    Alcohol ?

Studies show the rate of alcoholism is 10% and growing for people after WLS. Why risk another addiction/problem? Struggling with weight is hard enough why add another thing?
  3. You could talk to the psychologist and ask them if they see you as depressed and the depression interfering with you getting the surgery. the surgeon or the insurance company maybe the source requiring the therapy automatically because of the diagnosis. If the psychologist doesn't see it as interfering with you getting the surgery ask them to write a letter stating that. Wouldn't hurt to check.
  4. Sept. 24 is my surgery date!!! I get to die to the old eating habits and live to be skinny and healthy!!!! I can't wait to have more energy!

Did they weigh you on surgery day?

Weird- I have always been weight before surgery for the good meds team (I don't know how to spell anithesiologist?)! I have always done ok because you have to stop food at midnight and liquids 6 hours before so I always feel light. Since I can only do liquids the day before that should help too!
  6. Well, I just heard from my insurance company and they approved me!!!!!!!!!!!! They didn't have my stuff for even a week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I met with the surgeon next week!!!!!!!! :whoo::clap2::bounce::bounce::wow2:
  7. Caution about drinking!!!!!!!! Research is showing the gastric surgery recipients are increasingly becoming alcoholics after surgery-even if they had no drinking before the surgery!!! I know its easy to say "it won't happen to me" but be careful. The band is for life so you'll have to deal with it.
  8. You could also ask the doctor if it is ok to take something for motionsickness or nausea. Non drowsy dramamine can be good or if it is ok to have flat ginger ale. Ginger helps with nausea. I have heard of some people getting the patch that goes behind the ear like people get on cruises. Hope this helps and good luck!!!!!
  9. Good for you!!!! I'm still working on all the pre-op stuff. My app. hasn't even gone to the insurance company yet! I know it seems hard but think of all the reasons why you wanted the surgery and what you will get back!
  10. I have to do a diabetic exchange system diet. It makes no sense to me- I'm supposed to have 5 fats!!!I've been avoiding fats for so long that I don't eat them. But I only get 6 servings of protein and 5 servings of breads. Couldn't I exchange some of the stupid fats for a protein or carb? And 3 fruits and 3 veggies. I don't ever eat that many veggies. And do you know what happens if I have 4 servings of fruits/veggies? lets just say I am in the bathroom alot! I know I am lucky I don't have to do the 2 weeks liquids but a part of me wonders if it would just be easier than weeks of this program. I can't have my appointment with the surgeon until I am close to loosing all the pre-op weight! The first month I did the stupid thing I lost only 1.5 pounds. Part of it was I was so hungry that I would just loose it and then over eat. Its hard but I guess its good practice because this will be sorta what life after the band will be like! NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS BEING THIN FEELS- I KEEP TELLING MYSELF THAT!!!!
  11. Man!!! 5 weeks-that's cruelty and torture! It will be worth it though. Hang in there- just focus on one moment at a time......could you go in a coma for those weeks it would be easier lol...Good luck
  12. I had my second meeting with my dietician. I lost a total of 1.5 pounds in a month!!!!!I've exercised, changed alot of my eating habits, I'm hungry most of the time, I've given up caffeine since May 12 and I have choclate only once a week now. Granted, my portions were a bit over, I tend to go over one serving of Protein or bread- but that is alot better. We discussed what I need to do and such but ....still!:):smash: Thanks for letting me vent. I will do better on the program because ain't nothing going to get in my way from haing this surgery!!!!:amen:

  14. I'm sorry! That must be so frustrating! All I can say is stay at it. Have you talked to your trainer (if you have one)? Muscle does weigh more than fat. Have you lost inches?

    It's Finally Here!

Good for you. I am so jealous! What preparations do you need to do the day before? I'm sure you can't eat after midnight. Anything else? Like those fleet enemas? I hate those things so much it could almost prevent me from having the surgery! I said almost!

    It's done

I'm sorry for your loss. What stress! Its great that you lost weight and can get back on track. May you have the Serenity you write about. I hope you believe that your mother is with you and giving you the strength and ability to do this plan-just like she wanted.
  17. Good for you! I hope its a good experience for you. If you haven't heard about the Book Fighting Weight By K. Ali (One of Mohamed Ali's daughters) it is great. She is the new spokeperson for the Lap Band Co. It has good info. and tells her personal journey (and her surgeion's). Get it if you can. I got mine at Barnes and Nobel. It would make a good recovery read! Good luck! Karen

    Interested in a Gathering?

Another idea would be to go on a cruise. There are cruises that range anywhere from 3-10 days (or more). It includes your lodging, food and entertainment. Plus, you can go to cool places. And so Australia doesn't feel left out we could cruise New Zeland and Australia (ok-I'm dreaming here).

    Interested in a Gathering?

Another thought would be to do our get together the same time the American Bariatric Surgeons do their annual confrence in June. It might be easier to get sponsers then. IF its somewhere warm I suggest it takes place in the winter. I'm form Minnesota- I need a winter break!

    Great Book on LapBand

"Fighting Weight" by Khaliah Ali. She is the sister of Laila Ali in Dancing with the stars. she has been a designer in Simplicity for awhile now. Anyway, her book has been great so far. She tells her story of gaining weight and dieting and the surgery. I'm half way through it. It has been full of information about the LapBand. Her two doctors in New York wrote in it to. One of the doctor's had the LapBand done. I highly suggest the book-its good for support people as well.

    Age when banded?

At a meeting last night with a surgeon who does the lap band it sounded like its been approved by the FDA for age 18 and up. There is some research going on for teens- I believe that is in NY. I can understand why you are hesitant if your family isn't supportive. Would it make sense to have a family member go with you to the info. session or to the Dr. who suggested it. Also, research the surgery. It is less risky, reversable. I'm 43 and in the process of doing all the stuff to get approved but, I wish I could have done it years ago! Good Luck!

    Minnesota

Hello from the land of 10,000 lakes! (Yes, we really have that many). I have been here to this site since Dec. but I'm finally announcing myself. I have met with my dietican once (the weight loss plan is a challenge. She has me back on an exchange system. I haven't done that in years! I'm used to points with Weight Watchers. Breakfast is real hard. I'm working on it! I did my intake and the nurse I will work with is great. Tomorrow I have my first appointment for the psychological eval. I hope to have surgery in Sept. I am already exercising- but not a half hour daily. Its more like one hour every other day. I must say this sight has been great to read as I was considering surgery. I knew I didn't want to do the gastric by-pass. I just can't see having my insides rearranged. The insights, tips and relaying experineces has helped me feel confident about my decision. So, thanks already! I'm not very good on the computer so it may take awhile for me to get a picture up and all the other stuff. Karen
