Alynne, I'm definately checking out that book. See, thats the thing, my personal trainer will hand me a set of 8lb weights and tell me to do 5minutes of bicep curls. By minute 4 I'm to the point of failure and the next day I can't even scratch my nose I'm so sore, so I know its definately working! But again, there are so many different opinions about it that I just go crazy!

Oh, and duh, 1hr walk!

Stefanie, I was just checking out your book recommendation and I had a question for you. When you are working out upper body, how heavy of a weight are you lifting? I read a summary of the book on amazon and it seems as if they are promoting heavy weights, lower reps, versus my trainer whose saying lower weights, more reps. I only ask because I used to train with my bf back in the day and we did low reps/heavy weights, and I thought I looked pretty good. I signed on with this new trainer in september 07 up through now and I have noticed a difference, but not huge......I know everyone has a different theory on this, but I guess I'm just confused now! Everyone else, feel free to give input!

Thanks for another book recommendation!

I tried The Firm in the past and really liked it, but I wasn't sure it was worth investing the money in since I pay for a gym membership. It sure would be nice to have on those days that I didn't feel like going to the gym. Today might be one of those days for me, but the temps have warmed up here a bit so I may go for a long walk tonight with the doggy!

Ok, I'm on the no dairy kick because of the Skinny Bitch book, which I finished yesterday and was completely disgusted by. But it was a good book. Stef, I'll PM you my stats.

Actually, I just bought some soy milk and its delicious. I was soo excited because I thought it would taste like crap!

I like both Boca and Gardenburger. Welcome Loser28. Daddy, 100lbs is soo awesome. I'm hoping I can say 100lbs soon. The scale has steadily been moving for me, first time since October! Stefanie, 38 miles? You are crazy girl.....

Sorry, that's completely unrelated to my band! Ha!

Actually, I'm still not sure why men think that shoving clothes into a washer and adding soap is doing a load of laundry. I always have to throw the clothes into the dryer and fold and put away. WTF?

Oh yeah, and Jess, 155 minutes of cardio? CRAZY......But AWESOME!!!

You rock babygrl, it is sooo hard to go grocery shopping and not by meat, dairy, eggs, etc.....I know. I did it today. I'm not going vegetarian, but I think I'm cutting out dairy, for now... And Stefanie, gotcha, no more nasty dairy talk. It is quite disgusting!

The total gym will give you what you want, a mix of strength and cardio at the same time....that being said, you can get the same thing out of the treadmill. You could get a pair of light handweights and do curls etc while you're walking. I just bought some resistance bands and you could definatley do that and some cardio at the same time. Lunges, pushups, and pullups can all be done on the treadmill. If you get a chance watch an episode of the biggest loser, even if you can't stand that type of programming, you may notice that the trainers make the contestants do some pretty neat things with the treadmill that have nothing to do with walking and running. Also, in my opinion, once you start dropping the weight and get really good at walking, you can slowly introduce running, which is a complete total body workout that builds muscle and gives you a complete cardio workout. You could go both ways with this one, if it were me though, I'd invest in the treadmill.

Post-op exercise..when did you start taking different classes at the gym (or DVDs)?
jmarruda replied to citygirl4616's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Talk to your doc. Every one is different, but for me, my doc required walking after surgery, very light cardio (think elliptical/walking) after 2-3 weeks, depending on how I felt, and no strength training until after 6 weeks. I stuck to the elliptical for a while before braving my first spin class (almost 2 months). I'm sure you'll get more opinions but I would definatly check with your doc first. -
Ok, just got back from the gym... 50 min elliptical 40 min abs Couldn't possibly do one more thing....felt like I was going to black out! Guess I can't take a week and half off from the gym anymore!

Oh yeah, Daddy, nice list! Most of those songs are on my shuffle!

skinny bitch kitch...awesome! Also read over half of the skinny bitch book and my cereal with milk this morning actually grossed me out. I kept thinking about the part in the book about milking the cows...ewwwwwww! Sore muscles? Try bananas or sweet potatoes, or anything else real high in potassium, and like Stefanie said, lots and lots of water..... Off to the gym, haven't been there since christmas eve so I think I'm going to go easy with lots of cardio and a little ab work....

Nice, not nearly as lame as mine. I wish I had pictures of myself.... Babygrl, got Skinny Bitch and the cookbook....reading vigorously....LOVE it!!!!!!!!! Gotta go, on to chapter 3.....
