do you get a numbing agent before a fill?
QuilterLaura replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have had 6 fills/unfills and have never had anything to numb it. The dr. sometimes has trouble finding my port and once I was stuck 3 times, but it's not really anything that painful. It lasts only a second and once the needle it in, there is no discomfort. I don't see any reason to numb it, just don't look at that needle, lol! -
Hi all, I recently (and finally) got some restriction on my last fill and now I'm wondering....I have to go to a Christmas dinner at a Chinese restaurant and am not sure what foods would go down best. Any suggestions?

How soon after surgery could you eat raw veggies/salads?
QuilterLaura replied to singermama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My dietician said to wait until about 6 mo. post op for raw veggies, salads, etc. Keep it soft until then. But, I do get re-evaluated at 3 months post op so we'll see then. I am 4 1/2 weeks post op. Good luck and maybe you should check with your dr. office and see what they recommend for you. Everyone seems to get different instructions. -
Any food off limits for life?
QuilterLaura replied to AMLP's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just saw my doc on Thursday and I asked specifically about caffeine, since there has been some differing opinions about it. He said it was fine. I do drink decaf sometimes but it's nice to know I can have a "real" coffee if I want. As far as other things off limits for good include: white bread, tough dry stringy meats (sounds yucky anyway, lol), and pop. THen of course there's the high fat/sugar empty calorie foods. (you know, the ones that taste good, lol). Not bacause you Can't eat them, but you shouldn't eat them when you're trying to lose. Good luck to you!! -
Hi all you nurses out there! I graduated from University of Michgian's school of nursing in 1985. I worked at my local community Hospital from then until Thanksgiving 2000. Once my first son was born I only worked part time evenings so I could be home with him during the day, then my DH would take over in the evenings. Once my youngest started first grade I only worked after 7pm and on weekends so I could be home with they got home from school. I was kind of nuts about day care....it wasn't for me. I worked MedSurg usually but was also cross trained in OB, ICU, and ER. In a small hospital you learn to be a jack of all trades, lol. I loved my job (most nights, lol). My problem started with my knees. I have a bone disease affecting my knees and have had 5 operations to keep me going. As my weight increased and I got older, I found I could no longer be on my feet as much as I needed to be in order to work. I worked less and less and finally retired. Now my sons are in college (Purdue University) and high school and thankfully my husband has excelled in his job and there is no financial need for me to find another job. I do miss nursing but have accepted that chapter in my life is over. I was banded April 2, 2008. I am having some port issues and go back to the surgeon today for him to look at it. Otherwise I'm doing fine so far. I loved reading this thread and wish you all the best. Hopefully we can start a nurses group!

Nya, I, too, have a MIL issue and I also opted not to tell anyone. Mostly because if anyone knew, she would find out...she has powers, lol! I am so sorry that your request was forgotten and now it's too late to keep it to yourself. I can only hope that your success will speak for itself soon and she'll just be able to marvel at you! Good luck, Laura

afraid to give away "fat clothes"????
QuilterLaura replied to lonestar5212's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have just started to run into this myself (yeah!). I was talking to the nurse at my bariatric center and she said....get rid of them, you're never going back there again! I feel like this: If there is something you particularly loved, try to have it altered. I think I will divide stuff into 2 piles, the give-away pile (Goodwill, church, etc.) and the good pile. I have clothes that I paid a lot for and are still in very good if not new condition. I was thinking I would take those to a local consignment shop and see if I could get a little money for them and put that towards buying new things. Whatever you decide, congrats on being a loser! LOL :biggrin2: -
Lot's has Changed. It's been awhile since I been here.
QuilterLaura replied to FuelMan's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Fuelman, Wow, what a journey for you! Sorry you were so sick, but glad that you're back on the right track now. I think the photo at the top is a huge inprovement over the last one. I swear she looked like she was offering us the poison apple, lol! Hang in there and way to go on all you've lost so far! -

Banded March 6th and getting frustrated !!!!HELP!!!!
QuilterLaura replied to rosiered's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Rosie, You've lost 30 pounds!!!!!! I'd say that the weight surely IS falling off you! It sounds like you have just had one fill and don't have good restriction yet. That period can be hard, cause you have to rely on will power to stay on the program. Don't weigh yourself so often and concentrate too hard on the numbers. Eat well and excercise and the weight will follow. Once you get another fill no doubt things will get easier. In the meantime, congratulate yourself on 30 pounds gone for good! -
I've never heard of this product, what is it?

How long did you wait to drive after surgery?
QuilterLaura replied to angelface's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I drove the next day. Maybe not my first choice, but I had to pick up my son, there was no one else to do it. I was uncomfortable, but I survived. Every day after that it got easier. I did make sure I had not taken any pain med in more than 7 hours. When I got home I was ready for it! Good luck. -
I am 11 days post-op. My surgeon also said the same thing. I was thinking, yeah, good idea! Let's keep that thing in the right place for good. Honestly, there was virtually no pain in my stomach area, just in the port site. Good luck to you!

I'm right there with you hope2be! I was banded on Wednesday 4/2 and I still have gas pain. It's worse than the incisional pain for sure. At first it was in my left shoulder and now seems to be all across my chest and abd, even my neck, lol. I have tried gas-x, not sure if they helped or not but will take again today just in case. I tried heat and that does seem to help, and also walking helps. I just hope it won't last too much longer. Hang in there, and good luck to you! Laura

Chocolate Anyone?!
QuilterLaura replied to Here I Go!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Fran, I checked out their website and they have a lot of products. Very interesting, I may have to order a few. Unfortunately they charge $8.95 shipping for up to 10 items. I don't know if I want to buy 10, but I may try a few. I have never seen these in my stores at home. Thx for the idea. Laura -
What kind of band do you have?
QuilterLaura replied to TxChelsey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On my pre-op appt, my surgeon said he uses the AP. I don't know what size I got yet, I just got banded 3 days ago. On my post-op appt I will ask. Good luck to you! -

1-Day Post Op-need encouragement
QuilterLaura replied to wickman2617's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
wow, Annie! Sorry to hear about your complications. I was sitting here, 2nd day post op, fighting gas pains, abd pain, feeling like crap and now I realize how lucky I am! I hope you will have a quick and uneventful recovery and this will soon just be a bad memory while you progess to more healthy and beautiful you. My prayers are with you girl. -
Hi ThinMinnie! I, too, was banded today. I am amazed that I have no discomfort at all in my stomach area, but the whole right side of my abdomen is killing me! I know, the port area is the sorest, but I'm really uncomfortable. I had severe gas pains earlier today but thankfully that has subsided. I'm thinking about going to bed but I really doubt I'm going to be able to lie down without too much pain. Anyone else feel that way?

Crushing Meds Post Op?
QuilterLaura replied to dancinglamb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also take Glucosamine and Chondroitin for arthritis and it's a horse pill! Dr. said not to take it after surgery unless I crush it or chop in into smaller pieces. I'm wondering if anyone has ever found a liquid or chewable form of these? I really do feel better when I take it. Thx, Laura -
Need Help with protein shake.
QuilterLaura replied to captain danbo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay, I will be banded on Wednesday (yeah!) and there just seems to be WAY too many options as far as the protein drinks. What are the parameters as far as protein/carb/calories that you are supposed to strive for? My dr gave me samples of Isopure (YUK) and unjury (less bad) and nectar (kinda like drinking jell-o). But I haven't bought a supply of anything yet. Guess I better get shopping! -
Pre-op diet- kill me now!
QuilterLaura replied to dogluvr's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am right there with you dogluvr! I am on day 9 of my Medifast diet. Have lost 4 1/2 pounds the first week. It does get a LITTLE better, but I would still KILL for some decent food! My surgery is April 2nd, when is yours? GOod luck! -
Hi BigBandFan, my surgery date is April 2nd, looks like we're going through this almost the same day! I am in Indiana, where are you? I am a little older than you, but only 3 years. I could use a friend, how about you? Laura

How To Hide Lap Band From Work
QuilterLaura replied to dpj00024's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dan, I am scheduled for April 2nd, when is your "big day"? I also feel the same way. It's no one's business, really. I have some "friends" who are such gossips it drives me crazy. If they find out the whole world will know, and I'm not comfortable with that. I don't work, but I do take a class 3x a week. I'm just going to make up something about why I wasn't at class and change the subject. Hopefully it won't be an issue. -
Babbs, My insurance requires a 6 month Dr. supervised diet, and I'm almost to the end of that. I have my psych eval done also. I see the nurse practitioner on Tuesday and I'm going to ask her what we do next and if she can guesstimate when my surgery will be.
