Veterans: Do you follow the rules?
sassypants replied to EarthyGoalie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do and don’t but from like month 4 I didn’t really anyway. Now to explain I don’t track calories I don’t weigh my food I don’t drink Water I don’t exercise much and that’s the things I don’t do and haven’t done from very early out. my personal reason for not doing them is I didn’t want to have to calorie count etc for the rest of my life I wanted to know by looking roughly how much and my choice in what I eat be good enough not on a diet for the rest of my life. The things I do is no standard carbs as in rice Pasta potatoes hardly ever bread and if I do its never even a slice. I do get my Protein in, my meals consist of meat and veg and healthy no take aways no pre-packaged no ready meals not a load of fried stuff either. I do eat “bad” stuff chips/candy/cookies/cake from time to time I never planned not to for the rest of my life and I don’t see anything wrong with a little bit of it now and again. There is a big difference between eating packet after packet/bag after bag etc every day or several times a week and 1 or 2 here and there even a cookie a day if you like. I know for me adding a handful of chips one day or a cookie or 2 another a candy bar isn’t going to escalate to more than that, for some people it’s a slippery slope and i get that but I didn’t have a food addiction before and I don’t now so for me its not a issue. I can be eating a candy bar and after 2 bites go meh either give it to someone else or stick it in the fridge for when I next fancy a bit. I’ve eaten a bit of “bad” food here and there from about like 6 months out. I will share a funny thought I often have in my head about eating honestly I feel like some people not anyone in particular just type of person over actual names pictures people are so strict so NO NO NO NEVERRRRR on anything less than organic clean and super healthy super food that I imagine one day they will take a taste of “bad” food like a speck on there tongue and go on a eating gorging rampage! Like letting the maniac out of the box from being locked up for so long that’s its overkill and a nightmare. So I never tell anyone DO NOT DO THAT EVERRRR I think some people do need to learn how to control eating even “bad” food to not go over the top and not 1 year or 2 or 3 go on a rampage or add so much in that the old habits and eating styles are back full force. -

Cheating the consultation scale...
sassypants replied to msjoy83's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only time I had a gown on and stepped on the scale was day of surgery, never been patted down either lol -
In general it’s staples you can have stitches as reinforcement I did but its not just a stitch line no. Gas can seem like burning pain, food can make you feel the burning pain some of my reactions to food include being clammy all of a sudden like a cold sticky wave of it, burning sensation, waves of pain, hard breathing, breaking out into a sweat, feeling dizzy, dry heaving, hiccups, burping and actual puking. If you really are concerned go to ER and tell them you had the op what your feeling and see if they have someone on call who can deal with it if they don’t have a specialist they can still check you over and put your mind at ease whatever the outcome is.

What idiots how can you prove you can eat and drink when they have a tube stuck down your throat doing it for you! I get so annoyed with rude medical staff who use a list of scare tactics on us, we are not children speak to us like adults be frank but don’t try and put the fear of god into us and scare us with or else crap to do what you want!

If you’re ok with milk drink some of that take a stomach acid pill yes even if it’s a extra one 1 extra wont hurt you and will help settle the acid if the heat and spice has kicked it up a few notches. Drink some peppermint tea or warm peppermint oil and water combi if you have it (I was given peppermint oil they mixed with water in hospital and a bottle to take home to settle my stomach) and stick to bland non spicy food for 24 hours. I can’t do highly spicy or heat well I couldn’t close to being out that whole ouch ugh ouch thing happened to me the burning the pain the ut oh feeling so I never went too spicy or hot again. If I make a curry now I do the earthy kind over spicy hot kind

Items for the kitchen?
sassypants replied to dsmith_rn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did also have 2 thermoses right at the start one with broth/soup the other with hot tea so I didn’t have to keep reheating or making new cups of tea when I was only sipping little bits the lid cup is really handy you just pour a little in and sip without wasting any if you want more you just pour some more out. -
To scared to swallow food!
sassypants replied to sweetjam69's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Going to take off the kid gloves and be really frank here because I feel its really needed don’t want to upset you honestly I don’t. Your developing an eating disorder, the fear of being sick and the pain it may and has caused you already is making you fearful of food. You really have to overcome it now before it gets worse. Fear is a really hard thing to overcome mentally your blocking yourself. You can go 1 of 2 ways either go back to liquids and work forward again and maybe by the time your on food you will know your ok with the liquid you will actually swallow or you can start to try and conquer it now by swallowing 1 bite. If you can’t do 2 that’s ok try next meal but work your way up and wait inbetween swallows pay attention to how your feeling if your feeling tight, restricted and any signs of pain just stop for 15mins relax. Pre op I developed a fear of food due to my ibs the pain and bathroom results from just a few mouthfuls was hours worth so I ended up eating once a day and sometimes not at all I just couldn’t face it. Post op I puked all the time and had extreme pain I had to go all the way back to broth stage and work forward again. I still puke often now but I have a smaller sleeve I know that now so I don’t go by the average “should be this amount at this stage” guideline I go by me I can be chewing food and feel that tight feeling that wave of clammy ugh that washes over my body I stop dead and spit it out that’s my body saying DO NOT swallow that danger will robinson danger!! Its ok not to eat as much as your told if you can’t you can add another small meal during the day to make up for it. I was given 2 types of meal planning choices 3 meals and 2 Snacks a day plus shakes or 6 small meals a day no snacks and shakes. So breaking down the meal sizes and spreading them out throughout the day is fine as long as your not going over daily allowance of what you should be having. Good luck honestly don’t let the fear overtake you. -
My surgeon is a horrible person
sassypants replied to lizv123's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I get it its highly frustrating when you try and try to be heard/seen and your real concerns looked at just to be told off like a child and its “bad girl bad!” and not anyone else’s fault but yours. Makes you want to scream and punch people and like every single way you turn its just hopeless. Had this years and years ago nothing to do with wls another issue had a rude doctor who made me cry during our meeting and all the way home. Just saying be careful they will twist it after all he is a medically trained doctor if he is the only one there they have a lot to loose if he is a insurance risk for litigation they will stick by him and rake you over the coals. That’s not to put you off but to be aware if you go ahead with it you are going to have to be strong and figure out all the ways they will try and twist and turn it and come at you. Also before you even speak about going ahead with anything get a copy of all your medical notes you would be amazed at what things get noted down its got a lot of people in trouble in the past for putting in rude judgmental remarks even if they were having a bad day. You want all this now as your gonna get a edited if at all version if you go ahead with legal actions. You need to get a new doctor and have them check everything out tell you point blank if the actions and treatment were truly the right things to do given the situations. You also need one for just better treatment all round even if you were told he did the right thing there is no way you would deal with him again or trust his word or treatment of you anyway. -
My surgeon is a horrible person
sassypants replied to lizv123's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don’t have attorney advice in the uk so no help sorry. But I did want to say a couple of things, the sleeve size after surgery is not a standard given only 4ox and that’s it! Its between 4-12 sometimes more it all depends on the size of your stomach going in. they don’t remove 99% of your stomach because its bigger and will leave you with a bigger sleeve they remove the same amount unless there is other medical reasons requiring a little more be removed. That’s why they tell you 4oz of food and 4 only your not meant to test to see if it can hold more, even if it can your not meant to try and see if it does. Knowing its bigger or holds more means you will put more in it meaning too or not. You’re not meant to eat till bloated/full/feeling restriction your meant to re learn what real full means not eat till I am stuffed. I would think strongly about surgery as you are a MRSA carrier the likelihood of infection is a lot higher with you, a simple cut can turn nasty with that if you have it on your skin or in your tissue. Stress meds other medical issues the ones directly caused by the op are all reason you may not be losing as much weight your body is under a lot of stress and healing constantly it seems, we tend to store to be used as needed when our body needs to recover. We go into a kinda fight for survival mode when persistent health issues. I am gonna give a personal opinion now I do feel you have been treated crap I also feel you should have stopped going to this man a long time ago. You also have to look at that if you are going to bring a suit against him they will ask you why you continued to be under this mans care it can be spun that you knew it was less than adequate care and still went to have a stronger case against him. Personally the only issue I have had with my medical team is my dietician I saw her once 1 month out then not again every single appointment I had she would cancel and postpone to another date 2 months later and keep doing it I lodged a complaint with the head of the department and with my own gp who also lodged a complaint. I was given another appoint meant and the same thing happened only this time she rang me and left the appointment date on my answer machine when I went tot he hospital I was told I missed it, it was 2 days pervious. I then received a really crappy letter telling me I failed to turn up and its imperative as part of my recovery and ongoing treatment that I attend these appointments. Basically twisting it to be my fault, I was also down as a no show for every appointment when I said that’s not true at all and took in all the postponed letters I proved this woman is full of crap and is fudging my notes because she can’t keep appointments. I still haven’t seen her at this point I don’t care any more its almost 2 years out for me and I am doing fine on my own which they are really really lucky about! Good luck! -
Constipation
sassypants replied to hopeful2loose2014's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
prune juice -
You can enjoy it so hey you can’t drink or eat you can still enjoy the company the atmosphere and dance. Plenty of times I have gone to a family event with a protein shake in my bag and sipped on that. Ok so 1 month out is still the ugh crappy stage but it should stop you enjoying the people and the event or having fun. Think about it how many times in your life have you been to a event/party and the food was crap yet you still had a good time? That’s all this is crappy food you don’t want anyway but still a good time!

Worried about lifting my toddler after surgery
sassypants replied to goodbye3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don’t have kids but I was told nothing over 3lbs for 3 week lol They tell you not to pick up anything heavy due to the internal stitching/staples they don’t want you to pop them and possibly develop a hernia and need another surgery to fix this. Remember they punch through muscle layers and internal walls of tissue to get to your stomach that’s all bruised battered and put back together with dissolvable stitches mainly that’s what you’re being careful not to damage with the heavy lifting. -
All these complications...is it worth it?
sassypants replied to Flutterfly19's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had no complications from surgery (I did stop breathing and my stats dropped but that was due to me being a unhealthy smoker and how many hours under more than the sleeve) Other than that it really depends on your definition of complications to me things I experience are part and parcel of the op like the pain the gas the hair loss the puking its all spelled out to you (well me at least it was very very clearly) pre op it can and mostly likely will happen. Yes I do have a sleeve in the smaller end of the size spectrum but none of us are told exactly how big it will be before the op they don’t know till the day of and they see the size of your stomach when they go in your given the average between this and this size not a exact size pre op. body dysmorphia is not something you get as a result of having the surgery it’s a mental condition. I have a personal friend who full on has this condition she has inflated her boobs and lips several times via plastic surgery and still sees them as small and wants them bigger it’s a completely different thing to still seeing your self as the fat person you once were and your mind not catching up to the new smaller you yet. In time your mind will catch up and you will be used to you. Would I do this again? Yes every single time yes and I haven’t had it easy but it’s not that hard on the scale of things in all honesty and what I got out of it and benefited me and my health and life far far farrrr outweighs any pain puking hair loss and vitamin deficiencies. -
The whole thing sits in your stomach so yes it all counts, your stomach doesn’t section off your food like you do when weighing it you should put the plate on the scale zero it out and then put your food on plus gravy and toppings or extras for a full real count of what you are eating.

Items for the kitchen?
sassypants replied to dsmith_rn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Me personally I would cross off bathroom scale I don’t have one myself and only have my weight checked at the hospital or doctors. Lots of people step on the scale once a day some even several times a day for me that’s a big ole no thank you! I would not bother with ice cube trays I would go to the $1/£1 store and pick up a couple of packs of baby food containers you can get them really small in my shop 12 in a pack. They also come in really handy to put meds in for on the go or dressing/sauce later on down the line etc Agree with the shaker cup with the wire ball whisk I do put mine in a blender to make my shakes but I don’t drink the fast enough and i make 4 at a time so the ball whisks them up and blends them before drinking if they have been sitting in the fridge. Get some decaf tea bags if you have a aversion to cold drinks hot decaf tea is perfect. Again not a fan of flavoured fruit teas myself so good ole fashioned normal tea for me. I didn’t go out of my way to buy measuring cups spoon blenders etc already have them in the house as I cook and bake a lot but puree stage you will need some sort of thing even if it’s a hand held one. I wouldn’t pre buy a whole load of Protein powders either out tastes change after the op so if you have spent a lot of money stocking up you might have to do what I did and give it all away and start again as nothing I liked pre opt tasted good post op. I would also suggest some good quality prune juice and when the going all the time stage ends and you enter the not at all stage start drinking a glass a day as the constipation stage is right around the corner and its pretty bad plus prune juice is a liquid and will count as Fluid intake for the day and a natural mover to get you going. -
Speaking of melon I love watermelon and I tried it the water content in it is so much I just puked it up every tie and got the foamies so so bad and I love that stuff too so long watermelon *cries

honest desires....
sassypants replied to readyanxiousscared's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am one of the never set out to be skinny types. Complete honesty never actually thought I would lose this much weight, we never set a goal I was asked if I had one I said umm smaller and healthy. I had no goal I still don’t my ticker has one because I needed one to have it but would I cry if I never got to 190? No honestly I wouldn’t other than my belly which is a lot of skin I am pretty small all over as I am right now past 6-8 months has been small steady weight loss been between the same sizes in clothes for about 10 months now so really to me nothing has changed other than I got lighter on the scale. Sure it’s a hey now that’s cool! But I honestly do not have a target or goal weight I have to reach to be happy with this process. I was over 400lbs I had no life for real I did not hardly ever leave my house unless I was going in a car and then I need to know I would be sitting and not walking much or standing when I got to my destination. I had sleep apnoea and because of my pcos and not having periods for over 7 years I was in the middle of being testing and discussing treatment for womb cancer as I was having borderline results over and over. So I wanted a life to not have my own body choke me in my sleep and a side result of the hormones releasing that’s stored in my fat cells meant I didn’t have to have treatment to reverse the borderline results my own body did it. Of course I wanted to be smaller but never thought in my head I would be a skinny size 8. -
was told to stop the prilosec by surgeon
sassypants replied to jaysleever's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
That’s actually not true “hunger” pangs can be acid or because your thirsty or because your bored and it’s a habit to feel hunger when your bored to give you something to do. Many reason “hunger” feelings come about not always because you need to eat. -
I don't understand this site?
sassypants replied to catnapper's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Topics move off the first page very very quickly so sometimes they are missed. Also a lot of the same topics are post if not daily every couple of days sometimes you feel like your on repeat typing the same answers to the same questions over and over again. Search function works but isn’t used very much it seems. Its not to be rude or ignore anyone but if a title is or seem the same as something you posted on you overlook it. Or if you have posted about the topic 5 times that week you just might not feel like posting a 6th time thinking hey they will see it in the other 5 threads about the same thing. -
Did I stretch out my sleeve?
sassypants replied to Alyssa Perseverance Dixon's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Its actually a lot harder to stretch it than you think without the scare tactic put on your by the doctors they would tell you its very difficult to do and you have to abuse it over a extended period of time before you stretch it. For example I was told how to stretch mine out by one of my surgeons because I have a small sleeve he said I would have to drink carbonated drinks all day every day for months and month to get some stretch out of it. It sounds to me like you were sick as in a virus or something you wouldn’t feel swelling restriction and pain for sleeve stretching it’s a gradual thing not a overnight all of a sudden thing like you inflated a balloon with air. -
Some don’t like the acidity in fruit same with fruit juice I was told no citrus fruits no skins for the first few weeks and not to have fruit juice without mixing it with 2 parts Water to dilute it. In my mushy stage I stewed fruit easy to do just cook it down with a little water in its own juice or you can add a little apple juice for sweetness and if you really really have to you can add a little sugar/sweetener for added sweetness but you really shouldn’t need to your stewing fruit not making jam lol

Just a little side note adding bananas, mushrooms, white Beans, spinach to your diet will boost your potassium a lot. Personally all of them things feature several times a week in my diet I throw spinach in anything I possibly can love love love mushrooms so again I if I can I will put them in anything I can and bananas is the easiest fruit for me to eat so that’s a couple of times a week for me. Sometimes a natural intake absorbs better than a supplement and all of them things are good for you too with other benefits so that’s a plus! Hope all is well and no more seizures accrue.
