid longer. So, I've been using my teeth as my puree device. I'm sitting here nibbling on crab meat and chewing the heck out of it before swallowing. The family will get Maryland crab soup and I get pure crab meat.
  13. Oh, can you eat a chocolate bunny for me? I see them in the stores and want one.

    post op diet description!

Hi, I'm two weeks out and the first 2 weeks, I had a protein shake (30g protein) for breakfast. For lunch I drank unjury chicken broth (20g protein). Dinner was some kind of soup broth with 10-20g of unflavored protein in it. I drank 8 cups of water in between meals and had SF popscicles and sometimes SF pudding.
  15. Hey as long as it works for you. I got myself a 24oz Tervis cup and I know I have to refill it at least twice a day. That's how I track my fluids

    Got my date 4/16/13

good luck with Aetna. Don't you just hate the way insurance companies dictate your health rather than your doctor?

    ? about dehydration

keep sipping sipping sipping! Try to make a conscious effort to drink more. In the beginning, I just focused on getting my fluids in by taking a sip then walk around the inside of the house then take another sip. I did nothing else but focus on getting my liquids in. I know by noon I should have at least 3 cups of Water in me. If not then focus on just sipping until I get it in. Then by 3-4, I should have another 3 cups of water in me. Then I try for another 3 cups and if I don't make it, then it's ok because I would have had 6 plus my Protein shakes/soups. You don't want to have to depend on going to the hospital for IV fluids. It's hard in the beginning, but you can do it with a sip at a time. Have you tried flavoring your water? I use Crystal Light for 6 cups then plain water for the last 3. Good luck with getting your fluids in.

    Nail polish and surgery

Hi, when I had my surgery, my pre-op instructions were no nail polish or artificial nails. When I went in for the surgery, the nurse checked my fingers by pressing down to see the color change. I'm not sure what that's for...maybe circulation. I had silk wraps on my nails and I made sure I removed them first. I guess you can wait and see what your doctor says.

    Soft foods-What did you eat?

tofu, applesauce, cottage cheese, lentil soup, puree chili, cheese... those are some of the ideas I have for when I start soft foods.
