    splenic infarction

I realize I am months late on this conversation, but I did suffer a splenal infarct as a result of my VSG. I didn't know until about a week after my surgery when I went to the ER in horrible pain. They did a CT scan and told me about my spleen. All of the doctors I spoke to about it were very nonchalant about it, and made it sound like it was a very common problem (not just for bariatric patients). The fact that it was causing me a lot of pain seemed to confuse them. Frustrating. I am sure this complication, along with many others, caused my recovery to take much longer than others without it.
  2. Hi. I can completely relate to your story. I had my sleeve done on November 21, 2011 and I have experienced one complication after another. During the surgery they knicked my spleen which caused a splenal infarct (that part of my spleen died). Then my pancreas and liver enzymes became elevated (and still are), so I was hospitalized in early December for pancreatitis. During that stay they found that my gallbladder was full of sludge and I had an emergency gallbladder removal. When I returned home from that, I just couldn't keep anything down, so the first week of January I was hospitalized for 7 days and they had me on TPN (basically a bag of nutrients that runs through your veins). When I returned home from that hospital stay, I developed chronic diarrhea everytime I ate. My doctor ran some tests (I am still having blood tests once a week), and told me that I had developed C-Diff Colitis and started me on an antibiotic called Flagyl that gives me a permanent metallic taste in my mouth. To top it off, 2 nights ago I ended up in the emergency room with 3 kidney stones and a raging kidney infection caused by the dehydration from the colitis. I had to switch a few of my vitamins over to injections, because I just can't swallow the pills without an awful gag reflex or vomiting. Most days I experience intense pain right under my breastbone, and my doctore tells me it's pain from my liver and pancreas. I am going to see the GI doctor on February 13, 2012 for an ERCP w/sphincterotomy. Again, they tell me that this will help the pain...but I heard that same thing when I had my gallbladder out and I only felt worse after that. While my weight loss is good (highest weight=258, weight on day of surgery=226, and current weight=195), I, at this time, regret having had this surgery. I am only 33 years old but I feel like an 80+ year old. This has all led to depression and awful anxiety. My doctors put me on disability, because I am either too tired, too sick, or in the hospital. Any suggestions for vitamins, herbal supplements, or something else that might help with all of my issues?
