My thoughts on family and friends' lack of support
sonipez replied to musicfrommyheart's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Woooo hoooooo!! That's where I got my surgery done! Dr. Vivian Sanchez did mine, she has since started her own practice in Salem. But I've gotten follow up care from Dr. Schnieder, who is really nice! -
My thoughts on family and friends' lack of support
sonipez replied to musicfrommyheart's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Do not worry about what other people say! This is about you making the right choice for you and only you! When I decided to get banded I had to tell people. My mom who has always been SUPER CRITICAL of my weight was completely supportive...which shocked the hell out of me. There was one friend at work who was not supportive at all. And it really hurt my feelings. She would tell me about a friends cousin who had massive complications from a gastic bypass. She would tell me about all these people who had the surgery who didn't lose any weight at all. On and on... But here's the thing...I've lost over 50% of my excess weight. My blood pressure is down! According to my AC1 test, I am NOT at risk for diabetes. I made the right decision for me just as you are making the right decision for you. You have made a very brave decision...you have decided to change. You are daring to change your life...you are daring to be different! Good for you! Don't worry about what other say! Go on and change your life! -
OMG! Is that even legal?! What finally happened?

Hmmm...I actually got life insurance after my lap band. I think the weight loss, lowered blood pressure and reduced risk of diabetes made it easier to get life insurance.

Question: If you don't lose exactly the amount of weight the doctor wants...

I was in the same boat! My surgeon said to lose 10 lbs, but I lost 5. I called her and told her I was trying, she was ok with that. They need you to lose weight to try to shrink the size of you liver in order to avoid complications. They didn't even take my weight during my pre-op test or even the morning of my surgery. I wouldn't worry about it. You may want to call your doctor and let them know you are trying. -
Trying to decide whether to do this or not

Hi there: I wanted to send you a quick email to add my two cents to the discussion. I got banded on 6/22. It's only been a little over two weeks, but the band has changed my life. So far my weight loss has been steady, of course keep in mind, that I am only on liquids so far. I went into the surgery at 216, I am now 196.9! I haven't been under 200 in years and for the first time in a long time, I am optimistic about my battle against my weight. Here's the thing. If we were all super successful at all the other diet plans, we wouldn't need the lap band! If Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Diet Workshop, South Beach, and plain old diet and exercise with a dash of starvation worked for me, then I would not be here. All of us here need to lose large amounts of weight. Not the 5 to 10 lbs some people put on over the holidays. Not the 30 or 40 lbs some women put on after having a child. With that in mind. We need some extra help. And there is nothing wrong with asking for a little extra help! The band will only get us so far. But the extra help the band gives us is just what we need to keep going! Good luck! Sonia -
Hey everyone! It's done! I've got my lap bad! OOOOOOWWWWWW!!! So far I am doing ok. Taking my liquids although I sometimes feel hungry. But if I have a liquid with some Protein, I'm fine. Unflavored unjury rocks the house!!! I have pain in my side and I want to die when I cough...but I lay down for a little while and feel better soon. As far as surgery goes, so far so good. Let the games begin! Sonia

Hello all: Tomorrow is the big day I've been waiting for. I get my lap band! I'm nervous. I'm nervous because of any possible complications. I'm nervous about what I'm in for the first few weeks. I'm nervous about how my life will change. ARGH! I hate nerves. But at the same time, I'm excited. This is a brand new start! Wish me luck! Sonia
