    Drinking while eating

bit of a long explanation but its real interesting: I watched this nutrition show a few years ago and this always stuck with me they went to a army base and give half of them rice veg chicken and a glass of water for lunch the other half got exactly the same amount of food only they blended it up altogether as a soup. They did some kinda scan before the meal on them all then right after to see the capacity of the stomach then every 10mins after. The ones who had the rice chicken veg plus glass of water their stomachs emptied by half within 10mins the soup eaters were still full. Anyway as time went on the soup people had food in their stomachs far longer than the food eaters. It was to show how water washes out food and also the nest way to keep soldiers fuller for longer to have more fuel to work off while out in the field. It always stuck with me and I found it really interesting. So for us having a op and going broth to thicker is not only because we are sore and healing and pureeing the food means its already halfway done in being broken down but soup also sits for longer keeping us full and not being hungry plus look what you blended up set that out all on a plate that’s a complete meal you can not get in the early stages and all you have to do is sip on it and get all the good stuff. My house we blend up soup all the time non veg lovers have no clue whats in it if you blend it and will still eat it lol

    3 days post op

Congrats! Just wanna give a tiny bit of advice watch the bowel movement I’ve had a horror story like BAD and little minor not so bad ones all right at the start so take something to help I drank a glass of prune juice a day after my horror story to not have it ever happen again. Its not uncommon 3 days out to not go then you do and its pretty much the runs because your all liquid all the time plus meds after that stage is the constipated stage a lot of us have horror stories you can read on the forums so plan ahead to not have one lol Happy birthday for tomorrow!!

    Protein Shake Sickness

I didn’t have that problem but what I had before and after sounds the same. I had bad IBS before and I am lactose intolerant. With the ibs it got to the point where it felt like the second I ate 1 forkful of food it was rushing through me and out. Started with stomach rumbles pangs gurgles then I would feel cramping pains this is the intestines contracting to pass the food through at a extremely rapid rate and well out the other end in pretty much water form every time. Would make me feel sick like I wanted to puke because of all the cramping going on and say I ate about 6 forkfuls of food it would do all this ibs reactions for 2-3 hours after a VERY lengthy time considering what little I ate. If I ate a big massive meal you’re talking 4-6 hours. Add in the lactose intolerance if I had anything dairy add in more cramping and pain. Fun fact never knew about the lactose intolerance as I never had that much even in a week to put 2 and 2 together so my pre op diet of all milk had me in so much pain after 4 days I was about to go to hospital with what we thought was my appendix when I called the bariatric department and they told me stop immediately that sounds exactly like lactose intolerance! After surgery you can be lactose intolerant for a few months it’s pretty common so this might be your problem you can try lactose free alternatives like soy or what I use alpro hazelnut milk its made from hazelnuts not rice soy etc Also our taste buds change after the op mine went super sweet every single protein powder I sampled before was disgusting to me after so I had to start again and found 1 I like not one brand ONE flavour from a brand lol So for the past 20 months I have had the exact same tasting shake few times a day every day. I did buy sugar free flavoured syrups to change up the taste at the start but I settled on hazel nut milk that I use with a PhD chocolate orange flavoured powder. I gave away about $200 worth of powder and ready to drink protein shakes because they tasted gross after the op. Lastly you could be reacting to the type of protein in the powder so maybe try different types. Having something every day your not very tolerant of is far different to tasting it a few days here and there before had think me with dairy years I just put it down to my ibs as I didn’t consume enough for it to enter my mind. Another fun fact the op “cured” my ibs a nice little side effect they wasn’t sure what would happen if I would appear to have like a bypass even though it’s a sleeve because of how bad it was before but not totally gone now no idea why but it works for me! Only change on thing at a time to know for sure so if your testing lactose intolerance cut out all dairy sugars from your diet for about 4 days see how it goes if its still happen then change something else like the type of protein your consuming etc If you change everything right away you wont know what t is as your changing more than one factor. Good luck!

    TOM Consumption Increases?

I never had a period for over 7 years before the op I do now and only 1 time did I go lala for chips I am a carb lover I would inhale maize chips if I could when its my TOM I just want them. I absentmindedly once opened a bag and before I paid attention to what I was doing over the past hour half the bag was gone lol I guess that’s considered a slider food because that’s the only time I have eaten that much and not felt sick! I had to give them to my sister to stop me eating the rest!

How long should it take to eat?

Yeah it was!! Lol!! I've struggled all day with posting because I know everyone's post op diets are so different and I didn't want to be bombarded with a bunch of "omg, you're eating that?!!" I have questioned it myself, but am following Dr's orders re: food I'm eating. I'm open to advice, just trying to learn and don't want to mess up. Thanks!! I tried not to but I was a little shocked lol And I am one who says listen to what you’re told! I am also in the uk I think we are told different things a lot of the time to the us. I remember my first few weeks holey moley I could barely take in liquid the pain and general ugh feeling if I tried food I think I would have cried. Plus egg is a massive no no for me the reaction I had when I tried it I think about having that reaction 9 days after my op and it makes me shudder lol Dunno about others but as far as shakes go I was told not by my nut but by the department head and my actual consultant that I would be drinking shakes for about 2 years I could continue to drink them if I wished as there is no harm in them and the Protein is vital for keeping muscle mass as well as everything else during this process. I’m told the same things as all protein first that I can get a substantial amount via food in every meal so its not a instead of actual food thing more of a topup to make sure my levels never drop and i am always in a healthy consumption range. I have a smaller sleeve so food does take me a long time and it’s a moody cow of a sleeve too it likes certain thing and hates others like I can not eat when I wake up I can’t even take a sip of Water it acts up and is mad at me for hours I have to warm mine up with a cup of tea miss that tea and i have hell to pay lol I eat the exact same thing for Breakfast every day because I tried other things the moody cow acted up! Just wanted to give you a little food for thought (yeah I looked it up and worked it out lol) There is 6.29g in one boiled egg to get 81.77g of protein in a day you would need to eat 13 eggs it takes you a hour so that’s 13 hours of the day just eating eggs to get that in! That’s a lot of time eating to get protein in that’s why we top up with the shakes as it’s an easier way to get in what we need at the takes forever to eat stage. Still not going to tell you what to do its not my place, but now you know why I was a little shocked.

How long should it take to eat?

9 days out and your already on soft food? (that was passive judgement about what your being told lol i know i try not to do that but i couldn;t help it! lol) i was still in clear liquid at that stage so as a reference point i can;t help you. but yes it takes a hell of a long time to eat.
  7. you shouldn’t be on solid food yet it takes so much more effort for your still healing still swollen still pi*sed off stomach to break down. The reason you break food down in a puree form is to do half the hard work for you and give your stomach a break from working so hard to deal with it while healing. Plus it works differently now over half of it was tossed away glands that release hormones and certain stomach acids etc are gone it has to learn how to break down what your putting into it all over again from the start. I know it can be boring and you feel like your mouth forgot how to work as it doesn’t chew but its only a really small length of time in the scheme of things and you need to be as kind to your sleeve as possible while its healing.
  8. You could have water nausea or not like cold or room temp which is what I had. Cold/room temp felt like I was dropping stones into my stomach and then I would get the foamy spit up from the water so I had warm water (blugh) in hospital and just drank warm things like decaf tea when home.

    Couple recipe ideas

ok so i made the turkey veggie muffins! see attached pic also did a sweet potato side but thats my mums plate and she didnt have them. they taste pretty good i added alot of garlic and onion powder to my turkey for more flavour i also added carrot to the mix i meant to add spinach but i forgot lol the salad dressing is lemon juice oil sugar dill mint garlic don;t ask me how much i just added a bit of this bit of that shook it all up poured it on put it in the fridge to marinade the flavour then strained it out so it wasn;t swamped in dressed put it back in the bowl to serve. Very sleeve friendly I had no issue with them I ate 2 with no pain heavy breathing or oh god don’t puke feeling! Ps I topped half with bbq sauce half with ketchup the bbq was miles better
  10. My sister is the one who drew my attention to this after watching a tv show (not sure which) it said in the show that a lot of people mistake the feeling of being hungry for being thirsty its years of mistaking this feeling so we eat instead when we should be drinking something. so I googled it and thought I would share as it may help a lot of people who are feeling hungry it could very well just be thirst instead. it doesn’t say directly in this link but my sister said on the tv show they suggested drinking a glass of water or juice when its not a meal time hungry feeling and wait 20mins see if that feeling goes away. so here is a link about it http://www.livestrong.com/article/510463-how-body-mistakes-hunger-for-thirst/

    I said NO chocolates!

People do just forget honestly nothing has changed for him so he has no idea how you feel what you go through etc I live with my mum 1 sister and 1 brother almost 2 years out honestly they forget all the time and sometimes just don’t think for example mum will be like oh I chopped up insert a bunch of veg to go with the chicken and that rice from yesterday- I say you left me veg on its own right- oh s*it no sorry I forgot. She honestly did shes not sabotaging me at all just didn’t think to set some aside because for years rice with anything hell yeah I would eat it I LOVE rice I just don’t eat it any more. I do a lot of the cooking so they have had to adopt my diet they now rarely get Pasta rice or potatoes with dinner because I don’t eat it I rarely make it as a side for them either lol People who haven’t had the op don’t really understand the A. not allowed it and B. can’t tolerate it part, they think we can have whatever we want just in really small amounts. Honestly I always have a bad taste in my mouth when people suggest even slightly that someone’s marriage or relationship should end consider it not right or you are being abused in some manner even slightly when they don’t do exactly what you do or mind you and what they say eat how they workout etc after the op. Your partner HASN’T change not one little bit that’s not their fault WE have its us who have to work things out all they are doing is being who they are as usual your just reacting differently to these same things than you would have before the op. Yes I do know some partners who really do sabotage this some to the point I want to punch them in the face repeatedly, but a lot of the time its lack of understanding and doing nothing wrong but simply being who they always were and not changing.

    My Trainer said....

What I have learned through all my medical crap is not many people in the medical profession and others know about this at alllllllll. Ok so there is ONE GP at my normal doctors surgery that knows a bit about what to do after wls. That’s out of 15 doctors so I can only go to one, only call one, only have one give me decent advice on other meds I am taking or illnesses etc I was given really bad ended up going to hospital advice not long after my op because of a GP. Also I was dealing with other medical issues again saw 3 people only ONE knew what different steps I had to take unlike others after this op. I can not just go to A&E if I have a problem because they don’t know the right things for me I either call the bariatirc team who then give me the name and pager number of a bariattic doctor wohs working that day or on call and have the reception page them to deal with me or when I say oh I had the op I wait 3 hours while they try and find this very same person to deal with me as they can’t. My physio tells me to do this or that not for wls but to deal with my back, hip and knees my gym instructor tells me oh its ok no do this and this (I listen to my physio lol) The gym instructor tells me oh you can do this eat this drink this its fine (I listen to my bariatric team not the gym instructor) Its so confusing and crazy! Its like the left hand doesn’t know what the right is doing at times, its like how confused we get researching you can read 20 different opinions on the same thing and not have a clue what is right. What I have learned from this is basically the bariatric team kinda go by the first 8 months count then the rest is a bonus but they tend to not look past that mostly. This is from being told every time I went to a appointment after 8 months in shocked tones your still losing weight?!? Me asking if that’s not the idea them saying nono of course it is just its unusual to have not stopped by now hmm well that’s very good! No joke I have heard that same line about 10 times! One new doc I only ever saw once told me its unusual and I have done so well actually beyond predicted expectations he would use me in his top 3 patients to show others what they can do. Confusing as this is what we are meant to do right? Why is it SO unusual?? Sooooo from this I gather (no not told by anyone its just what I picked up on seeing 4 doctors 3 times a month for a year then it spacing out to monthly) that they want us to be eating just above starvation mode and working out like demons drinking Water and shakes inbetween to never have a empty stomach moment or feeling hungry because THIS is the rapid weightloss period they bank on for success and the rest is a bonus. If your still losing weight after this time hey they wont really change the rules because its working a “if it aint broke don’t fix it” type of deal. Not saying the stats are BS but they tend to not go past 8 months for a reason, be it we eat more, we workout less the numbers aint so hot. Here in the uk you don’t automatically get plastic surgery you can not even apply for it till you have stayed the same weight give or take 5lbs for at least 6 months then you have to maintain that weight for a further 2 years before you can even apply for it because people gain weight so they don’t want to spend the money giving plastics if you go back to old habits and gain weight again. This is such a confusing process with so much information I take what works for me and do it my way. Maybe they want us to lose a extra 10-15lbs by making our heads explode LOL

    nothing makes me puke

I puked a hell of a lot and I still do puke but not as much I wish I didn’t! For me I always had a sensitive stomach anyway like my sister and I had the same food for lunch infact she ate half of mine when I was done I got food poisoning she was fine. If anything is even slightly on the turn I would puke and get sick from it, I had a acid issue before too which made me puke a lot, also the last 3 years before my op I developed IBS which also give me stomach issues and if that wasn’t enough I was also lactose intolerant lol This op actually cured my IBS and its not AS sensitive as it was I just puke for different reasons now lol

    slow loading forum?

its fine today and not in the us for it to be snow lol it was driving me nuts willing the page to just loadddd lol
  15. Completely off topic and couldn’t find a section for it but is anyone else experiencing really slow page loads? timed it a few times and its taking well over 1min to load a page sometimes it times out. this isn’t normal for me I have fibre optic fast broadband so 1min+ page loads is super slow just wondering if its just me (other sites loading like normal)
  16. My taste buds have changed before the op I was super sensitive to both salt and pepper so much so I could taste it in mayo like I added a lot of it lol After the op every thing is super sweet like I added a1lbs of sugar to it that’s not as bad any more but I still think things are sweeter tasting than they should be or others think. As far as energy goes I was on a cpap before the op for 8 months before so I was tired all the time before because of the constant not breathing when I sleep thing lol After the op I would sleep for 2-4 hour at a time that’s pretty much how its continued I “nap” sleep rather than get in a full 6 hours or more in one sitting.

    Drinking while eating

The only way to get ride of it and not absorb it is to puke it right back up- which I am NOT suggesting at all but that’s just the facts of it. Even then you will never get all of it up. If you eat cake enjoy the cake at the time of eating it or don’t eat it at all lol
  18. God I am about to be one of them know-it-all-pain-in-A-people so please do not take this the wrong way as I just have to say this lol Body builders and competitive eaters both use lettuce to stretch their stomachs. I know plenty of body builders, 4 of my friends are professional personal trainers and I went on a bunch of body building forums when I was checking out Protein powders its commonly talked about as a thing they do. Not saying at all you did exactly this I still stand by my personal onion that you come out of your op with a bigger sleeve. Within the first year you shouldn’t push/test the sleeve to see if you can eat more in one sitting than they tell you too to know. this is your honest to god crucial time in weightloss the more you put in the harder you have to work to not only burn it off but also burn stored fat. Generally the weightloss will start to slow down soon and be smaller and smaller numbers month to month. Every body is different I know that and we all do whats right and works for us, just be aware.

    Sleeve size? new/post op

A shake is still thicker than Water its like Soup its doesn’t flick right through. Soup actually sits in the stomach a lot longer and takes a long time to digest even if it is a liquid so that much shake that soon out I would say its safe to say you do have a bigger sleeve.

    Mushrooms and salads?

I can’t remember when I started eating them but I love mushrooms and eat them all the time like 4 times a week or more lol Salad meh its not so friendly with me so I don’t eat it much
  23. Looking over my book I kept the first year the ONLY time I put my weight down was on the 23rd of august 2012 I personally measured my body parts inch loss monthly than keeping track of my weight. so lets see by 2 months and 8 days out I had lost 106lbs from day of op in total pre and post op 119lbs. I don’t have any other stats from any other months to tell you more. I don’t calorie count never have so no help there either.
  24. Me too! I never set one they asked me the same thing I said ummm smaller healthy? don;t actually have a goal do i need one? they said no its better ot not have a goal as it could be somethign i never reach and i am being far more realistic this way as i will be happy with the results regardless of what the final one is. I only added the one to my ticker because well it needs one and it’s the average weight for a woman my height lol
