All self preservation goes out the door after what we have gone through. Plus, I am a nurse so I see both sides now. get better... t

yes, thoracenteces will make you feel better as well as antibiotics, I had major complications and the first time in the ER draining my lungs I felt nothing, but later in the hospital, it hurt, plus I had hospital acquired pneumonia so drains went in. Thank you for sharing your experience as it reminds us that we know our bodies better than anyone and we should speak up. I hope your recovery is uneventful!

I struggled, too. I hear your frustration and pain. My ordeal was just over 3 years ago and i spent about 7 weeks in the hospital and on/off J tube for 14 months. What I can tell you is just keep speaking to your health care team and push for other meds, etc that you think might help after you have researched everything. Go through my threads if you are up to it. I still take Protonix twice a day as well at Zofran 8 mg twice per day. My appetite is better and now I can start improving my stamina for cardio and get my weight loss moving again. I guess I just want you to know that it really does get better. I was soooo tired of hearing that - but it is the truth. In the end, this will be behind you and your focus on physical and mental recuperation will begin. Please, let family or friends help you out. You will appreciate it and it will allow you to get the rest you need. I hope to see you updates. This is a great forum so reach out to us......you are not alone that is for sure. This group helped me a lot. I am a nurse but it did not matter - what we all need is support. Get better -check in and rest! Trish

Constant nausea, morning sickness feeling, allergies, post nasal drip
NORCALRN replied to Jen - a work in progress's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It sounds like you are on the right track regarding the allergy component. There is another med instead of Zofran. It is Anzamet but it is on backorder (no generic yet). For me, it is less sedating than 4mg or 8mg Zofran. I still am suffering from stomach issues 3 years out, but it is getting better I guess. Since Flonase is not systemic, it is less drying to your nasal passages so I would make sure you take that. I hope you feel better! -
Is / was your nutritionist all that helpful?

Mine was no help but I ended up with a J tube so for the most part, i did not need her. -
Question about surgery in Mexico
NORCALRN replied to Gina.marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had an EKG, labs only upon preparing for surgery upstairs. and the doctor assumed my personal report on my health was correct (which it was) but no labs, etc. Dr. Almanza - 2012 did my sleeve.Oh - I did not even get weighed! I went first out of the 8 of us because I was the smallest (needed to lose 65#). He took his last patient in at midnight and he started with me I think around 1pm. -
no....I do not eat much anyway, especially as the day goes on. I cannot say I have overeaten...it is not possible for me to get that much solid food in. i still utilize liquids mostly. egg whites in the morning. I concur with a previous member's post about the terrible feeling of food being stuck in the esophagus....it just sits there until I vomit. I see my GI MD next week and I am just 3 years out (7-27-12). sometimes I will try a solid and it stays down but hurts and I am always nauseous - the next time I try that same food, I vomit. I never know. I pretty much do not try to eat in public.
-
It is the clear mucous-like spit or "slime" that likely remains n the stomach..it lines it to prevent acid irritation, assist in digestion, etc. It happened to me for bout 2 plus years and still occurs. vomiting often goes along with it. Sannah - I know what you mean in your post. eat like you should, but watch out cuz here it comes right back up!!!! SLIME good for the stomach, but bad in excess....not fun at all!

Would really like to talk with another person who has a stricture.
NORCALRN replied to Sannah09's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Sannah beautiful children!! I think your original picture had a banana phone - right??!!! I can completely understand when you say that you feel that you should be able to do more, help out, live a better life....I am in and out of bed for days and cannot work much ( RN, BSN). Just had more labs done today. So sick and tired of being tired!!!! Nausea is unrelentless and I finished my antibiotics for the H. Pylori and within 2 days, pain again so they think that was not really the problem although it did help with epigastric pain so maybe the ulcers are better. I just know that something is wrong. I see a therapist like you, and I am grateful for that. I guess I just wanted to reach out to you and let you know that others care and want you to get better! trish -

NORCALRN replied to Sannah09's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
oh Sannah I wish I could make it better for you. My quality of life has been changed forever, too.Work (RN, BSN), money issues depression. I am sure you are familiar with all of it. Your last post made me so sad....I hope you are not alone...you have a child i think? keep reaching out - here, family, friends wherever. I know that I will never be the same physically and will always be monitored for malnutrition I do not want a j tube ever again). Chronic fatigue, not knowing if you are gonna throw up, gastroparesis, cyclic vomiting syndrome...sheesh. BUT, we need to keep going. get up and do what we need to do for ourselves! So, I am here for you as well as other I am sure. The post from Kathy (proudgrammy) is full of wisdom. you just get through this one minute at at time....take it in, breath and start again. trish (that one is me pre-barf period)!!!!heehhee -
I would keep trying different brands. Most places such as GNC will let you exchange it if you need to. I still use crushed ice in mine. I have to have things I drink really cold, or I gag. And yes, sometimes it creates a spasam due to the cold. But really, keep buying new ones. unjury seems popular. hang in there......it does get better!

not really, even with my ongoing complications. regret is something i do not want to feel. moving on, working on health, I only had 65# to lose and went to Mexico..but that is not why i had such serious issues - so if you or someone is contemplating..go for it. If you have diabetes, high bp, etc, this surgery may save you in so many ways down the road. do your research, feel confident about your choice......it is all up to you!

3 years out-now with new concerns over old complications
NORCALRN posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So after a long complicated journey......to be found somewhere in my past posts, I have concerns that I might have some scarring/stenosis or hiatal hernia. I have major fullness after one bite, bloating pain and that darn nausea! I take Protonix, Probiotics and Anzamet for nausea. Also Luvox, gabapentin and Klonapin. Plus, I never recovered from the fatigue. I had a jejujostomy for about 14 months or so....due to malnutrition. I am a home health nurse - while I finish up grad school, so I can set my own schedule since I cannot work full time due to my symptoms. I am afraid I am malnourished again (or still). I went off grains and lost 8lbs which is good cuz I was doing sliding food, so I gained a bit, but not anything terrible. I eat only egg whites with cheese in the am, and that is so I can take my morning meds, otherwise I get sick on an empty stomach. I really don't eat much else..maybe 2 bites of dinner (vegetarian for 30 years). I have the right Protein powder, a new one for GI health and I cannot even get those down. I should be well below my goal weight - I know I do not take in enough calories. I think my body is in starvation mode and is holding on to whatever it gets. Anyway, my big fear is going back to my doctor. My PCP vs my surgeon? Not my GI doctor b/c he will refer me back to someone else. So I guess I better email my surgeon.....here we go again. I just want to feel good. not tired. FYI - I see a therapist 2x/month - so that is helping the emotional part. Any feedback? Thanks. -
hi Sannah I just posted an update (somewhere)! I hope you are doing better. This sucks I know. Life on hold AGAIN. Miserable is a good way to describe how I feel, too. But we are strong and can handle this. See if you can find my recent post - literally just a minute ago I updated. keep posting- we all want you better! Trish

3 years out-now with new concerns over old complications
NORCALRN replied to NORCALRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Had a visit with the MD covering my PCP (very nice guy), he ordered labs, a CT all STAT on Monday. nothing except scar/atelaectesis at the base of my left lung (likely from the massive hospital acquired pneumonia). Positive for H. Pylori so I start 2 antibiotics today as well at RX of Prilosec which I already take Protinix. Hope this helps....ulcer and infection does explain my issues but I still think something else is going on. He also believes I have cyclic vomiting syndrome....I am glad I have a really great therapist for CBT and biofeedback. Plus this forum has always been so supportive. So that is it. My update. Now if I can just rally the energy for a shower I can finish an assignment for class. It has been difficult these weeks but I am not missing any class work (MSN with an emphasis on Public Health). on line thank goodness! for those that have followed me and commented with ecouragement a big thank you. for those still struggling, we are in this together! trish -
3 years out-now with new concerns over old complications

i emailed my pcp...just waiting til she gets back 7-7-15..... -
Sannah We were at the same spot - same time with somewhat similar struggles. Sorry you might have to deal with this again. I, too, am wondering if I have some new issues brought on by old complications. Please keep us posted regarding your outcomes. I am sure you are feeling disillusioned by this. Hang in there. remember how strong you were and still are!!!

Cannot eat! Wasting away
NORCALRN replied to bellabloom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sorry that this is happening. does your doctor know? sounds like you are on the road to malnutrition if not already there. one can be malnourished even if overweight. what is your wt/bmi? if critical - maybe time for feeding tube - J tube/Mickey or something other than PICC line. start first with your MD. I struggled with same symptoms and my GI doc did not believe me until he popped in right before a nasojejunum tube was to be placed. he was shocked when he saw me. after i was strong enough for a J tube (about 31 days later), off to the OR. had a j tube for about 14 months maybe. (you can find my thread if interested). In any case, advocate for yourself or present to the ER if your doctor won't see you. If you have been on your stated diet - it will reflect in your appearnace, lab work, etc. Please follow up with your providers............................and let us know your progress. -
Sorry for the rough time. Do you have anti nausea meds? Zofran/companizine/---you can get Zofran in disintergrating pills and compazine comes in suppository form if you cannot get meds down. I sympathize with you. I wont get into details from my sleeve in 2012 (you can find my threads) but it is likely due to anesthesia...let it work thru and follow your doctor instructions.....hang in there. you can do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the rx can really help. sometimes our bodies just do not like the surgical process. sip sip sip!

Sleeved April 30th complication
NORCALRN replied to stevecfo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sorry to hear of your complications. I had a splenic infarct with an abcess tunneling to liver among other issues (you can find my history under "complications" if interested,), it does happen...no reason for mine except during exploratory surgery, the omentum was placed too heavily on the tip of the spleen which blocks blood flow. Long journey but you can get through this......! oh, i had a low BMI and went to Mexico.. -
I have had kaiser bay area all my life. i needed to lose about 65lbs- no co morbidites. they laughed when i asked..you are not fat enough is what i was told. hit Mexico 7/2012. kaiser took care of my complications (see my old posts if interested). do your homework, go back through old threads...you will find great info there. good luck with your decision...whatever it may be!

Constant Headaches 7 weeks post op
NORCALRN replied to Kmgaustin's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
often it is from dehydration, even if you think you are taking in enough water. also, general anesthesia stays in the body for months and that could be contributng. check in with your own local doctor just to make sure. surgery is really hard on the body. I hope you feel better!
