July 2007 Bandsters

I don't even have to lose any weight before sugery. I'm starting at 232. I've been eaing out a lot lately, but not really overdoing it. I actually think my mind is in diet mode ecause nothing really sound good to me, and I've already stated cleaning out my pantry for the most part, and stocking with better options like Soups, Jello, etc. I told my DH I wanted Red Lobster the Saturday night before surgery. I know, seafood, one of the better choices for after surgery, but the biscuits are SOOOOO good. That will be my splurge. My appetite is not the same as it was. I've been looking at my 1/2 cup measuring cup a lot lately, and think that is the amount of food that will be filling to me after surgery, so now my mind is really working, and I've been cuting back on portions. When we eat out, I only get a sandwich instead of a whole meal. I too am doing this for health. My world changed a lot 3 years ago when my son was born. He is my life now, and I look at life so diferently, like now I really have something to live for, and be around for. I'm glad I'm doing this now, before he gets to much older. I don't want him to remember me like this. Of course he'll have a few pictures, but that's it. Lynette

Marci, WOW, only 9,500. That's a deal. I'm paying about 16,000 but the Dr. is local, only 10 minutes from my house, and he has a great program before surgery, and a great support group afterwards. I feel like the money is worth it, plus he's had a fellowship training in Boston, and has traveled out of the country to teach other Dr.'s to preform the surgery. All of his patients that I've met at meetings, or on Obesityhelp.com think the world of him, and had great results. I'm just excited as can be to finally lose the weight. Lynette

Welcome Mike, You're a brave one, going to Mexico. I chose close to home, but you are in CA so you're not too far. Do you have a pro op diet? My surgeon does not require one. Not sure if that's good or bad. Lynette

    anyone 200lbs before being banded

It all depends on your height too. Do you know what yur BMI is? Anything 35 and over with comorbid conditions should get you approved. Lynette

    Questions re STD post-op

I agree with Mandy, the Family act should protect your position if you have a larger compamy with 50 associates or more in a 25 mile radius (or something like that) It is against the law, and they have to save your position, or hold one of equal pay, equal status, etc. for you. Check into it, but you should be ok. A lot of people have gone back after 3 or 4 days with no problems, as long as it's not a physical job. Lynette

    depression

I don't think it would delay anything, but I was told I will have to stay on my Zoloft after surgery for a year or two, because some people get depressed after surgery (mourning the food) but I was still approved. I'm self pay, so I don't have to wait on insurance. Lynette
  8.
I'm not yet banded, but I've heard many people are able to quit using some or all of their meds after surgery.

Personally I'm on Zoloft, and I've been approved for surgery. They want me to stay on the Zoloft because often after surgery, some people do get depressed (mourning the food) so that shouldn't stop you from surgery either.

The best thing to do is go to an informational seminar, and take your hubby since he's behind you on this, and ask all the questions you need to. There isn't a family out there that is going to jump up and down for you the first time you mention weightloss surgery. But if you get all the facts and information that is out there for you, you can talk to them in depth about facts, and they will probably start to warm up to the idea.

Good Luck to you, and remember, in the end it's your body and your decision, and don't let anyone else decide this for you.

Lynette

Banded 2/19/07 Unbanded 3/2/07 try again?

Carrie, I'm so sorry to hear about your situation, and wouldn't know what to do in the situation myself, but I think I'd be uncomfortable with the same surgeon doing the surgery again. I would sit down with the surgeon and ask if he could recommend another surgeon to do the second surgery, and have the first surgeon pay for it. He probably realizes that he can get sued, even if it was an accident, and they do happen, but you need to feel comfortable with your decision, as does your family and husband. Your DH probably is not comfortable with the surgeon due to the fact that he could of lost you in the extreme events following surgery. I'm sure any DH would feel this way. You need his support in this, and if that means seeing another surgeon, then I'd start looking for someone else. You shouldn't feel pressured to make and decisions right now. I would wait to give you body time to heal, and think about it. The surgery will always be there for you, but you need to make sure you'll be there for the surgery. Lynette
  10. Hi Deb, I'm very sorry that this has happened, but at least your Dr. didn't try to preform surgery on you while being sick and let you know this ahead of time. Sometimes God has his way of helping us out of troubled situations at the time but we don't realize it until later. If your Dr. had tried to do the surgery and did something wrong, it could of been devestating for you. So think of it in this way, and I don't want it to sound badly, but at least if if you are a bit down now, at least you're here, alive and well, and just waiting on another "birthday". At least you won't have to wait a whole year like the other one!!! I too had my surgery postponed. I was scheduled for 6/27/07, but my Dr. is going to be out of town, so now I have to wait 5 more days. I know when 6/27 comes and goes I will be feeling down also, but I try to look at it this way. I now have 5 more days to educate myself on the band, and 5 more days to eat whatever I want, and 5 more days to appreciate the opportunity to have this surgey in the first place. This is what will make those 5 days fly by so fast that the surgery will be there before I know it. Keep your head up, and take a deep breath. You know all good things are worth the wait!!!!!!! Lynette
  11. My doc won't do the surgery unless you've been smoke free for 1 month prior. They say that it really aids in the healing process after surgery, and it's been thought that smoking "could" be related to erosion later on. I have 1 week and 3 days to quit. I'm so stressed out over things right now that it is just making it harder. But I have no fear, come Monday, June 4, I will be smoke free. I'm not going to let one habit (smoking)ruin the success I can have with another(weight loss surgery) I'm ready to let it go in my heart, but sometimes my mind isn't so ready. Good Luck, Lynette

    Portable Foods

Alysa, You may want to purchase a small portable cooler and ice packs to keep in your car. Some great Snacks are string cheese, gogurt (it's the yogurt in the tube like a popsicle) cups of applesauce. They also have the Campbells Soup at hand, which may not be too bad right out of the cup, but you could always stop at a gas station and ask to use the microwave. You could also purchase a thermos and put hot soup in it in the morning before you leave. It should stay warm by lunch. Lynette

Who Has Lost Over 100 Pounds?!?!

WOW!!!!!!!!!! What a great accomplishment you all have achieved.:clap2: I'm not even banded yet, and I have chills going up my spine as I scrolled down the list of the 100+ Club.:omg: I've been on here for 2 weeks now, but I had not been to this topic. I really needed this today. For some reason, I just realized today the the majority of banders lose about 70% of their excess weight.:faint: I'd love to lose 100. 70% would mean I'd only lose 70 lbs. So I've been searching to see if there were other banders out there, who have 100 lbs to lose to get thier ideal body weight. This has given me hope. I would be happy with 70, but really satisfied with 100.:biggrin1: Thank you for your insperation. Because of all of you, I know it is possible, and I'm going to do it too.:clap2: Lynette

    June 2007 Bandsters

Marlynn, Were you asking me about the list of companies I e-mailed? If so, I googled 'Protein powder' and went to 21 different web sites and asked about getting samples. Only 1 reply that they would send some. I haven't got them yet, so maybe they won't be sending them either. If this wasn't the list you were talking about, please disregard. Lynette:)

    June 2007 Bandsters

Welcome to all the new June Bandsters. Even though I got postponed until July 2, I hope you don't mind if I stay just to see how you all do. I'm excited for each and everyone of you. Hey Missy, What web sites were able to send you free samples of Protein powder? I've emailed 21 companies and only one said they'd send me some free samples. Have a great day everyone!!!

    Any June 2007 Bansters

Hi All, I'm Lynette and I'm being banded on June 27 in florence, KY by Dr. Sonnanstine. Still a ways off, but I'm enjoying the time on this site and all the information it has. It's great talking with people who have already had the surgery, and knowing what is out there on the other side. I hope to meet other June 07 bansters to share experiences with. Does anyone feel like you've been sentenced to death, and will be resurected the day of surgery???? I know, kind of weird, but I've been overweight for so long. I don't have a life to get back to, but I have a new life to begin. I don't know what it is to be thin, or not overweight. I really have no before weight gain pictures to stare at for motivation. But I'm in the right place now, and I'm headed in the right direction. I wish surgery was tomorrow, but good things come to those who wait, and I feel like I've waited all my life for this tool to work with. Can't wait to put it to use. Good luck to all those who visit that are being banded in May. We're so jealous and green with envy, but we'll be there too, soon, in the land of Lapband with you.:clap2: Lynette:)
  17. Hello, I'm haven't been banded yet, but I wanted to know from others how you handled the first month post op with the liquids and having a family to feed every night? I'm afraid my husband will get sick of picking up fast food every night, and I'm not sure I'll want to be cooking every night. I'm sure there is a compromise somewhere as he has been very supportive. Just wanted some ideas of what othes did in this first month. Thanks for listening. Lynette

Anyone Quit Smoking after Lap Band?

My Dr. told me he wouldn't operate on me unless I was clean a month before surgery. I'm trying hard to slow down. Only had 3 so far today, and it's 3:00pm, so I'm not doing bad. It will happen by May 27. Thats 1 month before surgery. Oh, and I did hear that smoking may be something that causes erosion :sick so that pretty much tells me that I can't continue after surgery either.:cry Good Luck, Lynette:)

    Meal ideas for mushies?

I haven't been banded yet, but I have a recipe for a chicken spread that is very good, and may work for mushy stage. 1 small can of chicken 1 block of cream cheese ( I use the fat free) 2 to 3 green onions, chopped fine 1 tbsp fat free mayo 1/2 tsp worchestire 1/2 tsp lemon juice garlic salt to taste Mix well by hand. I haven't really looked at the amount of Protein in it, but it's a very soft spread used for crackers or bread. I guess you could put it in the blender and maybe use a little more mayo to thin out. And it always tastes beter the day after you make it. The garlic salt has time to set in. Hope you like it, Lynette:)

    Married with children......

Thanks for the replies. He can cook, but has only done this once since we've been together for 7 years. We have a 3 year old and he has a 12 and 15 year old from a previous marriage. I'm just thinking I always buy packs of meat with say 2 steaks, or 3 chicken breasts, and there is always leftovers on chicken night. I just don't want to waste food. (the 12 and 15 year olds only come every other weekend) It just seemed like fast food would be easier and cheaper for them to eat, but I guess if I want them to eat healthy, I'll have to do the cooking. It's worth it in the end, and the temptations will always be there. So it probably is better to get it out of my system right off the bat. Thanks, Lynette:)

    Married with children......

Thanks Libra, I love Boston Market, but there aren't any around where I live. They've all closed down. I do hope I'm feeling up to cooking, but I'm not sure if it will be a bigger temptation for me. Lynette
  24. Hello, Just wondering how many of you there are out there. It seems like most problems like slippage and erosion occur within the first 2 years. What are your secrets to success? Lynette

Anyone 2 to 3 years post op???

You still have 4 years, but you're braver than me. I don't think I could do a tri. I don't swim too often, probably because of the weight. Maybe that will change. Good luck on your runs. Lynette:)
