Lipo after the sleeve?
erp replied to Mommysonadiet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't had lipo but I will if I get plastics for skin removal or implants. I don't think lipo in of itself is a good weight loss strategy. Just my opinon though. -
Went hiking the other day after a big rain but I was unprepared- didn't have waterproof shoes. We can up to an area that had a lot of standing water, my hubby turned to me and asked if I needed a piggy back ride. I told him no, I was scared I would hurt him. He just scoffed and insisted it would be ok. I hopped on and off we went, he had no problems carrying me. I felt like a princess.

Children's vitamins are labeled for both children and adult consumption by the FDA. They are appropriate to take as an adult. Flintstones complete with iron (purple bottle) are recommended by my Nut. There is debate on the efficacy/quality of gummy vitamins. My Nut does not recommend them as of yet.

I think it's a great option. The best exercise is the one you do consistently.

Suggestions needed for lactose free protein drinks?
erp replied to shirlyn's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are many vegetarian protein powders available at health food stores that contain pea protein or other lactose free proteins- Vega is one brand I have seen there. -
I like several brands, I look for low sugar, low or no sugar alcohols, and high protein- this rules out a lot of "body builder" type of bars. Other than that, go for best taste. I second the Quest bar recommendation.

Whey isolate is the best protein. Strength training is a good choice for exercise to build muscle but there is no guarantee regarding loose skin.

Steps to take for approval?!
erp replied to jessr0se's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will need to call your insurance directly regarding your policy specific requirements. Do not rely on your PCP or WLC- they use the "most common" guidelines. For example, my policy did not have a 90 day attempted WL requirement. -
1000 mcg sublingual B12 3xs a week. You may also need to supplement your iron. 36 mg minimum but up to120 mg if anemic.

I was told to take a high potency multi with minerals 2xs a day for the first year, then once a day thereafter. A b12 sublingual- 1000 mcg, 3xs a week. calcium citrate (not carbonate aka Tums) with Vit D- 1500 mg a day. Iron 65-120 mg. Sounds like a lot but it boils down the this for me: I take calcium 2xs a day, 2 Flintstones chewable w/ iron a day and B12 a few times a week.

Losing pounds but not sizes
erp replied to Jaguilar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When looking at sizing charts, plus size clothes are made for a larger range in measurement- meaning the bust measurement difference in a 22 vs. a 20 can be 2-4 inches. Whereas the bust measurement in missy clothes range from 1-2 inches. Essentially, it takes less change/ weight loss to go down a size the smaller you get. Initially it took me 30 lbs to lose a size, now 5-10 lbs equals a dress size for me. -
Changed my goal weight...now I only have 13 lbs to go...good idea or bad idea?
erp replied to marfar7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I initially set two goals: a goal of 140 and stretch goal of 130. I hit 140 about a month ago and like where I am. Ultimately I'd like to maintain at around 135 and will work toward it but I'm not working too hard so it will take awhile. Go with how you feel and look. At 138, my tummy is mostly flat, I wear a size small (4/6) so I learned I didn't have to lose as much as I thought. -
When you juice you do not drink the pulp or fiber. You can blend fruits and veggies in a high powered blender. Most refer to that as a smoothie. The benefit of juicing or smoothies is that it allows you to increase your nutrients beyond the small amounts we can eat now. Smoothies can help with constipation because of the fiber content and you can add Benefiber or similar to it.

Vets: foods you personally can't tolerate?
erp replied to NMJG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Fruit and vegetable skins bother me a bit sometimes. Refried beans feel like rocks in my stomach and spicy food gives me heartburn now. Other than that, I can eat anything. -
I have been strength training for 6 months and I think it has totally helped. I weight more than I'd like but I wear a smaller size than other people my weight because of lifting. Congrats & Go for it!

Informing my family and friends
erp replied to JulieA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Who you tell or not is up to you. However I think you probably have to tell your youngest kids if they are still at home. They are going to know something's going on when you get full off of three bites! I usually don't respond to these threads b/c I think telling or not is a personal decision however I was prompted by your remarks about giving up, hard work and perseverance. Not taking control of your health and weight IS giving up. We lose weight with the help of surgery but let me assure you that this journey is hard and will require work. Don't believe the "it's the easy way out" mentality. Sitting on your tush, overeating and gaining weight, now that is easy. WLS is the ultimate in perseverance because it changes your life forever. Good luck on your journey. -

I snacked on nuts early out and never had a problem. Now at over a year out, I have to watch it as I could eat 2-3 servings no problem. So eventually I stopped buying them.

What is a meal like after 6+ months
erp replied to Fuff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My meals look like they did pre-op but on a salad plate as opposed to a dinner plate. Yesterday lunch was a quarter of a stuffed chicken breast and about 1/3 -1/2 c of broccoli. I can eat anything just less of it. Some days however head hunger joins the fun and I eat all day or larger portions- e.g half a chicken breast. -
Resistance Band Exercises, anyone got some good ones?
erp replied to yoyo81's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can do great workouts with little to no equipment. Squats, lunges, sit ups, push ups, etc all provide a great workout. There are free workout apps for smart phones as well as videos online. If you have an Amazon Prime membership, they have free workout DVDs available to view. I like Bloglates (online), Couch to 5k (phone app) and just started doing Jillian Michaels' yoga workout on Amazon. Most fitness stores also have workout posters demonstrating resistance band moves. -
