Leak Survivors - A Little Help!

My "leak" was never visualized..but due to abcesses on spleen -fistula to the liver-plus pneumonina, fever, effusin, thoracentecis that drained 2+ containers of pus that grew out strep, empynema, etc.....38 days in patient, one explor lap, jpeg feeding tube, interventional radiology - they even put TPA in them to promot drainage. - without enough meds. god how i hate chest tubes and drains!!!!!!!!!!!i am! Unfortunately, for the last 3 weeks i cannot keep any food down and liquids either shoot right out or i urp them up. will have endoscopy this coming week. likely stenosis. I WILL NOT EAT at all now. so done with living with my face in barf bowl! hope no leak. feel cruddy and i so scared to find out something that keeps me in the the hospital. outpatient - no problem. i would even go back on feeding tube which requires OR general surgery. i am THAT desperate to feel better. SO i hope that you all are on the mend. I sympathize so much with you. Hope 2013 brings health to everyone!!!!!!!!!!
  2. I was sleeved 7-24-12 and experiencing them same. plus, nothing sounds good again. made it through complications but last 3 weeks "urping" and some vomiting. my GI doc returns tomorrow. that is good that you are getting protein. my doctors told me that some people react differently to this procedure, and your body may be struggling, too. sounds like you are on the right track. congrats! as long as you have no fever or alarming sxs, as my MD said.. "just push through this". easier said than done!!!!! Enjoy your day!
  3. -sleeved 7-24-12 (survived serious complications) and now experiencing some GI problems. regardless of what i eat, how i eat,etc.....after my first bite of food and sometimes liquids, i get nauseaus, sweaty and experience and increase in my heart rate. i have reverted to "urping" and vomiting daily. no diarrhea. i will contact my health care providers. my weight has stayed the same for almost 3 weeks. i am 5-5, started at 205.5 and down to 164. The remainder of my weight is all in my belly. no more feeding tube. the TPN and formula (6 weeks at home) was so calorically dense i feel i am a bit behind my goals. more importantly, i am not getting the proper nutrition due to the nausea. it sounds like dumping syndrome but i feel i do not create the triggers. i am a nurse. had a great home health nurse and NUT after coming home from my hospital. i know what/how to eat-drink, ect. i do feel rather poor. no fever. ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCE THIS???????????????? thank you for any feedback.
  4. I can sympathize. Stay positive and you will get through this. I spent 38 days in the hospital and home on feeding tube. Each day you will make small strides that add up quickly. I got so tired of hearing it, but it is true. I know your journey is rough.....YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. thank you for your quick response.....i def. need to gt back in with my PCP!
  6. great job!!!! your journey has begun!!!
  7. you are gonna do great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! post when you can.

Stomach Spasms - 1 Week Out

i still have significant pain with food/fluids. jpeg might have to be replaced (fell out). every bite regardless of what it is - hurts- for about 5 minutes. enough to bring tears. post op temp of fluids, etc might be good to monitor for a bit. my situation was different, but i empathize with you. hang in there!!!!!!!!!!

    Mexico

i wonder where one would locate those stats on those that attend medical school in the US that have citizenship elsewhere. they, too must pay for his/her education, apply for funding, etc. the beauty of being an adult is that one can take responibility for decisions and choices....hopefully without being judged. but even if there is poor tolerance, it sure feels good to know that independence is a wonderful thing, regardless of what others say/feel. we are lucky to have what we have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Mexico

i went to mx b/c i do not qualify for bariatric surgery(no co-morbidities, etc). 7 months of planning. about 2 weeks after surgery - i had a fever - kaiser did exploratory lap and gave me hosp. aquired pneumonia which led to everything else. wish anesthia had just perfused my lungs a bit harder - that would have likely prevented the crisis that followed. i, too have worked in the medical field (my family too) for about 20 years. i have my BSN, PHN and consider myself well-educated. kaiser covered everything.....i owe then $30 dollars!! i am very grateful for health care and very lucky. done with the feding tube at least for now. it might have to be replaced....its a wait and see. gotta eat and no sliding food!!

    Nauseous Mornings?

i, too still have days with nausea. even wake up around 2am with it. it has gotten better. fluids help. my sleeve was 7-24-12. trying for all orals - no tube feedings for 14 days now so hopefully it will be removed early dec or late november. my stomach still hurts when i eat - about 80% of the time - it passes though. and my doc agrees that i need to just push through the discomfort so my esophagus remembers how to function. you will find your groove with your triggers and aids....give it time. trial and error i guess. i still wear a scopalimine patch.....i swear it helps. i was in bed for 38 days so i think being upright now that i am home triggers nausea with certain movements. keep us posted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. marcia i had a call from dr fisher -richmond doc...just checking on me. he made me feel so good. he always follows through, too. hang in there. i know it it is hard when your fam/friends doubt your decision -but follow your instincts. dr fisher would not allow you to have the surgery if he felt you are not a canidate. stay true to your heart and you will continue to do great. be nice to yourself...you deserve the best. trish
  17. yeah, fisher is great. he said if i go 4 weeks without tube feeding, no vomiting and maintaining enough nourishment orally, my jpeg can come out. i am on day 10 but having a hard time eating. i am down 33 and have about 35 to go. the bariatric team at richmond is great. you all can do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Water Makes Me Sick

i am only now able to drink water but it has to be "just right"..... i drink vitamin water zero - sometimes mixed up or watered down. i was sleeved 7-24-12 (major complications). temperature matters, too. keep trying ----it will suddenly be ok. its a waiting game. just stay hydrated.
  19. dr baggs is really nice. he did my explor lap ( kaiser did not do my sleeve - i did notqualify). anyway, congrats!!!!!!!!!
  20. oh..a feeding tube that is placed in the jejunum..so it by passes the stomach nd allows the gut to to rest.it take a lot of work..flushing, set up, etc. but better than home with a picc line on TPN. i hate that stuff. worst diarrhea ever. although i am eating, i still have belly pain when i eat o rdrink but i have to re-teach my esophagus how to work so no sliding food. YOU CAN GET THROUGH THIS. I CRIED ALOT.....DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO MAKE YOURSELF COMFORTABLE. I SO FEEL WHAT YOU ARE GOING THRU.........I REALLY DO. keep posting plz!!! trish
  21. explor lap gave me hosp aquired pneumonia, pleural effusins, had abcess over spleen with fistula to liver with a smaller abcess, chest tube, drains, fevers, on TPN which gives massive diarrhea, a crappy picc line that wad psoitional to say the least, 6 visits to interventional radiology, 7 cts with contrast, movement disorder for 7 hours from iv promethazine ( constant nausea) nothing helped) i retched all the time.too much lovenox gave huge bloody noses,, lost count on xrays, 5 antibiotics at once, pca with dilaudid which i refused about 10 days prior to discharge. i do not remember the first 2 weeks or so. i do remember admission, some great nurses and staff. my family is amazing. my mom stayed overnite a lot with me. i sobbed everyday i am told plus, no oral liquids or ice for 3weeks! ugh!!!!!!!on a happier note, i am weaning off my jpeg, trying food that i have to chew(no sliding food) and everyday improving. i stagger my chores and errands. too much one day puts me in bed the next day. doctors say i have the worst luck cuz what could go wrong ------did. but again, no clear proof of a leak. it is assumed due to my symptoms.weight is coming off slower than i thought it would. TPN and my tube feedings are so calorically dense but i am down 30 with about 35 to go. i will get there!!!!! as a nurse, being a patient reminded me of why i went into nursing in the first place. i feel very lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jpeg might be removed end of december!!!
  22. i can relate. take one day at a time. i spent 38 days in the hosp with critical issues but with no true leak was ever located. if you end up with an extended stay, it will be very hard - but you can get thru this...... i am home - feeding tube jpeg - getting better each day! you will, too!!!!!!! keep us posted - we do care!!!!!!!
  23. dr fisher is wonderful. he is following me although i had to go outside kaiser for sleeve. i\he also did my exp lap 10 days after sleeving. excellent physician. you guys will do great!!
  24. he is at cpmc, right? office in novato? heard great things about him!
  25. 38 days in the hospital. exploratory lap looking for leak left me with massive pneumonia, pleural effusions, 5 antibiotics, abcesses over spleen and liver from the small leak, chest tube drains, picc line, fevers, i was told i had a sub clinical leak. discharged with jpeg which requires non-stop care. home health nurses 4 days per week, genrally just bad luck. thank goodness for my family. i do not remember the first 2 weeks or so, which is a blessing.the tpn and tube feedings slowed my weight loss......down 25#. surgery was 7-24. i wish evryone the best with the journey!!!!!!!!
