I have been overweight and/or obese since I was in elementary school. My doctor had been on me for years to lose weight. I have tried every pill, potion, powder and plan out there. It would work and I would lose 30-40 pounds but eventually, all the pounds would come back and bring friends. I started comtemplating WLS about 4 years ago, while pregnant with my daughter. I realized that I was eating better food and smaller portions as I got bigger because my stomach was getting less room. It got me thinking that if I could make my stomach smaller, I might actually be able to lose weight. So the leap to WLS wasn't a big one. I did some research and thouhgt that it might be a good idea but didn't think I'd qualify because I didn't think I was heavy enough. I also didn't think my doctor was the type to go for it. Fast forward 2 years: I'm at my annual physical and I'm 15lbs heavier then the year before and had been dieting for most of the year! That was when he asked if I'd every considered bariatric surgery. And so began my journey. I spent a few months doing heavy research about it and where to go. I found 2 places that seemed like good places to go. I went to both information sessions to get a feel for them. I narrowed it down from there to 1. I did all the follow up they required. Called when I was done to make sure they had all the paperwork, a week later they called to tell me they didn't have anything. Gather it all up and re-sent. Called again to make sure they had it, I waited, and called and waited, and called... 6 months and never got a call back! I finally gave up and went looking for a new surgeon. That's when I found the Institute for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery(IMBS) at Abington and Dr. Noonan and colleagues and the rest of the staff. They have been a godsend. I had an appointment within 3 days of calling(March 28). 2 days after that I was meeting with the nutritionist and psychiatrist. I had to re-do all of the testing and appointments because too much time had passed (over 6 months). Before I could call them to check on the status of the result, they called me! I was shocked. May 17, I got the phone call informing me that my insurance was going to cover the surgery and to schedule my final pre-op appointment and class. I start my pre-op liquid diet in 4 days and my surgery is June 19. Countdown time! So, I counted: 11weeks 6 days from 1st appointment to surgery. Amazing!
